Wild waves on 10/16/2012
Maybe it's just because I'm new to this, but I was fearful for my boat yesterday... This was on the "broads" side of Big Barndoor

East of Barndoor
If you are East of Barndoor over where the Bahre estate, you can just about see Center Harbor. A wind from the North can create a heck of a wave in the 30 miles distance. Perhaps, this is the roughest section of the lake.

Not sure why the picture isn't showing up... I linked to one I placed in the gallery.
http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopo...hp?photo=18798 On a map, I can just about draw a straight line from by dock, through the channel between Parker Island / Umbrella Point most of the way to Center Harbor. Funny thing is the wind was more from the West than NW yesterday. Sort of coming from rattlesnake/sleeper. I didn't see a single boat on the water all day. I wish I knew a way to tell the really windy days from the "normal" windy days, so I could move my boat someplace more protected. By the time it was clear that the waves would be big yesterday, it was too late for me to try and move. |
Weather forecasts
I typically read wind forecasts from several sites... a few days in advance. These often change, but mostly help with those travel decisions to the broads side of Rattlesnake. Also... Watch the weather and wind at www.rattlesnakecam.com and www.rattlesnakecam.com/watch.htm.

I've had good luck with wind forecasts at
http://www.windalert.com/spot/53049 But in this case it just predicted yet another day of water dribbling over my breakwater, where I'm sure I wouldn't go out, but I didn't fear for my boat. Yesterday I guess there was a little extra special sauce involved. Fortunately I do have a dock on the quiet side of BBD too, so if I get out here and find the broads rough, I can chicken out and head there. Now that I have a reasonable internet connection (yes Virginia, there is DSL on BBD), there is another webcam in our future. |
Spectacular!

I hiked to the north end if the Rattlesnake Island to to get some pictures. The lake was magnificent and exhilarating!
Attachment 6824 Attachment 6825 Attachment 6826 Attachment 6827 Attachment 6828 Attachment 6829 Attachment 6830 We had to head out later in the afternoon for some appointments. It was considerably less windy. I was happy to be going with the waves. Attachment 6831 This day wasn't the waviest that we've seen, but it was pretty great. I had trouble holding the camera and myself steady in some of the intense gusts. I am so glad that I took a hike. ;) I do have video, but having trouble with i4 Software Video Camera. Once finished and saved, some of the clips go black, but you can still hear it. In the preview mode, before saving, it's all there. Does anyone have experience or ideas that I could try? Thanks! |

Let me properly welcome you to the Forum and to the Winni Community ....... Winni will be a LOT different than what you are use to as far as conditions-- this is a Lake to take seriously when boating. Best of luck in your new home on Barndoor !! By seeing the picture you posted, you gave away who you are :) (I am the friend of your sister's that dropped by to say hello a few weeks back) . . . . |
I've already chickened out once on trying to dock in a way milder wind than that picture (while my neighbors continue to cruise on in).

Great shots!
You really captured "Winni" in a foul mood..
|
I find I really like the foul moods (as long as my boat is safe and I don't need to go anywhere). I'm delighted to have occasional "ocean front" property, with water you can drink and is warm enough to swim in.
