Woodlands Tavern Closing for the Season on Dec. 1.

From their Facebook Page:

We will be CLOSING FOR THE SEASON on December 1. Sorry for any inconvenience!

They then responded to a question as to whether it was for Christmas or for the Winter. Their reply was:

Winter. Usual maintenance, repairs etc. It's an old building that needs work done. The building was neglected for a long, long time.

Interesting...

A cut and paste from their Facebook page on November 30th. And for what is worth, their sign says closed for the season.

Today is our last day for the season. We are offering our regular Sunday specials, burgers, ribeye and beef and musroom pie along with the rest of the menu. $2 beer specials.

I never stopped at Woodlands Tavern to eat because the place looks spooky to me.
I understand the food is/was good there, but I just felt uncomfortable about going inside. Also there was never very many cars parked there and I don't like eating where there isn't at least one or two cars there.

Yeah, a cook and at least one wait-staff would be a good starter for cars in the lot.

Woodlands Tavern

Doesn't anyone in the forum remember the ridiculous name calling match between the "chef-owner" of this place and or about the "executive chef" at Lavinia's within the past year, showing how juvenile the Woodlands owner is/was. His ego, which came out clearly in his posts, was much larger than the empty parking lot.

We ate there a couple of times and the food was OK but nothing special.

Patiently Watching 12-10-2014 06:04 AM

Anyone with a gift certificate, I would contact them and try to redeem for cash ASAP if indeed they are closing... As most on here may be aware, just because they are out of business, does not mean they do not need to honor them.

Patiently: I think you are being very optimistic. Most failed businesses don't have a ton of excess cash hanging around! I'd say any gift certificates are toast.

Patiently Watching 12-10-2014 06:26 AM

I realize this may be their reality, however the law is very clear and I would encourage any gift card holders to attempt to redeem them and if not satisfied, contact the NH AG office to file a complaint. Maybe even call the local police - it is a form of theft...

The reality is that even if not able to collect now, perhaps they can make it more difficult for unethical business owners to get a future license.

A former business that I owned and which closed almost 18 months ago is still making good on outstanding gift cards... IT IS the law.

More of a reason to always purchase gift cards on your credit card. At least then if they close within one year of purchase, you can recoup your funds from your credit card company.

I miss the William Tell.

How about somebody putting in a French restaurant there?

The lakes region needs a good French restaurant, offering both peasant and haute cuisine.

Jeanzb1 12-10-2014 05:54 PM

I am hoping that their permanent closing is just a rumor. They poured their hearts, souls, and much $$$$ into renovating the former William Tell.

jrc 12-10-2014 08:10 PM

Restaurants fail a lot, if I get a gift card to a small or new place, it gets used fast.

Even big chains have their issues, remember if a company goes bankrupt, a gift card owner is just another creditor. If they don't file for bankruptcy, you have every right to demand a refund for your card. But you can't get blood from a stone.

Sometimes a competing business or the replacement business will give you some credit for your card as an incentive to find a new customer.

I agree with Jeanzb1, I hope they reopen, never got to try the place.

I agree, There isn't a French or Mediterranean type restaurant in the area. Nor is there a German or Polish. Plenty of others.

Gretchen's was French and the pastry was second to none. Unfortunately the restaurant had a falling out with the owners.

If Lobster Pound was smart they would have capitalize on whet is not in the area. Good luck in being another Italian restaurant.

Please, by all means, state your credentials and your source. Inquiring minds want to know.

Plenty of places close for the winter due to lack of patronage during the off-season months. The fact that they gave it a go and tried to stay open all season long with constant negativity coming from here speaks volumes. I've gone there a number of times and have yet to have poor service or a bad meal. I agree that Eric needs to keep his mouth shut and stick to the culinary side of the business but people are so quick to jump on the bandwagon and crap on everyone...Groupthink is dangerous.

Stop in there in the springtime and give it a try, THEN formulate an opinion. Don't take other people's word for it.

Bumble2249 12-16-2014 09:13 PM

I dint have a negative opinion about the place. Just stating the facts that they are not opening back up in the spring. I don't need "credentials" to do that.

From the Woodland's Tavern Facebook page on Dec 10th "Matt not sure where you are getting your information but it is incorrect. We plan to be open in the spring.".

So you are implying they are being less than truthful in what they are posting. I feel that requires an explanation to be fair with everyone here.

Here's a thought...

Erik says he will be open in the spring... that is from late March to late June, then it is summer.

In the meantime, we can sit back and enjoy other fine dining in the area, and if a for sale sign pops up, then we can talk some about it.

In the meantime, let it go:rolleye2:.

Would everyone please calm down! :-)
I know everyone likes throwing my name around since I made that dreaded "foot in mouth" post some 10 months ago,, but since 99% of you have never met, nor spoken with me directly, I would like to offer some info on this recent thread and then I will drift back into obscurity...

