New boat on the lake

2 Attachment(s)
Just saw this boat getting ready to be launched. I wish I knew the owners so I could get a ride!!

Salty 06-03-2017 03:24 PM

I think I saw it go by on its trailer in Meredith earlier today.

I saw it go by also. Thats quite a boat for a lake with a speed limit.

New acronym for this style of boat will be GFBQ (Go Fast, Be Quiet). Nobody will pay any attention or complain, because they make little noise. They, therefore, will attract no attention. I just hope they have an up-to-date "MAP" on board!

That boat will attract attention no matter what.

Well it maybe just another low speed trolling setup. Just waiting to have the rod holders and down riggers installed.:rolleye2:

But not "that" kind of attention...;)

DickR 06-03-2017 05:44 PM

When I saw the picture above, I figured it must have been designed by the crew at Cape Canaveral. As the craft accelerates rapidly through and well past 60-80 mph, it undergoes "staging," as the two spent outer engines are jettisoned. Kind of expensive for a boat ride, but whew!

New boat on Lake

It is a beautiful looking craft, but just remember, everything you have to do for your plain old boat, that guy has to do times four. I didn't know there were enough gas docks on the Lake to keep it fueled up! ( guess my jealousy is showing.)

Biggd 06-03-2017 08:26 PM

I think it holds over 400 gallons!

Hillcountry 06-04-2017 07:00 AM

Anyone know the dimensions of that beast? I wonder if it would fit through the Wiers channel abreast of another boat?

To each his own, good for them. Hope they enjoy, I'll certainly enjoy watching it pass me!

At wide open throttle those motors are sucking down about 120 gallons of gas per hour!!😮😮. It definitely needs that 400 gallon tank!!

Probably 8.5 ft beam, same as everybody else that doesn't have a wideload permit.

It looks like an MTI-42V. If so, 450 gallon fuel capacity and 11'6" beam. You couldn't fit 4 outboards like that on a 8'6" beam.

It's just an arbitrary law, it has no bearing on actual boat speeds. People routinely exceed 45 on the lake.

There isn't a car made today that won't easily exceed the highway speed limit by at least 30 MPH. Just because you can drive a 4 cylinder Camry at 110+ MPH does not mean you have to. The Camry will cruise effortlessly at 80.

That boat will probably go <80 MPH, tops. It's big, heavy, wide, and has a lot of drag with 4 lower units in the water. It's clearly not made just for speed, I imagine comfort was a higher priority than speed in the design studio. I bet it'll cruise beautifully at 45 MPH.

The 4 engines look impressive, but it's really a total of "just" 1400 HP (I think, it's hard to see the numbers clearly) on a what appears to be a 40ish foot boat. Mercury makes single engines with more power than that. Here's one that's got 1650 HP: http://www.mercuryracing.com/sterndr...ngines/1650-2/

Yikes, I'd hate to be waiting at the gas docks for this monster to finish fueling and get out of the way. It could take them an hour to fill up from a near empty tank. And $1500+.

Of course when you pay over $1/2 million for the boat, what's $30,000 a year for gas.

It's not really my thing but I'd love to go for a ride in one just for the fun of it. :D

Actually my brother had a 30' Skater with triples on the lake before the instituted the speed limit. We would go out a dawn and blast around at 100+ mph. I would fall asleep in the bulster seat It was awesome and extremely relaxing with the wind in your face with nobody around. Believe it or not those engines are extremely fuel efficient.

Who Cares how fast the boat goes... I am sure it will go over 45, but if the owner, obeys the law what is the problem. My boat will go over 45 and I have no where that much power....

It a nice looking boat, I hope the owners enjoy it and also enjoy the lake...

Stop turning every good looking big boat into a speed limit debate.

I'm not doubting the efficiency but given the specs of this 7 1/2+ ton boat (per the manufacturer) at 40 MPH cruise it gets about 1 mile per gallon. IF the boat was doing the speed limit  it would burn through 45 gals per hour. After 10 hours, it would be sucking vapor. If you were out 5 hours each weekend day you would have to fill up every weekend. It you were running at top speed, and why else would you have this kind of boat, it would burn gas even faster. It may be efficient compared to some similar boats but it's still a LOT of money to keep it fueled and ready to play with.

