I had my OMC Cobra skeg repaired at East Coast Welding in Gilford. They had at least six Mercruiser drives to repair as well. I was very happy with the price, quality and speed of the repair.

Depending on how bad it is, you can buy a skeg repair kit to go over the old one. It's kind of like capping a tooth. All the skeg really does is protect the prop and not very well I might add. Of course if it's completely destroyed then you would have it replaced.

skeg repair

The tip of the skeg is broken off, the rest is just pretty brittle due to oxidation. Don't want to put a lot into this outdrive as it may be time to look at replacement. Over 1,700 hours on it.

Thanks,
Bill

If its just the very tip, you may not want to do anything except file it smooth.

John Spooner at Diamond Shine does this work.

I put one on a Volvo penta skeg on a bowrider I owned and it worked as advertised.

Just go on line and order a stainless skeg repair kit. It just goes right over the old skeg. You may just have to file it down a little if it's bent or there are any jagged edges. It won't look pretty but it will work fine. You'll just have to hide your head in shame when taking the boat out of the water.

Not necessarily. I put a Skeggard on a perfectly good skeg to protect it from Winni's notorious rocks and it did it's job when I did make slight contact with one while traversing a narrow area between islands.

John has fixed mine in the past. He did quickly and very reasonably!

I ordered a new TIG welder recently to fix a skeg on an extra bravo 3 drive that I'm building from spare parts, but the welder has not arrived yet. If you can wait, and have trouble finding someone to repair it, ping me. I have plenty of scrap aluminum to use and should be up and running with the TIG before the end of the month.

Skeg Repair

As I mentioned earlier, it was just the tip of the skeg that broke off. I have put the boat in the water, does not seem to have an impact on handling. I will probably leave as is for the summer. Thanks for everyone's input.

Smart move! If it’s just the tip file it smooth when you have a chance and be done with it.

Happy boating!!

Dan
