Music requests
There have been a few music related threads here before but with summer coming and hopefully better days ahead I thought it was time for another music thread.
I grew up with 5 brothers and 2 sisters and different music could be heard eminating from all our bedrooms at any given time. I think we got it from Mom who today at 86 still loves it when she hears a song by the Moody Blues, Beatles, Bee Gees as well as music from her own generation. As a kid I fell asleep at night with The Who cranking from one brothers room, Beatles in the next, Aerosmith coming from down the hall, John Denver coming from the attic and Sinatra playing in the kitchen. It was awesome. If music is as important to you as it is to me, then you know what I mean when I say the first few notes or chords of a favorite song can take you right back to a place and time and who you were with. Everyone has favorites. In some cases you may not even know why it's a favorite other than it just "hits a nerve". I have 2 requests: -1.What are your absolute top 3-5 songs. Songs that no matter how many times you've heard it, you just can't get enough. and artist that performed them? (share a You Tube link if you like) -2.What was the first album you bought? I'm hoping this will uncover some great songs I can add to my music library. Thanks for playing and have a fantastic summer!! Here's a couple of mine: Bee Gees---"Fanny Be Tender" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgDbE6WOyws Joe Bonamassa---"Mountain Time" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiMqvPYPvQ0 Seals and Crofts---"Hummingbird" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q97QecyanZw Roxy Music---"More Than This" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOnde5c7OG8 Glen Campbell---"Wichita Lineman" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HFCuBLAjXo Andrea Bocelli/Sarah Brightman "Time To Say Goodbye" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L_yCwFD6Jo My first album was "Who's Next by The Who |
I can't come up with just 3-5 songs but here's some groupings:
Grateful Dead - He's Gone, The Wheel, Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mountain, China Cat Sunflower/I Know you Rider, St. Stephen Bruce Springsteen - most anything pre 1990 Four Seasons - December, 1963 (Oh What a Night) - seems odd, but a great song on the water Allman Brothers - Blue Sky Jimmy Buffet - Margaritaville, Scarlet Begonias, Southern Cross, Fins, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes Forgot first album. Supertramp, Breakfast in America. There were 45's before that, though! |
Accidentally posted in Restaurants section
I PM'd "Webmaster" to move my thread/post to General discussion

Nice to have a fun topic for a change.

Music
Being a long time musician, I am honestly having an issue right now. The band, Bend the Ride, had a Great schedule heading into the spring/summer. Now we can't even rehearse together. Henry is doing a pretty cool thing playing on the net, but for me it's pretty lonesome. Playing music in front of an audience has been something I have done for the last 50 years and get Great enjoyment out of.
So Please once this get's somewhat back to normal, Please support your local clubs and especially musicians ! Thanks, Bill www.BendtheRide.com |

Help! by...really? I have to tell you who did that one?
In My Life... by see above. Here There And Everywhere... by see above. So Far Away... by Carole King. Eighteen... by Alice Cooper. My first album comes with a story: My dad had an appointment with a retina specialist in Boston and took me along. My job was to help him drive home to CT during the rush hour with dilated pupils. Because I was only thirteen that task was limited to yelling "RED LIGHT! and LOOK OUT!" Yes, we made it home alive and I had a new LP. While dad was getting his eyes inspected with a 3 million candle power searchlight I wandered the streets of Boston looking for a record store. Finding the record store was not quite as hard as finding my way back to the doctor's office but I made it. I surfed the record racks looking for an album with the latest hit song from T-Rex titled "Get It On." I found what I thought was it but noticed that there was no playlist on the album's exterior. Wanting to be sure before parting with my 99 cents, I opened the record's sleeve for a peek inside. At that very moment a voice from behind gruffly said "I suppose you will be buying that one!" "Of course!" I responded" as I brought it to the register. 99 cents plus tax later, I was the proud owner of an album that not only did not contain "Get It On" but one that was so uninteresting that I've forgotten its name. |

Given the comments on this thread, the average age of the forum must be around 83!
Some oldies I enjoy ("Into the Mystic" is a fine one, above): "Bring it on Home" (Sam Cook—really, most of his stuff), "Drift Away" (either version), "The Girl I love She Got Black Wavy Hair" and "The Lemon Song" (Zeppelin)... Two summers ago, our slideshow was defined by "Song for Another Time." Last summer, "Old Town Road" (!). In terms of "summer" music, I just put Spotify on and choose either laid-back country or beach mixes and let 'er run. Sent from my SM-G950U using Winnipesaukee Forum mobile app |

Not quite 83!
I was here, in the summer between 7th and 8th grades (from Ct.). I went to a Junior High School (7-9/then 3yr. high school)- ("Middle Schools hadn't been invented yet!)This was a time when it was very unusual to see license plates from my state.
Anyway- none of my friends knew where I was, other than in New Hampshire. One day I actually got some mail! It was a post card, post marked from my home town. On it were some hand drawn musical notes surrounding the words "We're having a 'Heat Wave' "- Obviously the great tune by Martha and the Vandellas. Never found out who sent it! |
A good tune made great by Linda...