BUT ... it's not MY money so, have fun!

Thinking further, in every hour you could do a complete back and forth of this 20 mile long lake. In a weekend, 10 times back and forth. I love the lake but it might get a little repetitive. :D

It's basically a show of opulence because there is really no need for a boat like this on this lake.

If we only had what we really "need" life would probably be a bit dull. The property taxes and spending of the opulent people fuel the economy around the lake. If they want to put up a fancy house or drive a spiffy boat to point out they have been successful in life, so what.

I have a 22 foot bow rider. To those who couldn't afford one, they might get by with a skiff and an outboard and think I am showing off. I earned my money but I am not rich and I spend it as I can afford on things that I enjoy. I am sure some people see my car or boat and think "Wow, he must be well off". That's not my intention but I don't care if that's how people perceive it. It's their problem, not mine.

fatlazyless 06-05-2017 09:13 AM

I saw that boat with the four Merc outboards go past at a speed of about 35-mph, yesterday. It looks like a center console complete with an enclosure that was a boat designed by the Egyptian Navy for Queen Cleopatra to cruise up and down the Nile River. What it needs is two go-go dancers permanently positioned on the bow, port and starboard, and two Roman guards, positioned at the stern, port and starboard, and a 3-piece band positioned somewhere else ...... to bring it up to speed .... and make it a very happening boat!

Yes, that's all .....that's what it needs!

Me too.

I like outboards. :)

Most are quiet around the Big Lake. These outboards have submerged exhaust—thank you, Mercury—and won't produce the deafening "blatt" of too many I/Os. :rolleye1:

'Course with thousands of miles to drift in Florida's open Gulfs and ocean, it's always a good thing to have a spare outboard; plus, it won't ruin your entire Lake Winnipesaukee season to have one "in the shop". (Though a spare prop would be a good idea). :look:

OK. Now, with the lake at "high-water", maybe your shoreline hasn't had enough silt eroded from it.

Better? ;)

Enough of your soapbox. A boat like this up on plane (regardless of the speed limit) will put out less of a wake than just putting around.

Pricestavern 06-05-2017 11:21 AM

POW x 4

That's going to be a mighty, mighty big expense if they, being new on the lake, try to blow thru the Witches (or lots of places around the lake in the fall). Could be a windfall for parts-pickers.

Well the thing is I would rather have this boat flying by my shoreline on plane at 40 - 45 MPH, and deal with that wake, then the 30-40 ft cruisers that plow through creating big rollers... Just saying...

Weather I believe he will obey the law or not, is simply my opinion on that mater... Maybe he will maybe he will not, I have no why of really knowing, but I will not condemn him of not obeying the speed limit, until there is proof that he hasn't operated within the limits of the law.

The only practical reason I can think of for having four outboards on the back of that boat is the raw low-end pulling pulling power it ought to provide for, say, yanking a dozen water skiiers out of the water in a ski show. Any other practical reasons?

It obviously wasn't purchased for practicality, I'd say more for ego boosting.

Salt water use at high speed would be the #1 reason to have outboards on a boat. I/Os are not very good in salt water because they are high maintenance and the engines that power them are typically truck derived and made of iron. They also typically remain full of water at rest. You can tilt those outboards out of the water at the end of the day and the engines (which were built to handle raw water cooling from the start) will drain and be completely free of cooling water. Inboards are good in salt water too, but are not meant for really high speeds.

Woodsy 06-05-2017 03:06 PM

Asking about the "practicality" of this boat is like asking about the "practicality" of a Ferrari! Its not in any way shape or form "practical". It can however go from Point A to Point B fairly quickly and safely with a bunch of people on board having a blast!

I just want to know why he went Merc instead of Seven Marine?? You see A LOT of Seven Marine OB's on the high end Poker Runners like the one above!

You know, I see a lot of cars and a lot of homes around the lake that I could say the same thing about. Who Cares? It is not my place to be deciding how others spend their money and time and I can never understand why others seem to feel the need. Could it be that they secretly wish they were in the position to be the guy/woman behind the wheel? If they're not bothering you (and don't prejudge) let it go.

