So as I'm sitting on my deck sipping wine after a long day at work, a thought crossed my mind...how did all of you out there choose your forum names. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where mine comes from, but I was just curious...

When I was a very young kid (5/6 years old) living in the city, on very hot summer days all of us would take off our shirts to try and get cool and would declare we were "tummymen"...so I became a 'tummyman here !

Our 1976 Slickcraft SS 235 was the family boat for 38 years. When we bought the Eastern, Dave Ewing sold the old boat for us and it then changed hands 2 0r 3 times. It now has a new owner who named it "The Spirit of 76" and it lives in Smith Cove.

This is a photo from when we owned the SS 235.

chachee52 06-05-2022 07:34 AM

Nick name I got while Working at Jackson Star, one of my co-workers could never remember my real name so he came up with Chachee and it stuck, and 52 is my favorite number, 10 more than the "ultimate answer to the ultimate question of the universe". Don't know why ten more was an important part, but that stuck too.

upthesaukee 06-05-2022 07:36 AM

Coming up since 1946.

I was born in 1946, and that summer, my folks and I spent our vacation at Lake Shore Park at mom's uncle's place, the Wee Hoose. As I got old enough to talk, I had trouble saying Winnipesaukee, so I would ask if we were going 'Upthesaukee. Through the years, it became synonymous with coming up to the lake.

When we moved to NH in 1996 and moved in with Mom, within a day or two, she said "you don't have to go 'Upthesaukee, you live here now. "

Mom passed away in 2000 and when I joined the Forum a few years later, I could think of no better username than Upthesaukee.

It's now been 76 years and two boats later, and I'm still Upthesaukee!

Dave

Monday, June 6, 6:28-am; so The Dive has been spuds down at this Camp Lawrence, south Bear Island, forested shoreline since mid-day Friday, about 3-pm on June 3.

How long will it be there/here? Has The Dive enrolled itself as a summer camper for summer-2022 at https://camp.mvymca.org/camp-lawrence/ ..... :)

What a a wonderful and beautiful and fulfilling place to spend its' Dive summer on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Could The Dive become a long term Camp Lawrence camper, and return year after year, and always look forward to returning to this south Bear Island summer camp?

Hey there steve-on-mark ...... maybe you'll be wanting to change your name to steve-at-the-dive ..... :D ...... just looky here, what done did move on into this here neighborhood ovah the weekend?

You know I can see it very well from my little cottage on Meredith neck, and it really has some excellent visibility with that afternoon sun and setting sun shining down on that big white Dive box barge and the natural green forested shoreline, over there. Such an excellent location! Me-thinks it can be very comfy, there ...... a new home for The Dive?

Mine is a little convoluted as well. I own a 2000 Four Winns Horizon. It has the “Captains Call” exhaust which is a feature where I can turn my obnoxious loud exhaust on and off. (It wasn’t obnoxious 22 years ago…) The 1983 movie Blue Thunder starring Roy Scheider (Jaws) was about a fictitious Metropolitan Police Department that used a state of the art helicopter. It had a feature called “whisper mode” so it could fly in close undetected. I had a 33 year career in Law Enforcement and my boat is blue…..so…..Blue Thunder it is!

I guess I could’ve just said it’s the name of my boat but what fun would that be?

Poor Richard 06-07-2022 01:31 PM

Poor Richard comes from a couple things...

The short version is, it's a euphemism of sorts and it also happens to be the name of the font I use for my company.

The company font aside, the longer PG-13 version is:

On another forum, in the for sale section there were always a few members lowballing or, my favorite, "I'll have the cash in 2 weeks, can you hold it for me?" When in actuality these individuals never seemed to make a purchase on anything ever........ever.

From that, the term "brokedick" was eventually the label those select few had to live with and me being me, I found that to be exceptionally entertaining because of how it played out on that forum....that and it was simply the perfect description for these folks.

Anyway, as I was signing up to this forum, I wanted to use something different than the name I generally use and so I drew inspiration from the company font, had a chuckle and went with it. :D

I am old enough to remember when the Merc Cougar came out in '67 however many here likely never heard of the car.

I was afraid of that too.I’m glad you posed the question because
back in the 1960s, when I was given that nickname, the definition of cougar was only an animal, not how we think of the name now. I’m glad I had a chance to prove myself because I am anything but.😇

LOL- I had to call up my son first and ask him what an avatar is! Being able to post on this forum is about my highest level of computer ability.

If someone would like to find a picture and surreptitiously put me in it with the Cougar, that would be fine with me.

Steve, This is a fun post.

I totally agree!

XINGU – are you a member of that tribe in Brazil, if you are, please post a picture.
Or did you take a vacation and paddle down the XINGU river?
Inquiring minds want to know.

His avatar is a clue I think

Indeed—a photo of Edith Wharton, writer of my favorite short story "Xingu."

For the literature lovers, give it a go—I think you'll find that it reads swimmingly yet is sometimes hard to fathom.

"Bear Islander" was already taken.
The avatar is a deep cut from the Dilbert nerdiverse, a nod to the webmaster's avatar.

This was a great idea for a thread! Fun to hear how everyone go their names. I hope to see all you guys out on the lake this summer, would be great to revive a forum meet up of some kind and share a few laughs and a few cold beverages!

Dave

I grew up on the NH/ Maine border, and a lot of folks use Upta Camp..." Are you going Upta camp this weekend"? Back then, any structure on the lake, no matter the size, was called a camp

I spent 8 weeks every summer from 1961-1973 @Camp Bernadette on Lake Wentworth. 10 years as a camper, 3 on staff. It was the best 8 weeks of the year!

Speaking of names….does anyone know what happened to “ishoot”? He was a regular poster, and his comments were very interesting and helpful….and poof! He abandoned ship…..he is missed.

I do...I think he got fed up with the animosity and negativity and decided a breather was needed. See him every now and then at the Glendale docks...he left this on my boat when I came back in the spring!
