And no mansions on Governor's Island. How did local governments exist without all that property tax?

Presumably, the German Embassy paid rent to Laconia, or at least property taxes, which owned Governor's Island, or at least it was within Laconia boundaries. At some point Laconia transferred it to Gilford. Thus began a long history of "smart" actions by Laconia leadership.

Because in those days people took care of themselves. They didn't need the government to do everything for them.

I would love to have that picture framed on my wall.

photo above from @ 1897. If you step back from the photo posted by Topwater you'll see this. It was about 20 years after the Civil War ended that the Weirs started to become popular. The first railroad station was built in 1848. Weirs Landing was pretty much an agricultural
area until the railroad came through and soon thereafter
began to develop as a resort area. The railroad leased land
to both the Civil War Veterans for their annual encampments
and to the Methodists who held yearly camp meetings.
The Methodists also rented their facilities out to other groups
such as the Baptists. The railroads always encouraged events and facilities that would encourage people to use the rails.
It wasn't until about a decade after the end of the
hostilities of the Civil War before the veterans and Methodists
began to arrive.

What's noteworthy here is that there was a THREE track layout at the Weirs back in the late 1890's which leads me to believe the rail traffic was quite brisk back then.

Think of dealing with the width of the road today if several sets of those tracks hadn't been removed.

Does anyone have an idea of what year the two extra sets of tracks were removed? I would guess around the 1930's...... Maybe postcards from the time would indicate an accurate date for track removal and road expansion.

Post number 1 from this thread with a 1933 image shows the three rails but I do not know when they were removed.

Shows the three sets of rails with Irwin's pier in the background.
