It looks like the owner of the Gilford Airport Plaza is tired of hearing the Market Basket rumors.

Although it does seem to have taken a long time, they have spent a lot of money and made a lot of improvements to the property. It looks a lot better than it did a couple of years ago and they are not done yet.

What used to work pretty good there was that old, defunct, indoor flea market.......that flea market was only open on Saturday mornings but it had some good stuff ...... here's my vote for a reincarnated indoor flea market.

So, goodbye and good riddance to any prayer for a Market Basket ..... and helloooooo to Gilford Indoor Flea Market ..... can always hope!

If you need a super-market, there's the nearby Wal-Mart and Hannafords which are both about ten times less expensive than a Stop & Shop, or a Whole Foods, down in Massachusetts ....... "Live Free or/and Eat!" So, which is lower priced for food......Wal-Mart or Hannafords...... a good question?

Nice to see that plaza being rehabilitated, but it's hard to envision it being successful without a fitness center in there somewhere.

Maybe the developer could read the tea leaves to understand that there is demand for a MB there?

It was the planning and use director for Gilford that made the comments about a Market Basket not going in there. I wouldn't be happy if I was the owner and the planning and use director was saying that about my shopping center.

Maybe the owners could put in a fitness center with $10 a month membership, bring back the bottom feeder flea market and maybe two or three restaurants where all you guys go once a year for a special occasion. So many ideas with other people's money. No wonder NH is so well known for its level of non culture.

Keep the overpriced culture out--I'll take pristine rivers, lakes, and forests without the 1% pushing the rest of us out.

Well after 27 years a UNH degree and more than enough plaid shirts, dungarees and the world's worst bread, it may be time. But then I am a glutton for punishment and I'd hate to be just one of those out of towners who come up for a few weeks in the summer and complain about how their favorite restaurant has gone out of business.

I loved going to the Mammoth Mart back in the early 70's when we would make the trip from Ohio for our two week vacation. That and the Big Banana (if I recall correctly).

A K-Mart with its K-Mart flashing blue, police light specials, accompanied by "I fought the law, and the law won" booming from the sound system would be excellent....... come on K-Mart ... I miss those flashing blue light specials while shopping for a dust covered, fish finder that's been sitting on the shelf for the last eight years!

Yes, it was the Globe.

And I love the Capital Center for the Arts in Concord and the Palace Theater in Manchester and the NH Symphony in Nashua, and especially the Currier Museum in Manchester. Plus skiing and hiking and boating...and Meadowbrook and the Flying Monkey. And the Music Hall in Portsmouth (http://www.themusichall.org/calendar/event/diane_rehm) ADid I mention the Currier? :) I might be crazy but I think NH has plenty of culture.

I remember the Globe and KMart. I even worked at the Big Banana. I do not remember Mammouth Mart.

I remember back when they were building "The Mart". Waking up listening to LNH (AM, only had AM back then) and hearing some guy operating a backhoe was killed putting the water tower up... Funny how some things stick in your mind.

They should have kept the Banana there instead of putting Shaws in :)

I do not remember it being called "Mammouth Mart"either.
I always remembered it as just "The Mart" as well. My Mother loved to shop there for all those little odds and ends that you need around the house. For Me the store was like the "Building 19" of the lakes region.

Was there ever a "Grants" store in the other plaza where the K-Mart was.

We grocery shopped at the Star Market in the shopping plaza located where Hannaford's and Lowe's are now. 🛒

My first job was at the Papa Ginos in that plaza the year the camper came crashing through it. It was crazy.

Right, that was WT Grant and then Kmart. Globe was over where Paugus Bay Plaza is now; Keller's Ice Cream was there too. Globe later moved over where The Mart used to be. Big Banana was at the traffic circle where Shaw's is now

And I can remember when you could not get a cocktail in a restaurant in NH unless it was connected to a hotel with at least 12 rooms. And one of the best hotels in Concord was the Endicott on Main Street.

Maybe it was a hotel with 10 rooms, and your state of mind didn't count right :)

Thanks for posting that. After Mammoth mart, Kings took the Gilford spot. Vacant for a number of years and then Globe coming in, closing in the early 90s.

