Walt Havenstein

So I'm a little surprised this topic hasn't come up yet. Walt lives on the lake and is running for Governor.

Thoughts on if this is a good thing, I know when Romney was running for President it was a big deal.

Please, it would be nice, if one area of my life, would be free of politics!

Simple...don't open the thread. Why do you keep doing this to yourself?

tis 09-10-2014 06:30 AM

I didn't know that. Where does he live?

I am sure if he does happen to get elected , there will be MP presence when he is in residence. When Artie S got married we saw three MPs so there must have been somebody important there.

dave603 09-10-2014 08:31 AM

Speaking of MPs

Tonight's NH chronicle is on them.

MAXUM 09-10-2014 10:16 AM

I don't understand what the big deal is mentioning that one of the candidates for Gov happens to live on the lake? Good grief it's a legit discussion point, not like anyone is endorsing Mr Havenstein. I don't see any political angle to this at all IMHO.

For the record historically the lakes region has been a draw for both political and famous figures and life seems to go on without to much interruption. I see no reason to think otherwise if we happen to have a Gov that has a place on the lake. I do think that had Romney become president that would have been a slightly different story and probably why that was a much more entertaining discussion.

Havenstein

I happen to meet him at an event last week and he told me that he lived in Alton. I didn't know that, but didn't ask where because I didn't have time and he was busy as well.

Seaplane Pilot 09-10-2014 11:28 AM

I'm glad that Walt won the primary. Now I hope he wins the general election by beating Hassan. Having a governor with a level head, that lives on/near the lake will certainly be a refreshing change from what we've had.

playinghooky 09-10-2014 12:11 PM

Walt lives in Cedar Cove

I believe he lives in Cedar Cove which is the cove on the left as you enter Roberts Cove.

I'll bet you never even heard of him before the primary election. Now you want him as Governor. That's the trouble with this country, people vote for the party instead of who is the best qualified.

Most people would vote for a monkey instead of the opposite party...what a shame!

It will be interesting to see how many votes the MA Senator will get in NH.

You mean the MA Senator, who was born in Maine, raised in Rye, and lived in MA?

I was born in MA, of parents from CT and VT, who lived most of their lives in NH (my mom always talked about her VT Yankee Democrat upbringing, which was a different democrat definition than exists now). I lived in MA, raised my family there, am now a resident of NH, where I always wanted to be. Am I an "outsider" too? What does it take?

Fair enough; he couldn't make it Ma (lived there) so now he's running in NH (raised there). If he fails in NH then he can run in Maine (born there).
Is this what we want from our elected officials?

I don't care where anyone is from, but when you are a Senator for one state, and the voters fire you, moving to another state to find voters seems so cheesy...

If he was a Democrat I doubt you would be focused on geography. Attacking a center right moderate (the country needs more moderate statesmen) for such a trivial matter seems petty. Your comments seem to run counter to you previous post about voting along party lines.

Mass threw him out and its our chance to embrace him. New York elected Hillary Clinton. Not exactly the same situation but Hillary doesn't exactly have strong ties to NY. Scott Brown is just what we need. One man's opinion....

dave603 09-10-2014 08:01 PM

I sort of want someone who represents the constituents not the party they belong to,
I'll give him that, he crossed party lines to vote for what the people who elected him wanted. ( as foreign as that seems to some people )

To me, it's exactly the same as Hillary moving the NY to get elected to the Senate, except she did not serve elsewhere before. She just went where she knew people would vote for her based on party affiliation and having a well-known name, even though she lacked integrity.

SIKSUKR 09-11-2014 08:05 AM

Doesn't seem anything like the same thing. Your above statement is true about Clinton but Brown was raised in NH.

Having worked indirectly for Walt a number of years back I can attest to his work ethics and leadership ability. I think having him around would be a welcome change.

The fact he lives on the lake in Alton sounds even better as it may promote a more open discussion on lake topics.

Wrong again, Rusty! I have worked with BAe Systems all over the world, and had personal dealings with Walt when he ran BAe in Nashua. I support him because of his values, ethics and business knowledge, not because of his political party. With that said, it's not a very hard decision, because the political party of Hassan has done SO much good for this state and this country! (tongue firmly inserted into cheek). :rolleye1:

I have worked with Walt from the day he started as VP of Engineering up until he became CEO. His openness, work integrity and leadership will be one heck of a refreshing change in Concord.

I believe he resides on Chestnut Cove in Alton. I may be wrong.

It's nice to know people who know him personally and can vouch for his ethics/knowledge/beliefs. I am very glad for this information.

MAXUM 09-11-2014 11:36 AM

I have several family members that work for BAE Systems and they all have similar things to say about Walt. He was very well respected during his tenure there. That is not an endorsement, just a fact.

