Shangri-La
I held many different jobs at the Shangri-La (later Brickyard Mountain Inn), from dishwasher, salad boy, bus boy, maintenance, rope tow operator; to name some, but not all. I worked there while in high school and college from 1967 through 1971.
George and Mary Spanos were the owners. In addition, I remember Bob White, who ran the front desk and Manny, the bartender. I worked maintenance with George and Leroy Stilling (?); who were brothers. There was an exceptional Greek pastry chef named Dennis who made the most incredible French pastry from scratch. There was a chef who worked at night named Earl. I'd love to hear more about the people I worked with, as well as any stories. |

Why did they ever tear it down? It looks much nicer than the Brickyard Inn.

Is this where Meredith Bay or Grand View Motel is located now?

above grand view, behind all those trees.
the way I remember it, which might be fuzzy, was there was some attempt to make it into condos or a time share, then it burned. |

I met my wife at the Brickyard 38 years ago and I've been married 36 years. The Brickyard and the Margate were the two hot spots back then.

My first visits to the Lakes region was in the early 70's. I was best friends with an Antico who's family owned the Margate. We would go up every week end and stay in his grand mothers house which was attached to the motel. Before that I use to always go to Cape Cod. I fell in love with the lake and never wanted to go to the Cape ever again. |
