Good Sunday morning all.
Hope all is well.
What are your summer camping plans?

Where it all started

This is where it all started for me. My mom's aunt and uncle, Millie and Jim Foster were Scottish immigrants, and I believe it was in the 1930's that Uncle Jim and Aunt Millie took a train from Andover MA to Lake Winnipesaukee. They got off at Lake Shore Park and seeing the view across the "loch" to the mountains, according to my mom, Uncle Jim said that spot was as close to Scotland as he was going to get without going back.
He ended up getting a spot (just a platform and wall tent) and started coming up to the lake. At some time, he, along with other tenters, were able to erect a small cabin on the platform. In the summer of 1946, my folks brought me up to the lake for the first time, and far from the last.
The camp was called "The Wee Hoose", small house in Scottish dialect.

As a preschooler, I would ask if we were going "up the 'Saukee". (Winnipesaukee was just to long a word for me to pronounce). That phrase became how we referred to our trips up to the lake.

And now that I live here, I'm always Upthesaukee !

Thanks for posting a great picture.

Dave