The building looks awesome now that they've finished up. I wish all the businesses in there well and hope they do good. Looks like a couple vacant spots to fill.

They also tore up that wretched parking lot and did a new base with fresh tar! Looks awesome!!

Well, well, well, well, ..... and my, my, my, my, my ....... so, how's about this report in the August 7, Conway Daily Sun .... which reports that


the old 'Tennis Anyone' location, some outdoor tennis courts or something on McMillan Rd in North Conway will soon be serving up a new 69,845 square foot Market Basket store. This location is within one mile of a Hannaford's, Walmart, and Shaw's.

Sound's like it will be good-bye Tennis Anyone, and helloooo Market Basket ..... Conway Daily Sun article with four images, and yes, it will look like a Market Basket. So, what had been some closed and un-used outdoor tennis courts will get constructed into a Market Basket. That's a good bit of a switch! So, how come that don't happen in Gilford or Plymouth, and MB goes up north to North Conway? What has North Conway got?

With a store in Tilton, next to Walmart, it looks like Market Basket chose to bypass the talked about Gilford airport strip location, or the talked about Plymouth-Tenney Mt Hgwy spot, and go with that super-duper, retail mecca ....... drum roll here ...... rat-a-tat-tat ...... North Conway, NH.

My guess is it draws shoppers from the nearby Maine towns of Fryeburg, Lovell, Sweden and Bridgton who would not have to drive up and down that miserable Route 16 to get to North Conway.

Here's something that will never happen. If NH Route 49 were extended about seven more miles, going up the existing Livermore Rd, a gated single lane, unpaved Forest Service Rd, through the White Mountain National Forest, to the Kancamangus Hgwy, then getting to North Conway would be much more direct.

Just google 'NH Route 49 map' , go to satellite photos, and take a look-see at what would be a very build-able road to extend Rt 49 up to the Kancamangus Hgwy, and make a much more direct route to the new Market Basket in North Conway. Is this the missing link in the NH HgWy system or what? Is only seven miles, and there's already an old, unpaved Forest Service Rd for most of the distance. Seems like a no-brainer?

North Conway is basically on the other side of the world from Waterville Valley and Plymouth, and it do't have to be like this ..... is time to build a road!

Rt 93-Exit 26, Plymouth NH Market Basket?
 

Been some discussion at the Plymouth Zoning Board meeting about Market Basket building a big store, about 1 1/2 mile off the exit, in the big empty flat spot next to the State liquor & wine store.

Proposal goes with an MB out back, and an Irving Gas up front, on Rt-25, next to the McDonald's.

Looks like the two sites have been ground graded/sifted/prep'ed by www.andrewsconst.com/news/, so maybe this MB will actually happen here in Plymouth?

Maybe ten short years ago, it was all a beautiful, large flat muddy field for growing corn for the cows ..... and look at it now ..... is this progress .... mooooo? Hungry black bears used to sneak in there at night, from the nearby river bank, to chomp on the yummy fresh native NH corn.

With Hannafords getting sold or merged or something from Delhaize-Belgium to Boston's Stop & Shop, more and more Boston pricing has come to Hannafords, already ........omg! ..... the Boston pricing is coming to Hannafords. Stop & Shop had to pay a big price to purchase/merge with Hannafords and the prices on soup have gone up.

Oh ...... dear Market Basket ..... please come to Plymouth and rescue all us poor folk ...... so's we don' gotta make that long long long monthly trip way down to that there Tilton Market Basket to load up the old buckboard or maybe that new jalopy.

They are planning on building a store in Plymouth in the fairly near future.

I work at the Tilton store and it's been said that the Plynouth location is due to open next year in 2019 but don't know the month.

How I wish MB would open a store on my path to camp. Hannaford and Heath are just so darned expensive... (Though I like both for staples, a whole weekend/week adds up).

The rumor was a Market Basket was going into the movie theater shopping center in Gilford but it never happened. Would have been a good location and put a hurting on Hannafords and Shaw’s

Timber Island is located in Gilford, has lots and lots of undeveloped land, is centrally located, and is the 7th largest island in the lake with 136-acres of truly beautiful, primeval forest ...... what a super-duper, new location for a Market Basket to serve the Lake Winnipesaukee market.

