Winter mini Forum Fest

I'm planning on coming up from NJ for that weekend. If a specific time is designated for meeting at Riverat's bob house maybe we can have a gathering of Forum members. Several years back we tried to plan meeting for lunch at Shibley's, but the weather didn't cooperate. Is there a breakfast planned that day at the Masonic Hall? We'll have to check with Uppie.

Funny you mention it!!!!!

The Alton Mason's Breakfast Buffet is always on the third Sunday of the month, and Feb. 16th is indeed the 3rd Sunday. (When in doubt, check the calendar on this site. I have our breakfasts listed there.).

We serve from 7-11, all you can eat, and cost is only $10, including coffee and juice.

Hope to see you folks there.:D

Sounds like a great idea!
I am located right next to the gazebo/airport and within walking distance to shibley's, bathrooms and store. will have plenty of hot beverage, coffee, tea or cocoa, and a big pot of something cooking.
kick this around and see what everyone thinks.

Rotary hosting kids’ fishing derby on Feb. 16
ALTON — The Alton Centennial Rotary Club invites kids up to age 15 from throughout New Hampshire and neighboring New England states to Alton Bay for the sixth annual free kids’ fishing derby on Sunday, Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration takes place in Alton Bay at the parking lot bandstand. Participants need adult supervision and may be assisted by anyone with a fishing license. Fishing derby bibs will be given to the first 50 participants; trophies will be awarded for the largest fish caught in three different age categories, (0 to 7, 8-12 and 13-15). This event is one of many family oriented events offered during the Alton Winter Carnival that is organized by the Alton Business Association. Fewer children registered last year due to blizzard conditions but several trophies were awarded. Fish species caught included pickerel, rainbow trout, yellow perch and cusk. Participants must cut their line and release any black bass or salmon.
Ice safety is encouraged throughout this event. Keep away from any open water around docks with bubblers and old ice fishing holes that may still be unfrozen. The ice fishing area is limited to the area from Sandy Point south to the Alton town beach. Any plowed areas are set aside for aircraft or for the snow machine radar-run. Volunteers with ice-augers are always needed to assist the kids with drilling ice holes. Student volunteers from Prospect Mountain High School, earning community service hours, will be on hand to assist the Rotary Club with the registration. A limited amount of tip ups and shiners for bait will be available. Brian Mitchell at Amylyn’s Corner Market and Brian’s Bobber Shop in Alton Bay will donate bait and prizes for the kids’ fishing derby. Denise Terravecchia at the Ice Out Antique and Consignment Store has offered a place to warm up. Visit all of the unique Alton Bay stores during the Winter Carnival celebration. Please call Jim Fontaine at 875-0110 or David Countway at 875-3128 or 520-5211 if you would like to assist the Alton Rotary Club with this fun event.

We will be at the winter carnival. Entering the chowder competition. My wife is also decorating our bob house. Madigras theme so swing in for a "real" drink. We are also competing in the bed race. Looks like I'll be to busy to fish! Should be fun though...come by and say hi.

Pops

Great Pops, where are you located on the bay? I will not be decorating mine this year due to my back, I just hoping it holds out long enough for me to get there and enjoy the day.

River Rat
I am just up past you. About 30 yds. Past the bandstand. Popup camper conversion w/ wood sides. Sign on shack says "surrounded by iceholes". How is the fishing been for you? We have been slow. Hoping things pick up after all this activity on the ice stops.

Yea same here pops, real slow but still enjoyable.
Just got back from a visit to the bay, drove on and off with my little rear wheel drive ranger.
Paul and crew are hard at work on the runway, it looks to be tough plowing but they're gaining on it. Roger Sample is doing a great job on plowing the winter carnival areas also, and looks to be a plowed road up to sandy point.

Crossing my finger Saturday night's storm is out quick enough to clean up for the events. It should be..but, it's New England, so...

Looks like a great day for the carnival. Hopefully they got the same miniscule dusting of snow we got here on the south end of the lake.

