Grandson found these on the property last week. I can guess what they might be, but not exactly sure...Attachment 14240

Interesting. I had some ideas, but the more I thought about it, the less likely it seemed. What's the history of the land where they were found? Logging, Farming? Type of farm ?

Mark Island...no farming here...my guess was some kind of logging/ tree work tools.

Logging
I thought earlier, not much logging on the islands except to harvest after the hurricane of '38. Now it dawns on me. I suggest these were used to tie logs together to make a log raft and transport the harvest behind a tow boat.

What are these
Descant, you are absolutely right. These probably have very little practical value at this time, but they would be of interest to a local museum.

Hang them on the wall, make an interesting conversation piece!

Perhaps an antique log dog?

Cool find! Now the kid will be scouring the island for more booty!

I would guess it's a logging tool as well, but I would speculate that they might have originally been railroad spikes re-crafted with a little "yankee ingenuity" into these skidding spikes to drag or tow the logs. Without question hand made, note the different number of links on each one. Very cool discovery. |
