Strange object in the sky Saturday night
 

Did anyone else see it? Flew over the lake around 7:30 in an easterly direction. Seemed to be illuminated by the sun as it stayed brightly lit through it's travel.
Satellite...Hubble telescope...space station?

If I may suggest your time is a little off, this could certainly be the International Space Station. The link below lists sighting opportunities from Meredith, all visible with the naked eye. I copied part of the list below; the current orbit makes sightings very regular right now. If you want, you can sign up for e-mail alerts when sightings are in your area.

Strange Object in Sky
 

You know, I saw this! The sun gleaming off it caught my eye, and I wondered if I was seeing some jet. But there was no trail, and it just didn't move like a jet.

We saw it too, despite the clouds. But we were watching for it.

From our dock on East Bear Island yesterday, we watched the ISS on its early evening flight over Red Hill to the north until it faded out over Mt. Shaw to the east. 🐻

We use an APP called Sky Guide. it actually sends you notifications right before it flies over and shows you the path. Very cool when you are out by the fire.

I recommend having a look at the guide on the left side of the link below. In short, you'd use the compass directions to figure out what part of the sky to look in, and use the altitude numbers to estimate how far above the horizon the visible range is.

Very easy to distinguish if something is a jet. All aircraft will have flashing lights. The ISS is not only visible with the naked eye, it is the brightest object in the sky and very easy to view. This Sunday is a real good viewing time as the ISS will be pretty high above the horizon(65 degrees with 90 being straight overhead. It is also a pretty long view of 4 minutes. Also Friday the 13th has a great one. Here is one link to check out upcoming viewing. NASA is usually my go to. This one has Manchester plugged in for me.

daytime, too
 

The ISS is so bright, it can also be seen in the daytime when it passes overhead on a clear day. Just most people don't notice it or assume it's a jet. Just check the schedule for an overhead daytime pass and be amazed.

I got the ISS Detector app for my phone ... it is amazing how many and how often things are passing over and more amazing that I've never noticed. My wife is always accusing me of staring off into space...you'd think I would have seen SOMETHING!

I remember seeing the space shuttle pass overhead maybe 15 years ago and was amazed at how bright and how close it seemed. Recently, I went online using the link in one of the first posts and signed up for text alerts (thank you for posting the link). I didn't think I'd actually see the ISS for whatever reason but thought I'd give it a try. The first few attempts were not successful. It was either cloudy or assumed it flew so low in the sky that the trees blocked the view but tonight I was sure I'd have luck. Tonight it was high in the sky (81 degrees, 90 being straight up) and visible for 2 minutes. I convinced all three kids (18 to 13 y.o.) that we were going to see it and sure enough it appeared - exactly where we thought it would at the exact time it was supposed to. We were looking in the right direction at the right angle and were amazed - all of us. It appeared coming over the tree line and disappeared just past overhead. I though it would disappear at the opposite tree line, over the horizon but it was mid sky. VERY cool to see it just fade out and even cooler that my kids enjoyed it as much as I did. I guess we're all still kids when it comes to that kind of stuff. Amazing.

It depends on the relationship of the sun whether you see it the whole horizon to horizon. By that I mean the time it passes because the lower the sun drops behind earth the light shining on the ISS will be blocked by the earth. Which is why there is a big range of visible viewing. I think the longest I have seen it was near 7 minutes with it passing almost directly overhead(90 degrees). That is usually not long after sunset or not long before sunrise.
