Not for nothing, but if you needed to know, you would!

Bad taste, IMHO!

Am I missing something??

I'm not sure about the response Jmen24 gave. Wasn't Living the dream just asking a question??

Drowning, meaning someone died! Tie that to "rumor" (in the heading), equals bad taste and is akin to gossip.

As stated, my opinion! If you think that type of question, asked that way, is ok then that's on you not me!

What better way to get your head snapped off....ask a question.

codeman671 07-14-2014 10:07 PM

Yes, it's true. Saw it on the news.

GTO 07-14-2014 10:10 PM

Not a rumor

Just saw it on the 11:00 news. Person drowned at the park. Was found in seven feet of water outside the swim line.

BrownstoneNorth 07-14-2014 10:13 PM

The, alas, non-rumor

Which wouldn't qualify as "gossip" by any definition even if it weren't true.

GILFORD, N.H.*(AP) — State police say a man has drowned in Lake Winnipesaukee.

It happened just before 5 p.m. Monday. State police say their marine patrol received a 911 call reporting that lifeguards at Ellacoya State Park were performing CPR on an unresponsive man.

A lifeguard recovered the man in water that was about 7 feet deep. Guards continued performing CPR until marine patrol officers and Gilford fire and rescue officers arrived.

The man was taken to Lakes Region General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity wasn't immediately released. An autopsy has been scheduled.

Thanks

Thanks for confirming. I hate to assume on what was heard at a local store until it was confirmed. I can always depend on this forum. Thanks.

Awfully sad situation.

Oh......Never mind!

I see no problem with someone saying something as long as they point out it was a rumor which Living did. Usually where there's smoke there's fire, so what harm does it do to mention it?

You must not read any reporting from the news media because most of their writings are rumor and gossip...IMO that is.

I thought the question from the OP was appropriate.

You know something, you're right! Clearly I am not on the bandwagon and I must be overreacting!

The scary thing is I am the only one that feels the way this question was presented, was in bad taste! The comment sections of those news outlets is a mirror image of this thread, with one difference; the information was presented to them first, they didn't go sniffing for it!

It had nothing to do with the OP, it was discussed at the store. They couldn't wait for the information to be released, so they came here for the inside scoop!

It is obvious that I am in the minority on this one! We can't always have the popular opinion and I am OK with mine on this!

Enjoy your day!

AC2717 07-15-2014 09:08 AM

Beauty of the USA!
we can all have opinions and go our own ways without being killed or shot at for them or disappear!
I see both sides on this one, on this case I ran down the side of wanting to find out more and glad we were told because it is always a good reminder of how dangerous the lake can be

Scott's Yott 07-15-2014 11:29 AM

opinions are like ass***** and sounds like someone has a bug up theirs

Jeanzb1 07-15-2014 11:37 AM

Drowning confirmed at Ellacoya yesterday. Identity not given. This was just on the news.

Scott's yott....

I couldnt agree more......WOW!

Chaselady 07-15-2014 11:45 AM

My guess is that a majority of threads on the forum are started with questions, rumors, curiosity and just plain nosiness. If you PC the day lights out of everyone's post it's not going to be worth reading.
And if that happens what will we do without the wild speculation that these posts lead to? For example, the Spindle Point accident? No one knew what really happened, but a lot of people had opinions. And judgement before the facts were known. No one jumped on the author of that thread. They just took it and ran with it.

tis 07-15-2014 11:56 AM

I agree with you Chaselady. I also know that sometimes people state "facts" on here that are NOT facts. At least if you say it could be a rumor, you aren't stating it as a fact when you are not sure. And I also agree that half the stuff we get from the news media is not correct. I have been to meetings where the newspaper gets the names wrong and often I say to myself: "Was the reporter at the same meeting I was at?"

So I think the thing to remember is these forum are for fun and to enjoy and not get too uptight about. After all, we do get a lot of news on here first!

Drowning in the news

Unfortunately, someone drowned in Lake Winnipesaukee this past weekend. You can find news about it from the search engines. From the AP;

GILFORD, N.H. (AP) — State police say a man has drowned in Lake Winnipesaukee.

Folks do you know what is incredibly wrong about this thread. A person has drowned! That is a fact. A family is suffering. Wife and kids are crying. There is going to be a funeral. And through this whole thread only one person recognized the awful death for many love ones. And that person is the one who asked the original question. I won't name names but some were shamefully challenging why the question was asked and what is truth vs rumors. That is shameful!

I agree, perhaps the OP was trying to gather info on the mechanism to warn himself/herself or others of a particular danger. That I can deal with, the wording seemed to indicate something else. I can't read minds. In any event, my sincere condolences to all involved.

znh 07-16-2014 01:42 PM

We know a couple of the lifeguards at Ellacoya, that must be a terrible experience. I was a lifeguard when I was younger and had to rescue a couple of people but never had to deal with death or even trying to resuscitate someone.

It is also very sad that someone died while doing something so innocent as swimming with friends. I would like to know more of the details of what happened, wonder if they will ever release that information.

Heartfelt condolences to the friends and families as well, horrible tragedy for sure...

Safety Reminder

This post reminds me of a very helpful link that was provided last year about surface drowning.

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning

It's very sad to hear of people getting hurt or even worse, dying on our beautiful lake. I think this a good reminder that enjoying the "Smile of the Great Spirit" is also about safety.

I reenforce this with everyone and anyone, especially people coming to visit for the day and still with people I know who live here or are here all the time. Drowning is nothing like it is portrayed on TV / film. It is silent and quick and you have to be very vigilant, especially with the younger kids. I cringe when I see groups of kids playing chicken or 'king of the dock' or anything like that. Don't want to be a stick in the mud, but it's a lot better option then someone drowning from a simple knock on the head or accident...

Misty Blue 07-19-2014 05:19 AM

Thanks Cate

The drowning message has to be said over and over again.

I will repeat myself, again. Kids and PFDs. I have never heard of a child drowning from a vessel that was underway. Yet, that is the only time that PFDs are required to be warn by children 12 and under.

Kids no not drown from moving boats. They drown at the dock, at the beach, in the pool, in the brook, etc.

It happens. The family is heading out to the island. Parents are huffing food, and other stuff from the car to the boat. Dad thinks that Mom is watching Junior and Mom thinks that Dad is watching. It is quiet and happens fast.

Please PFDs on kids near the water. I'll get off of my band wagon now.

I heard that the lifeguard at the beach did a great job in a tough situation.

Misty Blue.

Swimming lessons...... everyone should know how to swim. I don't know the circumstances of this gentleman's death, he may have been a good swimmer and had another problem. But in my opinion all children should get swimming lessons at an early age. Adults who don't know how to swim should also take lessons. Personally I think a swim test should be part of the requirement at some point during school, the earlier the better, many deaths would be prevented.

The guy was 27 and apparently intoxicated and fully clothed, including still having his shoes on. So who really knows what the hell he was thinking at the time...