1. I only had a 10% interest in WT.
2. My (personally ) only post regarding the closing for the winter was on 16 Nov.
3. My (personally ) last post was at thanksgiving, concerning the power outage due to the storm. I removed myself from FB ADMIN role at that time (about the 26th nov)
4 Any posts or comments regarding a time frame for reopening, come from the major investors of the WT, not me.
5 Many establishments close for the winter due to the downturn in area population. We all know how insanely tough it can get around here.. ask any businessman!!!
6 I would like to see the WT reopen as well, however, I will not be at the helm of the kitchen and will not make any speculation as to a timetable for reopening.

I hope this gives some clarity to all your concerns. In the mean time, enjoy the winter, and I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas & New Year!! Life's to short to sweat the little things!!

Thanks for the info Eric. It is helpful. I enjoyed the food on both of my visits to the WT when you ran the kitchen.

Based on what Eric has posted, the majority owners have control of the Facebook page and since they took control, they have twice posted on that page that they are coming back in the spring. The sign out front also states this. Based on what Eric has stated, he will no longer be running the kitchen, so the owners need to find someone to take this on. Eric also stated he is or was a 10% owner.

No where have I heard or read from any owner or on the WT Facebook page that the place is closing. Hard for me to draw the conclusion that the WT is closing from what has been presented. For those that feel they are closing, how do you get to that conclusion? Not trying to start an argument, just trying to understand.

For the record, I am holding a gift certificate and that is why I am interested in this.

Just curious if anyone has heard anything ....

Driving by Woodlands Tavern several times a week, I have not seen any signs of repairs or construction going on. Sign is still up saying closed for the season, but their website is no longer on line.

Being a month of so from when many "seasonal" restaurants open back up for business after taking the winter off, I am curious if anyone has heard anything new about the restaurant re-opening. Haven't seen any help wanted signs or ads, either.

Not re-opening

Just saw a Facebook posting by the owner Renee within the past half hour....They are not reopening for business. Sorry, Resident2B about the gift certificate. I hope there aren't too many of them out there.

Resident 2B 05-07-2015 12:22 PM

I hope they did not sell a lot of the gift certificates knowing they were not going to reopen. One of the posters on this site had info that they were not reopening, but I did not believe him because the website said they would reopen. I should have listened to the poster, not their website.

I am hoping they contact me. If not, I will contact the AG's office. Sounds to me after re-reading the posts that the owners' where selling gift certificates knowing they were about to close for good, but saying they were going to reopen.

Here is an answer he replied after somebody asked about the GC's.

Brenda - we had a company that tracked the gc sales for us. I will have to try and contact them to see if they have the information for what there is for outstanding balances. I will get back to you when I have that info.

I know the owners on a personal basis and can assure you that they wouldn't knowingly deceive people to get ahead, financially or otherwise. I was planning on posting up the news today but others beat me to the punch--with any luck another investor will buy it up quickly and take all of the hard work they have poured into improving the building and grounds and continue it. I think it's a shame they are letting it go.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment of them. People that do what they did are far from honorable. When three others on this site knew it was all over five months before they admitted it, tells me they were not being honest at all. They should have stopped selling the GC and/or made a timely refund late last fall. Now we have to chase them through our credit card company. Great friends!

I hope no one buys it and they lose their shirts. No way the way they did what they did is acceptable.

If they used a 3rd party vendor for their gift cards, it should be no issue to look up the value of unused cards...

I hope that those people who were duped into giving these people last fall (and the others who bought cards along the way) are successful in getting refunds without too much hassle.

As stated by others before, the NH Attorney General's office is usually very helpful with these matters and the law is abundantly clear that gift cards do not expire nor are they invalidated when a business goes under.

Misha888 05-08-2015 07:52 AM

This morning's post on Facebook . . .

"It is with a very heavy heart that I make this post. We will not be re-opening this spring. We had all intentions of opening when we closed in December. Many things changed over the winter in our personal lives and we have had to make some major changes. Unfortunately one of them is to close the tavern.

We would like to thank all of our patrons. We met many wonderful people and made new friends. We do appreciate your patronage and will miss you very much.

Renee"

I wish them all the best. Sucks to see dreams die and lots of money wasted. Being a restauranteur is one of the hardest businesses to succeed in.

Resident 2B 05-08-2015 11:46 AM

I contacted my credit card company and they are in the process of refunding the money I spent on the GCs. Good news to me.

I contacted you personally via private message through this forum and told you that we were doing what we can with our processing company to get the value of the gift certificates and would get back to you with an answer.
I love how you did not even put that on this site instead you decide to bash me when you don't even know me. My mother is currently in home hospice dying. I have left the restaurant business to take care of my family. I did not get into this business to deceive anyone. My husband and I have lost lots of money in this venture and will lose more before it is over.