The fact everyone is jealous because they have not is the reason behind the SL law. People are jealous of the GFBL boats of a decade ago. I remember the same folks also want HP and size restrictions of recreational boats. Their theme is 'On Golden Pond' attitude and they are definitely on the wrong lake!

1200 HP will definitely stir the hornet nest once more. Soon you they will ask for HP legislation. And I don't want to go there! I spent countless hours and dollars trying to fight for boaters rights, yet these group of Winni folks went through all kinds of political tactics to get the SL RSA. And they will do it again.

As I quote the SL sponsor: "Sea Rays belong on the seas, .....................".

Dumb Boat

That boat is dumb. Quad engines? On an inland lake with 263 islands, limited open water, and a speed limit? It belongs in Miami.

As far as anyone being jealous, I think the operators of boats like these are usually the jealous ones - jealous that others don't have to ply the glacial waters of Winnipesaukee with 1600 HP to prove their manhood.

1200 HP will definitely stir the hornet nest once more. Soon you they will ask for HP legislation. And I don't want to go there! I love my little tin boat and all 115 horses. I have no jealousy for the 1600hp boat. Some things are just ridiculous. 1600hp on Winnipesaukee is one example. I have no problem with it. In fact I feel a bit sorry for the owner. You seem to be a bit bitter about the speed limit. Please dont project that onto all of us who see the absurdity of that boat on Winni. In fact, if I had to guess, you might be the most jealous?

Why would you feel sorry for someone who has a cool toy and brings it the lake to enjoy?

... Just embarrassing yourself. No haters on this thread. Just folks who recognize silliness and mention it. Anyone who feels the need for 1600 hp on winni is trying to make up for a shortcoming elsewhere in life. I am TOTALLY FINE with that boat having 1600hp or more. But it is also funny. How fast do you get to 45 mph? Given all the weight I bet my boat gets to 40 before his does. You sound upset that other people dont share your envy of stupidity.

No comment on the quad 400's other than I suspect the owner has achieved his goals by this thread. There are 262 islands on the lake not 365.

Lake Winnipesaukee is a beautiful lake that is totally enjoyed by people from all walks of life, and as such, their houses and toys are just as varied. I care less whether they enjoy it in a 14 ft center console or a so- called GFBL boat. If they are enjoying this lake as much as I do, and respect the lake and others who enjoy it, so be it.
Whether it has four engines, two engines, one engine, or some canvas hanging from a mast; if they can get out and enjoy the lake, more power (pardon the pun 😉) to them.

It doesn't take much to figure out that this boat was not bought for primary use on Winnipesaukee, it's just here visiting. People like you deciding what is "silly" or "ridiculous" with limited information, all the while claiming you're "fine" with it are some interesting characters.

As for times to 45 MPH, speed limits, etc, who ever said it was brought here to race, or to push to its maximum potential?

You put your finger right on it. BL=Be Loud. For many of us, being loud, by definition, is not respecting others on the lake.

I have seen the boat docked at a place a couple doors down from Triple H, so that may be where the statement came from. Mr HHH's boat is actually quite modest.

MeredithMan 07-09-2017 10:49 AM

...they also seem very respectful of the lake & rules

I will also add that I have seen the boat come and go from its home a number of times, as well as having passed it while on the lake. I've never seen any reckless behavior, crazy speed, blaring music, or other yahoo antics, that I have witnessed on much smaller, less expensive boats.

Don't really understand why so many people on this site are throwing rocks at someone they don't even know....

Those outboards are not loud by any means. Conversely, there are wakeboard boats that blare their music at 7:00 am, forcing everyone to listen to their style of music. This action is far more annoying than any noise from an outboard motor.

Understood, and I agree. I really appreciate quieter engines, regardless of HP. (I think I commented on that on a similar thread.)

Plus, those wakeboards are really bad for docked boats, the shoreline, phosphorous count, etc

Simply responding to someone else's accusation (that those of us who oppose 1600 HP boats on Winnipesaukee are somehow "jealous"). I can't let such a ridiculous comment go unchallenged. The only thing I'm jealous of is other lakes that have figured out how to maintain the peace and tranquility of God's creation while still enabling the broader community to enjoy access to the water.

It's no different than you slamming the posters on here that are making comments against the need for a 1600HP boat on the lake.

