So I have these rudders...

found these 2 rudders while cleaning out an estate. i grabbed em for scrap, but figured they could be useful for someone's project, i just don't know anything about them or if they're even worth anything. they're made by dahmer marine, model r34-1. i googled that and was able to find them, but couldn't find any info on pricing or much else. does anyone know anything about these? thanks..

They do look like rudders to an old "woody". I don't know what they go to but I can guess what they don't. They are not the same shape as I've seen on the smaller ski boat runabouts circ. 50's and 60's. Also I thought ours had a key way groove in the top to lock it in place due to the torque of the bigger engines.

i emailed the company that apparently bought the old dahmer marine. here's what they had to say..

Unfortunately, when we acquired Dahmer Marine very little information was provided to us regarding the rudders, struts, and other underwater hardware they manufactured. We believe the Dahmer Marine R34-1 rudders are used on Luhrs boats and/or Silverton boats. We have sold a few dozen of these rudders in the past 5 years. Usually the customer will call and provide us with a part number, but not much more information. Dahmer Marine manufactured a R34-1 and a R34 rudder. The R34 rudder is a bit shorter and smaller than the R34-1 rudder, so we assume the R34 is used on smaller Luhrs boats and/or Silverton boats. Our suggested retail price for the R34-1 rudder is $683.00. Let us know if you have any questions.

that was my reaction too..

i put em on craigs for $600/pair. i doubt they'll sell, probably hard to find a buyer, but i figured i'd try before scrapping them.

For old parts like these, sometimes the price is set as a supply/demand economics exercise. The manufacturer may not stock any of these, so to sell a pair they need to build them as a 1-off, which drives the price up.

I've seen this with automotive parts for even 1 or 2 body styles back, a panel that was $150 when a vehicle was in production is suddenly $700 3 years after it's out of production.

You may need to try e-bay or if you can find which boat used these rudders, find an owner's forum and post there. It may take some time to find someone that 'needs' these particular parts, so you may need to be patient to cash in on your bounty.

good ideas, thanks rich.

Or clean them up and perhaps some supply house that sells equipment to places that want to decorate with a marine motif may be interested in them?

I don't know if these would be worth more cleaned up, or left in their natural state.

Good luck!

Sell or trade?

Maybe the Muddy Rudder Restaurant in Yarmouth, ME would trade for a few meals? Or hang them on their wall with a price tag like some places do with artwork? I once traded some Belknap College memorabliia to the Red Hill Inn for a couple of Chef Elmer's Kentucky High Pies. I think I got the better end of the deal, but they did display the sign I had.
You can donate to the NH Boat Museum auction. Somebody may buy as camp decorations.

Welcome to the Forum.
I'm intrigued that somebody (druggies?) would take rudders but not props which are more easily removed. Not a lot of twin screw Silverton's (Luhrs) on Winni. Somebody might be able to help if they had more info about the boat, assuming the rudders are still available.

dt5150 09-27-2018 07:29 AM

nope, sorry buddy. they went to the scrapper a long time ago.

rudder

Descant, They did get the props but I could not help to ask about the rudders even though it's an old thread. Thanks.
