Route 28 Alton-Ossipee

I am seeking information about when and how NH 28 acquired its current alignment. I remember as a boy driving up along Alton Bay and past Roberts Cove on then-Route 28, buy the time I was driving (1966) the present alignment was in place.

Driving from North Wolfeboro to Ossipee, there is a parallel road called "Old Route 28" which appears and disappears in discontinuous segments.

Is there a history of this road anywhere?

Here is a link to old topo maps from 1928 and 1958 for comparison purposes. Look at the northwest corner.....and in the older map the northeast corner. The area near the old courthouse does seem changed. Looks like old Rt. 28 went through Courthouse Square and the new one bypasses it at Rt. 171 and then reconnects to 28.

Did you know that Rt. 28 starts in Orleans on Cape Cod and goes all the way to Ossipee?

Look what else I found in my "research"....it came up on google! https://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums...ead.php?t=8268

The "new" Alton road was just about finished in 1966 just when you started driving. You began driving just in time to save travel time, but obviously the road is not as scenic. They opened sections of it at a time before that.

Another great site is https://www.historicaerials.com/viewer I use the site a lot, especially the flashlight option. I don't know how far back the area in question goes but there can be many different years to look at for one location, going as far back as 1938.