Wow.... gotta love all of the negativity!

So what if somebody has 1600Hp of eggbeaters hanging off the back of his boat? Its not your business! If he can afford the boat/gas/transport etc... good for him!

Lets start slamming all of the big lakefront homeowners too.... I mean why would you ever need a house like that? Cheers to those who can afford those houses!

I saw this boat running during the Easter Seals Poker Run... probably the quietest boat in the crowd. Not to mention it wasn't remotely the fastest!

Its AWESOME to see boats like this coming back to Lake Winni!

Many Winnipesaukee houses are completely ostentatious. Rather than trying to erect something in harmony with the environment and preserve the serene natural beauty of Winni by building something a bit set back, painting it green or brown, and keeping some tree coverage, today it is fashionable to clear cut the trees, build enormous monuments to ourselves, and paint them white or light gray as if to say "Look what I can do!" It is the New Money ethos.

But, to take your analogy a bit further, if Jeff Bezos, or worse some corporation, wanted to spend his fortune by buying ALL the property on Winnipesaukee, demolishing all the homes and businesses, and preserving Winni for his own personal enjoyment do you think something should prevent him from doing so?

My posts are VERY different. I am not slamming anyone posting that suggest there is not a need for a 1600 hp boat on this lake. My issue is with those who suggest that the OWNER of this and other similar boats are personally attacked by some including yourself. No need to slam the owner, if you do not like this type of boat simply state that and do not slam the owner, pretty simple, hope you can comprehend that.

New Hampshire Lake Man posted "jealous that others don't have to ply the glacial waters of Winnipesaukee with 1600 HP to prove their manhood."

I only have a problem with that comment from you. "Prove their manhood", come on man grow up. Simply state that you do not think this type of boat belongs on the lake and not take a cheap shot at the owner.

Woodsy 07-10-2017 10:26 AM

Its YOUR opinion that the lake houses are too ostentatious and not in harmony. If you want a quieter, more restrictive lake go to Squam or one of the less developed lakes.

Lake Winni has a long storied history of large houses, speedboats and big money. The "barn door" has been open on Lake Winni far too long to get the horses back into the barn.

There have been numerous opportunities for the State of NH/lakeside towns to buy up some lakefront/island property and preserve it.... yet no real effort was made. The lake adds too much money to the economy. So if Bezos were to swoop in and try to buy it all up... the State would block the deal. Too much tax $$$ would be lost, not to mention the economic devastation to the area.

The reality is.... that except for island dwellers, nobody NEEDS a boat. They are a luxury item.... So just like a luxury car... there going to be Ferraris, and Lamborghinis driving around with the Chevy's & Fords...

1) Yes, my opinion. I wrote it.
2) I do go to a different lake. My roots are at Winni but I left years ago to get away from the ocean-going vessels and GFBL ridiculousness. But I still love Winni and hold out hope for her future.
3) My question was a philosophical one, not a practical one. I'm curious to know if you think there should be any limits to what people can do on the lake. Philosophically speaking, do you have an objection to extraordinary wealth being used to purchase ALL property, close docks, marinas, etc? SHOULD Bezos be allowed to do that if he chose to?
4) The analogy of luxury cars is problematic because cars are the same size. A better analogy would be allowing monster trucks to drive on 93 at 70 miles an hour. Or, in some cases, a Boeing 787.

Woodsy 07-10-2017 11:14 AM

Like I said.... the State left the Barn door open on Lake Winni along time ago! You cannot re-write history...

The boat in question here is definitely not loud, and I don't think it is very fast... its just big and IMHO pretty.

I have no problem if Bezos or anyone with enough $$$ buys up the lake as long as he/they also pay the money lost from his purchase into the economy annually as well. So all of the people who make their living "on the lake" are not affected. The best part of that would be, despite owning all of the property, the public still would have access.... so all of those boats that you seem to despise would still be on the lake!

Your car analogy is the flawed analogy.... we already have huge 70,000lb trucks driving 70+ MPH on our highways right next to a little 12' long 3500lb Prius! Yet where is the outrage? That poor Prius driver is in grave danger....

