A day at the boat ramp

This video is soooooo funny because it is soooooo true. The closer humor gets to truth, the funnier it is.

I don't want to single out one gender, so I will leave it up to you (the reader) to decide which gender is playing which part. Almost for sure, at a boat ramp, you can see a family pull up to the ramp area towing a boat, the driver squares the vehicle and trailer with the launching ramp, gets out of the vehicle to prepare the boat to be launched, then tells the spouse to get in the vehicle and JUST let off the brake and go STRAIGHT back. Reasonable directions, very clearly presented. However, for some unknown reason, as soon as the spouse gets behind the wheel and lets off the bake, there is an irresistible urge to TURN the wheel. And the rest, boys and girls is best described by watching this video.

Anybody ever put their boat in and forgot to put in the transom plug?

There is a solution to the madness

I used to work for the highway department, and we had to back a trailer loaded with Gravely mowers and trimmers, etc. into a narrow garage each day. The first time I had to do it (as an 18 yr old), I thought, "slow and steady, subtle turns of the wheel...all good." I felt pretty confident until I looked in the mirror and saw a bunch of smiling veteran employees gathering to watch and have some fun at the rookie's expense. Nothing like a critical audience to put the pressure on! Good times.

Perhaps the real reason that Ames Farm stopped public launching was the liability aspect of the spectators in their chaise lounges so close to perils at the ramps.
Remember is well, and then again there was Roland directing traffic....

You may have posted this in jest, but Ames Farm did not voluntarily close their ramps to the public, it was forced upon them by the town. Really sad when one person with an ax to grind can shut down a revenue stream for a long standing business (the property has been in the family since 1777). That being said, I do enjoy the quiet with the ramps closed.

Oh yes absolutely in jest. I loved launching there because the ramps were wide and you didn't loose an axel on your trailer with the drop off. At one point I was there on a nice blistering hot August morning, and this women who claimed she won this boat / trailer combo had no clue, so I helped her until her an her partner were heading towards Diamond Island.
I do understand some of the issues as I myself would circle around several times just to get into a queue with the 100 or so bass boats scrambling to get out and participate in the "whatever derby" awards.
Would love to have Ames Farm open again with some covenants for abutters.

I think the tournaments were the death of public launching. I don’t think it will return any time soon.

Are the docks still available for those of us who like to boat to Ames Farm for breakfast?

gillygirl 05-25-2021 10:09 AM

Yes, they sometimes post on their Facebook page which docks are available for the restaurant that week.