Little River Band
Back in 1983, Little River Band did an HBO concert from the Melbourne (Australia) Concert Hall with their relatively new lead singer John Farnham who had taken over for former long time lead singer Glenn Shorrock.
The concert is widely acclaimed to be one of the best ever, if not the very best, concerts. I video taped the concert while watching it on my TV and created a cassette tape so I could play it in my car on trips to the lake. I later created a CD of the concert. It took me almost 20 years before I saw them live at a little venue in Plymouth, Mass. They were great even though the line-up had changed. Here's one of my favorites from the Melbourne concert. Be patient as there's a great 2min 12 sec guitar solo as a lead-in: DOWN ON THE BORDER https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xOS99T6-U8 |

After growing up with nearly all the music already named in this thread, figured I'd add selections that are more recent (and completely unfitting considering what folks have listed).
-For relaxing: Stick Figure - Fire on the Horizon; Sound of the Sea Sublime with Rome - Take It Or Leave It; Wherever You Go Steam Powered Giraffe - Honeybee The various mixes made by Dyalla Lots of Jack Johnson Mostly anything from ChilledCow or Chillhop -For something that requires a little more energy: Mastodon - Toe to Toes; Steambreather Ghost - Cirice; Absolution; Faith; Square Hammer Avatar - Statue of the King; Hail the Apocolypse; The King Welcomes You to Avatar Country I could have gone with Tool or Alice In Chains or numerous other mainstream rock bands but the 3 bands listed above are a lot of fun to listen to, IMO. |

War on Drugs
My 24 YO son turned me onto this band last night. This is a great live version but it is jammish- lyrics start at approx 7 minutes in.

We have a vibrant music scene out here in stumptown.
Portlander Katie Lang teamed up with Neko Case and Laura Veirs to create a one time only masterpiece of an album, "Case, Lang and Veirs." Here's my favorite cut, recorded locally, which helps me keep my eyes on the horizon during these troubled times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhMZLX2Q274 *crank up the volume* |

newer jam bands
If you enjoyed War on Drugs, here are a few more newish jam bands that you might want to sample. Most have come to my attention by either Pandora mixes, WMWV (you can pick this great station up clearly across much of the lake), or the music the lifties play at the Profile chair...

I find bands, unknown to me, to have some interesting names.
There are several online chord chart sites for guitar. They have alphabetical listings of bands and songs with chords as interpreted by the posters. "Unusual" does not even begin to describe the names of some of these bands. I wonder what would happen if the band named "Death by Unga Bunga" ever made it big. Would a modern day George Martin or Brian Epstein be needed to convince the lads that a different image was in order? The first school dance I attended was a "battle of the bands". The cafeteria had a band at each end and a bunch of nerve racked eighth graders in between. The bands were "Hard Tail" and "Straf". Curious about the name, I asked one of the members of Straf for an explanation. He told me "It's farts spelled backwards." |

My son was in a band with some buddies in high school and they were actually pretty darn good. On their way to do their first open mic night they realized they had no name. Because the open mic night was at a library, they quickly came up with the name Dewey and The Decimals. |
Funny band names...I was in a band for the better part of 20 years that had practical, meaningful names that conveyed the type of music we played. One iteration was “Rhythm Coalition” then the co-leaders split to do their own thing and the 2nd name was and is still “The Souled Out Show Band”
I quit about 10 years ago (load ins and load outs get old with a 10-12 piece band) but our guitar player had a side project that he called “DCDM” when I asked what it meant he said “dead cows don’t moo” :D |
Band Names
I've played in numerous bands over the course of my life, not all of the names make sense. Started with The Liverpool Gas Company in High School, then Stone Cross in college, then Sweet Misery, Rick Clement and the King's Cross, Friends, Ulterior Motive, Smokin', Not Quite Right, and currently Bend the Ride.
Don't ask me to explain the meaning behind some of these names, but they made sense at the time. Hope everyone is staying safe and sane, Bill www.BendtheRide.com |