You're taking this quite personally so I know which side of the fence your on. To each his own. Thankfully I'm not on Winni, I'm on Waukewan, so I don't have to deal with those issues! Occasionally I will put my boat in Winni during the week when it's not so crazy and dangerous. It's not a safe environment on summer weekends anymore, IMO.

New Hampshire Lake Man 07-10-2017 11:29 AM

Woodsy- I admire your consistency. You have no problem with an individual closing out 95% of access to the lake. I don't agree with you but appreciate the consistent application of your philosophy. :)

Woodsy 07-10-2017 11:45 AM

I didn't say I would be happy about it.... :) But your question was philosophical... it would NEVER happen.

But the real issue is personal rights vs. public rights. Hence my reference to the horse being already out of the barn. IMHO, the lake has too few/little public access points. For example... Laconia does not have a public boat launch, and the only decent state owned launch is in Alton Bay with limited parking.

I also think this big boat ($$$$) vs little boat ($) argument is way overblown. If someone can afford a big $$$ boat good for them. If all someone can afford is a small $ boat... good for them too! Boats are luxury items... very few people NEED a boat. So I don't have much tolerance for a guy with a small boat or lake house whining about a guy with a bigger boat or house. To me it is like the have(s) whining about the have more(s). I happen to fall into the have(s) category. I am blessed enough to live here year 'round in a small condo off the water in the Weirs, and a smaller (26') boat.

I've been on the lake for 40 some odd years now and have seen all the changes first hand. Some are very good and some are very bad. I'm glad I'm off on a smaller lake close by now. I can still experience all the good and avoid all the bad.

Woodsy 07-10-2017 12:21 PM

the funny part is..... I really do not see much "bad". I see big slow cruisers, go fast's, runabouts, jet skis etc all out enjoying this wonderful resource.

People say its crazy out there.... and don't get me wrong, there are way more boats this year. probably the most boats on the lake since the real estate crash.

Despite this... the reality is we have very, very few boat collisions of any sort.

I attribute this mostly to the 150' rule.... although distance on the water is hard to judge, and everybody thinks the "other guy" comes too close, causing all sorts of butthurt on the lake. The accident stats show that NH/Lake Winnipesaukee is very safe to boat on.

I guess we just view the area through a different set of goggles. I've always come to the NH lakes region to get away from the stress of traffic and congestion of Ma. but it is slowly creeping it's way up here on the roads and now on the lake.

I really don't know where this idea that people are "whining" about the "haves" comes from, or that there is some element of jealousy at play. I don't like those boats and houses so why would I want one? I don't begrudge anyone their "success." For example, have you ever seen anyone complain about the beautiful mahogany Chris Crafts, Lymans, Gar-Woods, Hacker-Crafts of a bygone era? The best examples of those are often as expensive, if not more, than your average ocean-going behemoth or GFBL boat that can be found on Winnipesaukee. No one complains about them because they're beautiful and in keeping with the lake and its history. But the huge wakes and noise that the GFBL boats produce (not to mention speakers on wakeboard towers) destroy others' enjoyment. Those houses that clear 100' of trees so that they can have a view (or more likely so others' can view their house from the water) destroy the landscape for all of us. So I like to call people on it.

Woodsy 07-10-2017 01:04 PM

Its your choice how YOU spend your money.... but your choice should not be forced upon someone else. Because YOU don't like certain boats they should not be allowed? Because YOU don't like certain houses they should not be allowed either? Certainly sounds like a me me me attitude. How someone spends their money is not my concern as long as it is within the law. It is THEIR choice on how THEY want to spend THIER money. If someone wants and can afford an big house or a big boat... good for them!

That being said... all of the older hackercrafts/garwoods/etc have open (un-muffled) exhaust. They get a pass because they are few in number... if they were greater in number, no doubt there would be lots of noise/speed complaints.

Lake Winnipesaukee is owned by the people of NH. Although it is not a State Park in a formal manner... It is for all practical intents and purposes a State Park... thus it is subject to all sorts of uses by the public.

Nowhere is it written that anyone has the right to peace and quiet.... So ski/wakeboard or pontoon boats with their speakers booming, Go fast boats with legal exhaust, jet skis with their motor whine etc are all legally permitted uses in the lake.

Woodsy