People from Governor's Island could row over to the Timber Island Market Basket in a 12' rowboat w/ two 7' oars, and row themselves healthy with every trip to the Market. ......................... I say there Melania, could you puh-lease row a little faster, I wanna get something good to eat!! .... :laugh:

You know that Market Basket is rumored to have those 5" Marie Callender turkey pot pies for $1.98, making it definitely worth the row there to save two cents!

I have a 5 hour drive and don’t shop on my way up because it’s usually very late at night and they are closed.

There isn't enough land to accommodate the store and the necessary required parking on the theater lot in Gilford. Although, it would be nice to see something go in to the new and improved building. The owners spent a lot of money to improve the building and pave the parking lot and with the amount of vacancy in the building it will take a long time to recoup the investment. (Although I would pass on the new color)

It will be difficult for the Gilford area to support another grocery store within a half mile radius of 3 other stores selling groceries. The Tilton Shaws couldn't make it when the people in the area had multiple choices and I would think the same would happen in Gilford.

Not a terrible thing. I prefer MB over Shaw’s and I don’t like the Super Walmart

For me, in Center Harbor, the Plymouth store will be 10 minutes and 15 miles closer than Tilton. We do our big (every 2 weeks) shopping at Hannaford, 10 minutes from us. Weekly shopping is at Heaths, about 3 minutes from the house. The Plymouth Market Basket will be a viable alternative for our big shopping, about 15 minutes further than Hannaford. Tilton really wasn't practical.

Once it's open we will give it a try. However, we are often going to Meredith for some other reason and do our Hannaford shopping at the same time. In that type of situation, Market Basket will have to be a very strong competitor to pull us to Plymouth instead. I have shopped at Market Basket regularly when I lived further south. It was a nice place to shop and my wife said it was cheaper but nothing about the store drove me to buy there. My wife made the choice based on cost.

Now, new location, new wife. To me, it won't make much difference. My wife likes saving a bit at Hannaford (vs. Heath's) for our big shopping but likes the daily convenience and meats at Heath's. I suspect we may go to Plymouth and check out some of the other stores up there, including Walmart making the trip more worthwhile. If that works out, we might continue going. If it's just going to Market Basket I suspect it will be only an occasional trip.

Here's three, one-of-a-kind, local, charity thrift reasons to go shopping in Plymouth, all close enough to the future Market Basket:

Ladders Thrift Shop, a huge 2nd hand store, with two large floors of clothing for all; men, women, children; & household items, located down the south end on Main St, next to Rite Aid,

Flipp'n Furniture (a division of Ladders), a furniture 2nd hand store located on Tenny Mtn Hgwy, close to Walmart,

The ReStore, a furniture, kitchen appliance, bathroom fixture, hdwe, plumb, electric, paint, + plus, 2nd hand store, also close to Walmart.

Both Flipp'n and Restore have box trucks with volunteers who do pick-ups by coming to your location to remove donated kitchen appliances and furniture.

Down at The ReStore, for just 50-bucks I got me an 18"-wide Frigidaire, all-stainless steel inside, white outside, late model, basically brand new $550 dish washer that runs on totally unfiltered Lake Winnipesaukee, lake water, for doing the dishes. How good is that!

So, this new Plymouth Market Basket will have a 55-60-seat, food court style, eating area, with wifi and a large screen tv. That is very interesting and something that none of the other super-markets in the area have. Hey there Market Basket, any chance you can highlight the Tennis Channel on your big tv, now that WTA-Woman's Tennis is back. Woman's tennis usually has lengthy back & forth points with 10-20-25 hits across the net, while men's tennis is usually much more brief, like with five hits and less.

You know the nearby McDonald's does not try to attract customers to eat inside and the inside eating area is plain white, and as totally stark and unwelcome as it can be. The Plymouth McDonald's would prefer all its customers use the take-out window. The Plymouth and Meredith McDonald's are owned and run by separate and different franchise owners, and it really shows.

No, only Heath's has the free coffee, and no, it's 9-am right now and I need to get this dock out today, or else it could be a big frozen-icy problem tomorrow. This needs some high energy motivation ...... hut-hut-hut-arrrrrgggghhhh ....plus it's snow'n. It's me vs this damn dock and boat lift ...... do or die!
