eating cables

I have a family of mink living in rocks near my cottage. When my pontoon boat is moored they dive down and pickup a clam and settle in the back well and eat, I suspect when they finish they naw on my speedo and RPM cable, Anyone had a situation like this.

Munching Minks

Don't think that these beautiful visitors would be interested in the items which you mentioned in your post. The mink family that dwells in our breakwater has never bothered any items on the boat docked next to them. We have never seen any evidence of a visit from them on board the boat. 🐻

I have a mink/s that lives under my dock. They have never done any damage to boat and property other than leaving a few clam shells behind. Are you saying they did in fact gnaw your wires or you are just worried about them doing it?? I would be surprised if they did any gnawing of your wires or any boat part as they are mainly fish eaters.

Are you sure it didn't happen over winter storage?
Our neighbor covered his daughters car while she was at school over the winter. Rodents got in a damaged multiple things.

Oh, Yes they are in there, Thurstons told me it was probably a mink, and yes for the last two weekends I have found empty clam/mussels shells in this void, and also a remnant of a chewed wire, that might have been there for a while, thinking of putting moth balls back there while boat is on mooring.

I have had to repair my speed odometer cable three times because of minks chewing on it.

Peppermint oil. Had a friend who would migrate down south every winter and year after year would come home and rodents would nest in his car and chew the cables. Cost him big $$$ every year. After trying everything, he literally put Peppermint oil under his car and has yet to have a problem since. Want to say it's been about 8 years or so...

I've persoanlly never tried it, so can't give you my honest opinion, just sharing someone elses in hopes it might help.

Here's an old thread that is related.
