Trustworthy Hardware sold

Sad start to the morning seeing Trustworthy Hardware closing tomorrow. Twice a week visitor. Also, no masks required
And on Zillow I saw Beans and Greens is for sale in Gilford. Only stopped once, but must say the zucchini chocolate chip banana bread in fantastic. Local independent business going away. Hate to see it

I had seen trustworthy for sale. There was also an opportunity not just to buy the property but the business also. Anyone know what the new owners are planning? I loved that place so much easier and friendlier than Lowe’s

They had the best nuts 'n bolts selection!

Without interference, such as family tradition, most real estate rises to its highest use.

I will miss them.

The article did say a new hardware store is not out of the question. Would not surprise me if ACE Hardware gets in

Or Aubuchon...

MeredithMan 08-04-2020 08:02 AM

Aubuchon Meredith...

...on a semi-related note, Aubuchon Meredith is blowing out the wall and expanding into the old Olympia Sports space. Good for them....

Lotta memories when I drive by that Trustworthy in Laconia. My father loved that store, and I would always go with him when I was a kid when he needed something. He would even drive down there when he was in his 80's from his place in The Weirs, but it would sometimes take him an hour or more, because, as he used to say, "they've changed the damn roads", which was code for he forgot how to get there and back!

Biggd 08-04-2020 09:25 AM

I think Hardware stores are making a comeback, although larger than what I remember them as.

Just as long as you know how to get there and back!

We'll msis Trustworthy and Beans n Greens. I hope the new owners will run similar businesses. Seemed like Beans n Greens was less busy last timw we were there. Covid? Trustworthy was busy and made a great effort to assist so that customers did not interact with each other very much.

The sign on the marquee today says today August 5 is their last day. So if you’re looking for a bargain on anything I get down there

Stopped by this morning. Said thanks and my goodbyes. No bargains to be had as all the good stuff was sold to the buyer.

Aubuchons in Meredith

AC2717 08-10-2020 08:19 AM

in speaking with them on Monday the 3rd
the new owner is leasing the building to ACE hardware corporate (not a franchiser), and will be a ACE superstore style.

Called it! Have seen it play out twice in Mass over the past few years. Mom and Pop shops being purchased and ACE walks in. Explains no inventory sell off. Should be a fine addition to the area

Mom and pop hardware (might have eventually been an ACE franchise) was replaced by Aubuchon in Bristol (Newfound Lake). It was definitely an upgrade. Nicely stocked, clean, organized, good parking and prices not outrageous. Saved me from lots of longer trips to HomeDepot. No Zucchini chocolate chip banana bread though. Oh and they "request" you wear masks ;)

Same side between DD and T-Bones. They fill propane. Huge propane distribution in back.

ACE corporate will not be leasing the Trustworthy building from the new property owner. It will most likely be an ACE Store owned locally. ACE stores are not franchises but members as ACE is a cooperative that is owned by it`s members.

That is what I said, and I was corrected by a Trustworthy employee, said it was directly with ACE corporate. Just going off what I was told.

gus62 08-10-2020 01:19 PM

No worries. I have more inside information, that`s all.

Winni boaters can access a dock to get to the shop when it opens. It's kinda rickety, but worked fine for our 26 footer.

Facebook photos show a major merchandise renovation or something going on inside the old store?

August 14: ...... free shelves give away ...... a large dumpster was parked at the entrance, yesterday, on Aug 16.

To compete with Lowe's, Home Depot and Walmart, the #1 best sales maker that any retail hardware store can have is a really attractive, well built and provocatively dressed sales lady to help boost up the sales return visits with all the predominantly male customers. In the world of retail hardware, sex definitely helps to move hardware sales. A successful hardware store needs more than just the inventory, it needs high quality, 50-cent coffee and sales ladies who show some skin, and like to flirt.

Hey baby ...... where do they hide the fluorescent light bulbs and duck tape? .......

A sexy young hardware sales girl would be worth her pay, at twice the usual pay rate, what with the increased store traffic, there.

I don't ever recall a sexy clerk in any hardware store or a reason to go.
I'd prefer someone knowledgeable and help me find what I'm looking for so as to save me the most time.
I might be more inclined to go for free home baked goods though.

There are plenty of "sites" around the lakes ;)

Right next door at Amerigas? I thought they filled onsite (as well as trucking to your larger tanks)

fatlazyless 08-20-2020 12:55 PM

Amerigas-Laconia has been closed, door locked, no access, no one there for five months now, due to the coronavirus. To get a propane delivery, you send them an email to www.amerigas.com, America's largest propane company.

Several years ago, Aubuchon-Meredtith offered free, steamed hot dogs on Fridays. I only got there for one of these Fridays. My first thoughts were, yeah, some crappy dog on a soggy bun with the cheapest condiments known to man

NOT SO!!! They had my favorite dogs (Hebrew National)- mustard (spicy brown), and lo-and-behold- Howard's Sweet Relish!!! :D

The menu included the regular green relish/yellow mustard for the country standard dog.

The place was packed!

The Ace by me has free warm popcorn 7 days a week. Always grab a bag when I am in there buying something.

Heaths leased Laconia Trustworthy

They expect to be open by Christmas.

Like the store in Center Harbor, the location at 1084 Union Avenue will carry ACE branded merchandise and cater to the homeowner.

I go to Lowes a lot but quite often found Trustworthy had specialty hardware or things like heating system filter sizes that were not popular. I hope the new store continues to have these things.

WinnisquamZ 10-28-2020 07:15 AM

Hopefully they bring the Ben Moore line with him. He has a fine selection at the Center Harbor. Best in the area.

Yes the full line of Ben Moore paints will be available in the Laconia location. For full disclosure I am the person who runs Heath`s operations and am working on opening the store in Laconia. I have been a member of this forum for 12 years and have always valued the conversations and input provided by the members. Feel free to ask any questions and I`ll do my best to answer them.

Thank you Gus62, if you can, please keep the nuts/bolts/screw isle that Trustworthy had, second to none and had everything in it

While I hate to say it...

The nuts 'n bolts section and correctly made keys are my main purchases.

I realize these don't cover expenses as well as the bigger items but I make up for that with volume. :D

gus62 10-28-2020 08:39 AM

I have had many conversations with Pam from Trustworthy and actually use the same supplier for the nuts and bolts. Although we will be moving the location of those items we have asked the supplier to set us up with the same products and same amount as trustworthy had. As far as keys being made correctly we have opted to advance the technology with keys and will have a system that will make sure the correct blank is used and the machine will cut/match the key automatically with the expectation of eliminating human error. We do understand that Trustworthy was more of a traditional hardware store and are taking steps to keep it that way. Pam is offering advice and recommendations that have helped us understand that market. One thing that we unfortunately can`t match is the fact that they were about the only store that still had products made 40+ years ago (no longer in circulation) stored in the basement for that random person who needed to fix or repairs something that is no longer made. Pam sold all the old inventory to a liquidator out of Maine. Us being an independent owner will always try to get any product a customers asked for as we are not restricted like corporate stores and can use any source we can find to get product.

What makes a good hardware store IS the old stuff. What a mistake.

Not Heaths fault if the old owner kept the vintage inventory and sold it to someone else.

No he`s correct, Prior to us ever even looking at the possibility of putting a store there, Pam from Trustworthy had sold the property to investors and liquidated all inventory to Mardens of Maine. When we started to negotiate with the new property owners the building was empty. While we did not deal with Pam to go there, she has been very helpful to us.