Far as Scott Brown goes since it seems this has discussion has gotten some what political.... if I were him I would wear as a badge of honor being kicked out of office representing MA. MA is a cesspool of political corruption.

Furthermore... as not only a resident of NH but also a native, I don't care if whoever is running for office is from Mars, what I care about is that they have the integrity to hold the office and will do what is right by the people and for the people. Not a puppet for a particular political agenda. These frivolous things used to smear a candidate no matter what their political leanings are is so childish. I want a real discussion about what is going on and what ideas all candidates bring to the table instead of sound bites of gaffs or tabloid worthy stupidity that has NOTHING to do with how these folks will govern. Sadly in today's world all anyone cares about is nonsensical crap peddled on social media which is how we end up with a government stacked with political hacks and idiots have have no idea what they are doing. We are living in very dangerous times, we so desperately need people with leadership, conviction, integrity, and bold ideas based on real world experience to deal with the problems we as a nation are facing.

IF he's a NH guy, why was he a MA Senator? Had to be an outsider in one state or the other. You can't be a resident of both at the same time.

He strikes me as a guy that can easily get lots of campaign funding and simply buy an election. He also has a voting record that indicates his vote can be purchased by Pharmaceutical companies (and maybe others as well).

He also voted against federal income tax cuts that would help the vast majority of NH residents(to be fair, the tax cuts were bundled with tax increases that would hurt the very wealthy).

He has done lots of positive things too, especially in the areas of treating Autism and initiatives to improve nutrition. He's not the worst guy we could elect, I just like to think there had to have been someone that's lived here for the last 40 years that could do a good job too.

It appears I didn't have it just right. He was born in Kittery, but just barely as his birthplace is the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. At a young age(none given that I could find) he was moved to Wakefield Mass were he grew up. He has owned a house in Rye for 20 years and claimed his residency last year in Nh. I'd hardly describe him as the carpetbagger that Hillary was.

OK, My first foray into a polarizing thread on this board.

I voted for Scott twice and while not thrilled with everything he did while in the senate; we do need people willing to cross the aisle. My feeling is he won the first time because the election was held on January 19th in the middle of winter and the Massachusetts Democratic machine did not put on snow tires. The “Machine” was rolling for the second election.

There are many of us in New England that have moved back and forth across state lines for one reason or another; you should consider that all of NE is the size of many states (and they only get 2 Senators and we get 12). I feel Scott would be good for NH and the region and I wish him well with my “unrepresented Tax dollars”. ;) (and yes I knew this going in to the new house, but I hope to be a NH resident again in the not to distant future)

Major 09-11-2014 01:49 PM

Scott Brown

If you like the direction the President is taking us, vote for Shaheen, who has voted with him 98% of the time. Those of us who believe we are traveling in the wrong direction, we will be voting for the person formerly from Massachusetts, not from Missouri.

Which leads me to the carpetbagger issue. Can you blame someone who lost to a fake indian to want to find another place where he can have a fair shot at winning? Massachusetts is full of lemmings who ignore issues like character when electing their representatives. (Although I do have to admit that Mass got it right in getting that crook Tierney out of office!)

Scott Brown is a man of integrity, who will serve his constituents to the best of his ability.

Without addressing the politics of either candidates. I think a Governor living on the lake is a net positive.

The fear with a President was the security people overwhelming the lake. A Governor of a tiny state is not really an international target and the security presence should be minimal. Basically the NH state police can take care of the Governor. Only his neighbors would notice the difference.

Having someone who really knows the lake in Concord can only help. They really seem clueless at times, and don't seem to understand the complex historical tradeoffs between all the competing uses.

Exactly. Maybe we wouldn't have the ridiculous 45 MPH daytime speed limit. Anyone who has spent time on the lake knows that speed isn't the issue. The issues are knuckleheads violating the 150 foot rule and drinking too much.

Rumor has it that one time during a trip from Maryland to NH Walt had to ask directions to his Lake front home. He got lost in the little town of Alton.
Now that's someone we need as Governor of NH.

New Hampshire has one of the highest business tax rates in the country. Who cares if the "rumor" is true. I'd rather have someone that understands business, knows how to grow jobs, and attract new business to our state. I'm all for someone who has had to draft checks for his employees rather than someone who cashed checks her whole life. It can be done with the right leadership. Look at Texas, who actively recruited businesses located in California to move there. New York has even recognized the importance of lowering the business tax rate, providing huge incentives for business who move there. Walt is the man for the job.

Walt will create a lot of government jobs as he has in the past. Every penny that he has ever earned came from the government. Some of the money wasn't even earned...so they say anyway.

