Found this on a tip from an island resident. Very cool tapered stern-not something I see often-not squared off, not rounded like a fantail steamer.

Interesting engine on board-might be a McDuff I'm not sure. If it is a McDuff it's the 3rd one I've found.

Story goes that it caught fire and was pushed away for safety reasons from the dock. Possibly named "Babs". Vessel was replaced about 1931-32.

Does show minor signs of fire damage but otherwise intact.

1912 Camp Idlewild Launch

After watching the video I am quite certain that this is the boat.
I was able to find this picture in the 1912 camp brochure.

I am still trying to get more info and I am not quite sure if this is "BABS"
from the story I had heard but I was excited to have found a picture that matches the wreck.
Note the cow or bull silhouette or someone in costume on the stern. Looks like it might have been a parade of some sort as everyone is wearing similar hats.

I went to Camp Idlewild in the mid-60s and remember diving on a on wreck around the mouth of the cove that is on the Camp Idlewild side of the isthmus... I recall that the story was of one of the first launches for the Camp that had caught fire and been pushed out to sink... but that was a long time ago and my memory is pretty hazy... a few years ago Misty Blue and I tried to find it again to no avail...

If SkprBob is online, he would know for sure as I believe he was my SCUBA instructor at Idlewild at the time!!

What incredible weather we've been having, Happy Labor Day weekend everyone!! -PIG

idlewild boats

I think strongly that the boat Hans found is one of the double-ended Idlewild boats. Unfortunately, that pre-dates me a lot. I'll have to do some research.

The "Babs" was another Idlewild boat. That's the one that caught fire and was pushed out into the back cove. It lay in about 15' of water and was a real snorkeling attraction when camp was in session. Its remains were eventually raised and the prop, shafting, and engine were taken elsewhere. That was done after the camp closed. I'll also have to do some more research there also.

Idlewild Launch

This is a really cool video and if you go to around 24:00, the film, shot from the Mt Washington, goes past Sandy Island "Men's Camp" and docks at Camp Idlewild. There is a nice sequence of water front activities at the camp and shows the launch under way and at the dock sporting a full canopy. There is another camp boat in the video that may be "Babs"

The boat is in fact "Babs" and was retrieved by Jeff Fay. He got the engine running again after 88 years on the bottom and work has been started on the boat!