Oh and as far as Bumble knowing we were closing for good
He knows more than me because I own the place and that decision was not made until March when my mother went into the hospital. So Mr. know it all better check his sources.

So for all of you out there who get your jollies passing judgement on people that you don't know. Have a ball and keep on trashing me and my business. I know that I am an honest person and so do my friends and family.

Go ahead and judge away.

Thank you Mr. Polaris for the support. I really do appreciate it.

No, I just think it shows your true character that you think it's funny when hardworking, honest people pour their heart and soul (not to mention a **** of money) into making a once proud staple of the lakes region a functioning business again. It saddens me because I know just how difficult the whole process was for them, and the fact that it did not result in a profitable venture just plain sucks.

Hey, when did I mention it being "funny"?? I simply stated what was happening. That's all. You should check your facts before making acquisitions about someone's "character".

Quite frankly, I just noticed the private message once you called my attention to it. They do not pop out and I rarely get them, so I do not look for them and until now I did not notice. However, I thank you for sending the message. I have not yet opened the private message.

As I stated, I dealt with this through my credit card company. I gave the 4 GCs as gifts and they are not in my possession, so it was much easier for me to handle it this way. They were purchased in two separate transactions.

Also, I am not getting my "jollies off". I just wanted the money I trusted you with returned. It is also an embarrassment to me, and I assume others, to give GCs as gifts that are now worthless.

My hope is that a restauranteur will be the winning bid, and we will all have the opportunity to enjoy a nice meal in a nice seeing.

Probably because some decent people who tried to make a go at owning a restaurant were not successful and lost everything..... not only that but that building has a lot of memories for many people around here. Before Woodlands there was the William Tell which was there for many years....so yeah it is too bad to see the place abandoned and on the auction block.

I wonder: is the current owner of the property part of the Woodlands group, or did the owners of the WilliamTell lease the building out to them?

It is owned by J E R K LLC (yep, no joke!). The LLC ties back to a residential address in Northfield, NH. The building was purchased in 2013 so I would say its owned by the person that ran the Woodlands Tavern.

This was the place Eric Weiss owned for a time . Take a look at the things he posted on the Lavinias site and tell me again what a "Decent " guy he might be. Memories of this place are posted with descriptions of the place being "scarie " . Then there was the little closing fiasco with selling gift certificates and making the credit card companies return the money not the restaurant.
Not the memories of the lake most people are looking for

Auction

There was an auction of the property this morning at 11:00 AM. Does anyone have an update on the results?

Eric was not the majority owner, far from it actually and held a very small 10% ownership status. Whatever issues he had with Lavinias or any other place, I could honestly care less.

The many many years and memories the William tell operated successfully out of that building and the short time the Woodlands owners poured their heart and soul and many hours into the place just to try and make it successful and then lose everything is more than enough reason to feel saddened by seeing it go to auction.

I guess I'm just not heartless and neither is the majority of lakes region residents... ;)

Former Woodlands Tavern Chef ?

Not sure if this is the same Eric Weiss from Woodland's Tavern, but here's a person of same name from Alton who set up a "Go Fund Me' to open a Bar & Grille. This from the "Go Fund Me" page;

William Tell

On a more upbeat note: I drove by the William Tell for YEARS and never stopped there, as it was nothing to look at. Finally, we "took a chance" and ate there and it was fantastic. A year after finding this great place just up the street, the owners retired. Just my luck.

What?

"Nothing to look at?"

The building is quite distinctive: evocative of Switzerland / Deutschland.

Saw a note in "The Real Report" in last week's Baysider that 1602 Mt Major Hwy, Rest/Bar sold for $150K to "1602 Mount Major Lake LLC". The reg of deeds lists the buyer's address as PO Box 333, Alton Bay.

It was a foreclosure sale.

Mr. V 03-22-2017 10:55 AM

That's one hecuva great price.

Let's hope the owner plans a Swiss restaurant!

That P.O. Box is associated with Prudential Real Estate. I too was hoping for another German/Austrian restaurant. Too bad!

upthesaukee 03-23-2017 08:56 AM

No direct information, but... one of my friends knows the new owner, and he understands that the owner wants to reopen as a restaurant and is looking for a someone to manage it as such.

I've posted before about how it would be a good location for a French restaurant; given the French-Canadian presence in NH, what about a French-Canadian bistro?

"Sir, would you like poutine with your escargot?"

Pine Island Guy 06-17-2017 09:48 PM

Not this year...

Not sure who bought it at auction, but there is now a new "for sale" sign in front... so it looks like no new restaurant in the near future...
