Foxes
 

Hello everyone,

This weekend we discovered three juvenile foxes living under our barn. I suspect there are adults about, but they are more discreet!

Does anyone have suggestions for humane ways to encourage them to move elsewhere? Or do we need to trap them?

In my experience they will move on once the pups get big enough. Every few years we have some in our yard, it helps with the rodent population :) But it can be hard on local cats :(

If you make the mother nervous with increased activity, she may move them herself.

My neighbor actually had a grey fox bring off a litter a couple weeks ago under his 3 season room. It took a couple weeks but seem to finally have moved on as they just dont like humans. We talked to a trapper and he told us to buy some amonia and soak some rags with it and toss them underneath. It should help move them which we did. Also can try setting up a strobe light or a light used on a truck for snowplowing or a noise machine and run it for a while.

We tried several things: putting a boom box in the barn, and spreading predator urine around the entrance to their den. Nothing seemed to bother them much.

In the end, we had the perfect experience. They stayed around and would play merrily in front of the kids for a few weeks, then disappeared on their own. Looks like you were right about their moving on once they know humans are around.

Foxes are cool and interesting animals!
We have grays and reds around and a den in the back woods.
Last week we heard something squawking outside and as always went out to the porch to investigate with a spotlight...the spot revealed a pair of eyes staring back at us which was the gray fox...it was barking with high pitched sound...further spotting revealed a porkupine waddling away in a different direction. We think ther may have been a prickly encounter in the dark of night as the fox disappeared into the woods, still barking loudly!
