Why No Cars at Bike Week
 

Think it's very unfair to close Lakeside Ave to vehicles. We've enjoyed the sights and sounds of bike week all the way back to the days it was called "The Gypsy Tour".....guess that dates me.
Anyway, there are lots of owners of street rods, muscle cars and sports cars that would also like to enjoy the festivities and we're the ones paying taxes all year round....why can't we use our own roads?

I live here, pay taxes here and think you are way off base asking for Lakeside to be open to cars during a week that brings major revenue to the entire state of NH.

Its not called muscle car, hotrod, sports car week for a reason. Please park at one of the auto lots and walk there is lits to see & its good for ya! [emoji6]

Hmmm...didn’t they just used to close it from Thursday til Sunday?
Back when I rode a bike I wondered why they left Lakeside open to all vehicles...didn’t seem fair to the bikers. I guess they smartened up ( now that I don’t have a bike)
I think it’s a good idea...keep the riff raff 4 wheelers outa there! :D

Without cars Lakeside can get very tightly packed with bikes parked & moving and people on the street. Near gridlock at times. So add yahoo onlookers in cars to the mix? Dangerous and complete gridlock. Hopefully this was not a serious suggestion.

After watching that video all I can say is that tents have changed a lot since 1972. :D

You're probably right....just sayin' there's lots of us old guys that like the sights and sounds of bike week but many no longer ride and wouldn't mind crusing even in the heavy traffic. I remember from the old days that bikers appreciate hot cars....need something to look at now that flashing is not allowed

This 1972 news clip shows all the riders wearing helmets ..... looking for helmets, it's plain to see that every 1972 motorcycle driver who is driving is wearing a helmet .... which is very different from 2019 ...... was it in 1978 under Gov Mel "ax the tax" Thompson when the helmet law disappeared?

Seems that Mel took an ax to the helmet law, too?

Is this correct ..... anyone know what's what with the history on the NH helmet non-law ..... when did the NH-wearing a helmet law expire? My guess is something like 1980?

Even the rider in a side car attached to a motorcycle is wearing a helmet, so's there had to be a helmet required law back in 1972?

1975 Universal helmet laws in 47 states and the District of Columbia. All but three states had universal helmet laws (IL, IA, CA).

1976 Congress removed the financial penalties on federal funds that were contingent upon states’ enactment of helmet laws. $17.5 Billion in federal highway funds to the states was no longer linked to states’ compliance with helmet laws. This catalyzed a widespread repeal of helmet laws.

In 1977, New Hampshire reduced its helmet law to a partial law for riders under 18 years until the federal government no longer required a helmet law as a condition for federal funding.

Upon repeal of the federal penalty in 1995, NH became a state with no helmet law.

I ran over a dog on my bike in 1975 and I was wearing a helmet...good thing too as while I was somersaulting down the road I whacked my noggin on the double yellow lines. My cheapo k-mart helmet split in half but my head was saved!

Just off the top of my head .... here's a NH helmet factoid that's a bit of a head scratch-er?

Going downhill skiing without a helmet is considered unsafe by most NH-skiers and ski area mgmts?

Going motorcycling without a helmet is considered not unusual and seems to be very common?

..... go figure; what's the thinking with these two opposing NH-helmet factoids?

With motorcycling, that thinking is called "wishful," and perhaps a "no-brainer." When a skier falls, he's more apt to slide to a stop over something slippery. When a cyclist falls, he's going to windmill for sure, whacking limbs and cranium on something hard, non-slippery, and unyielding with every turn. Anyway, skiers don't mind the helmet, perhaps because that inch of foam keeps the head very warm, a big plus for wearing it. It also may keep the goggles in place better than a knit hat.

Helmets are just like swim noodles.
They are for wimps and nerds, but ok for children.

Looks like 2-liter plastic soda bottles .... aka empty Coca Cola containers..... inventively fashioned into a home made flotation device.

Here in New Hampshire with 31 different Walmart stores in this very small state, you can purchase a brand new Coast Guard approved pfd in red or blue for the very low price of $9.94 ..... so, something tells me this photo is not in New Hampshire .... could be it's in Burlington, Vermont as Vermont has just three Walmart stores!:laugh:

Hmmm you pay taxes "year round?" so do us "weekenders" that don't live there year round. Oh and we also support the businesses like RESTAURANTS! Ha... :D:D