....and bet you that you will be surprised to learn that then newly elected State Senator Jeannie Forester (R-Meredith) in April 2008 was the only Republican to vote yes to the 45/30 speed limit and cast the deciding vote for a 13-11 vote in the State Senate. She mentioned that as a young girl someone she knew was injured in a motorboat speed accident hitting a dock or something and that she felt a speed limit was needed. So, keep that one in your mind when you go vote for Jeannie-State Senator on November 4th.

New information on the Lake Speed Limit

I never understood the need for the lake speed limit but now it is clear. If I understand her rational if I hit my dock at 45 MPH during the day time I will not be injured but at night I can only hit my dock at 30 MPH and not be injured.

Back on topic if I may:

A week before the primary elections 78% of the NH voters had never heard of Walt Havenstein.

I think they will get to know him better before the election for Governor takes place. I'm looking forward to getting to know how he will create jobs in NH and also possibly lowering the corporate taxes. Doing all this without somehow raising more taxes to balance the budget.
He has always depended on Government contracts to run the businesses that he was CEO of. NH might be a challenge for him when he needs to broaden his avenues for revenue other then government money.

The government contracts are defense contracts. The objects that the government buys under the contracts are used for defense of YOUR freedom. The same freedom to which you refer in your signature.

Nice to hear that Walt did good at BAE Systems.

Then Havenstein went to a SAIC that was doing good and their stocks were going up very fast. After a while things turned a little sour and Walt retired from SAIC for personal reasons. He recently told the Keene Sentinel editorial board that he left his million dollar a year job because the commute from New Hampshire to Washington, DC had become too difficult.
For years Walt traveled all over the world in corporate jets but the yearly trip to NH was too much. OK I can see his point; he loved NH so much that right when he was making millions of dollars along with the enormous benefits, the yearly trip to NH did him in. Makes sense to me.

That's what happens when people vote for the party and not for the best candidate. We end up with clueless politicians telling us what's best for us. Time to flush the toilet and send them all to the sewer plant where they belong.

You're right Barbara, it was wishful thinking on her behalf.

In the end the budget did get balanced and we can thank both sides of the aisle for that.

If Walt becomes Governor he will at least have a balanced budget to start off with.

Is there a sewer plant big enough to handle that many though? :emb:

The other day Havenstein said he didn't know NH was so pretty in the fall season.

I'm sure he is learning a lot about NH since he has been running for Gov.

In the past he probably just flew into NH and took a limo to his place in Alton. The shades were probably pulled in the Limo so he could get some sleep.

I hope he likes NH and gets to see more of it in the future.

Ah yes, there's always time for a bit of last minute mud-slinging.

Poor Walt...he won't even get a chance to see where Concord is located.

Scott is already campaigning in Maine. He said Lobster is his favorite poultry dish. He said that he loves BBQ Lobster legs.

Well with who is still in office, and in the White House, I feel sorry for your grand kids, that's even if you have a kids in your past. You probably didn't because you are just old and obsolete. However if you do, they will have to pay this bill and I hope they don't go on welfare before they do. I want to make sure they know GRAMPA, was the one who put them in the situation. :rolleye1:

....rebuilding the Old Man ..... earns votes?

Walt Haverstein could have done himself a huge favor by proposing to rebuild the Old Man on the Mountain with a life-sized facsimile Old Man made out of fiberglass, or aluminum or some high tech material like what he uses in his companies bullet-proof vests. Include a visual light show and sound effects as you drive Franconia Notch and it would be a very happening Old Man....make the eyes light up and animate the face and mouth....to say "....hellooooooo down there.....live free or die! .....the State of NH is now very friendly for business!" ......and transmit to the cars below on their car radios.

I would have voted for Walt if he had been talking up the Old Man on the Mountain replacement big-time, and that would have been one less vote for Maggie Hassan and one more vote for Walt.....go Walt go....he did real good....came real close percentage wise just below Maggie by a couple points....hey.....he came in a very strong second place! ........ all things considered....and rebuilding the Old Man could have put him over the top.

Instead of just saying "NO" to absolutely everything....like all Republicans...he could have created a new Old Man on the Mountain and really put New Hampshire on the national tourist map..... say-hey.....did you see that up on yonder mountain! About the only thing the NH Republicans are real good for.....is creating lots of potholes in the state roads....and Walt mentioned that himself: Route 4 from Chichester to Alton, where he lives, is pothole town!

And now that the election is over we still hear caw, caw, caw from those who are still up in the trees. Unbelievable!:rolleye2:

Walt and Scott have never heard of the "Old Man on the Mountain. Therefore it didn't even enter their mind.
We aren't talking about two people who really had any interest in NH until they ran for office.
We don't have to worry about them anymore anyway.