Helicopter

Anyone know if the helicopter rides will be running today with all this wind?

AmantiDelLago 02-16-2014 01:55 PM

It is!

Went down to the winter carnival and the helicopter landed for the first time as soon as we got there. Took one of the first rides on it and the pilot did an excellent job with all the wind. Great time all around! Rides until 3 pm.
Asked and answered.

PaugusBayFireFighter 02-16-2014 02:18 PM

The wind made it a bit cold but it looked like everyone was enjoying the fun. Quite a few planes landed while I was there.

riverat 02-16-2014 04:16 PM

It was great to meet some forum friends today at the winter carnival, all in all a greatday. Got to the bobhouses at 7AM and the wind was a whipping, and with temps in the mid teens it stung the cheeks pretty good but I have to applaud the Alton Business association and all the sponsors for a fantastic day. I watched them struggle with setting up tents in the relentless wind and cold temps. Luckily (for medicinal purposes only) I had a bottle of dr. mcgillicuddy root beer licquer, it came in handy. Good time enjoyed by all.

I am under the helicopter's flight path and I can tell you that : 1. his clock is broken; or 2. He can't tell time; or 3. He's making too much money to quite at 3.

And the answer is.... :D:laugh:

glad you had a good time ADL...

And for the record, we don't mind the noise...and are proud to have part of the D Trail run behind our house...not problem with the noise there...except I'm jealous I don't have a machine to join them. :D:(:)

The Great Alton Bed Race

The winning bed prior to the great race, it was not even close.

Bed race

That's awesome. Wish we could of stayed around to see it.

Merrymeeting 02-16-2014 07:47 PM

We had a prior commitment in Portsmouth today so couldn't attend, much to our dismay. But, driving back on Rt. 11 in Rochester at about 5PM, I see a truck coming at us in the opposite lane, a strange contraption sticking over the cab,

As if flies by, I see it is a logo of a clam, with "Pops Clam Shack" emblazoned on it. At the same time, I hear my wife exclaim, "that was a bed!".

I'm sure someone will post pictures. :)

Drove up from NJ today and just caught the tail end of the Winter Carnival. The helicopter was still taking off after 3:30. Amazing, that wind was wicked. At 4 pm I was visiting friends on Rand Hill Road and the helicopter was heard overhead. On my way out I saw several snow mobiles heading towards Uppies on the D trail where it crosses Rand Hill Rd just before 5 p.m. The one thing that surprised me was that we have more snow in NJ right now than in Alton. My backyard is more than waist deep and even worse where it drifted. 56" of snow have fallen since mid-January and it's been too cold to melt much of it.

upthesaukee 02-16-2014 09:39 PM

Welcome back up, GH...

Yup, almost 430 before the copter stopped flying.

A lot of traffic on the trail this afternoon, mostly of groups of 4 or 5.. Nice to see.

Hope you have a nice stay... BTW, you may want to call the Art Place...may still have some Peter Ferber stuff left over from the Show this weekend.

See you sometime...

riverat 02-17-2014 08:19 AM

I was just curious, does anyone know why the helicopter made a couple landings at the clearing on the hill at the ABCCC. It would lift off and land there and than after couple minutes comeback to land on the bay.

RailroadJoe 02-17-2014 09:50 AM

Maybe for gas fill-up?

RLW 02-17-2014 10:26 AM

I heard someone say that they were going up there to refuel from a truck instead of going to Laconia, but that answer is third hand.:)

KDL 02-17-2014 05:59 PM

Seems there may have been a few professional photographer on the ice Sunday. Any idea where one could view their images?
Overall a great day on the ice.

I know that the Baysider had a reporter there with a camera and he took a helicopter ride. It should have some pictures.

Here is an excellent photographer here in Alton and he attends all special outings in the town and I'm sure he was there taking all the activities and you will find a great selection.:)Attachment 8977

Slickcraft 02-19-2014 05:57 PM

Matt did take a copter ride, showed me some of the photos. He takes lots of photos and usually manages to get a good one of the bed race finish.
