Best Ice Cream on the Lake

My family loves ice cream and think Liliuokalani's is the best on the lake without question. Their ice cream is delicious, they never skimp on toppings (a pet peeve of mine), the price is right, and the view is awesome. Kellerhaus (make-your-own sundae) and Red Hill Dari (peanut butter parfait) are tied for second. Dewey's comes in (a distant) third.

Your thoughts?

Jordan's Creamery 🍦 🍨

As discussed on earlier threads, we visit Jordan's located on Route 106 in Belmont. We buy buckets of ice cream to take out to our guests on East Bear Island. Sadly, this year, our pups may be our only guests. 🐻

Yes Jordan’s on 106 is our favorite. They have had a small stand at Fun Spot in the past, never tried that.

Sandwich Creamery

I think they have the best ice cream in the area, but Jordan's have far better varieties. Jordan's Maple Walnut uses local Maple products!

Agreed.
Jordans's is the best. I was very disappointed when they closed the one next to Funspot.

Meredith Town docs, distant second.

While Jordan's is great, I believe it is not on the lake.

Lilli's (I can't spell, or say, their full name) is my favorite.

I could be wrong about this, but I believe last year the ice cream at Funspot was already turned over to another vendor, not Jordan's. Richardson's maybe?

It's Lili'uokalani

Just how a shop in Laconia, NH, got named for a Hawaiian Queen* is a great puzzlement to me.

(*Hawaii's last monarch).

Happy Cow...they have more interesting flavors than Jordan's, quick service, and staff are always happy. They have sugar cones, waffle cones, and wafer cones. However, they are all out of pine cones.

1. Ice cream is always too hard—they must keep it stored at too low a temp.
2. Toppings always skimpy.
3. Price vs. quantity ratio among the low end.

They've got a pretty good location, though, which is worth putting up with above.

That being said, upon further reflection, I'd put Bailey's Bubble in the top three and move Dewey's to four.

You’re definitely correct, last year at fun spot it was Richardson’s. Jordan’s was only open for one season there. That being said in my opinion their ice cream is the best in the region. Eye opener is a must try ( when they have it)

Last year, Funspot took it over and served Richardson's ice cream instead of Jordan's. Richardson's is okay but isn't even close to Jordan's. I really miss Jordan's at Funspot but we still make the trip to Belmont every now and then.

Ice cream stands are no different than any other small business hoping people will get out, so stop with the "have and have-not" preaching.

So your saying that Jordan's does not make their own ice cream as they advertise??

Hard to believe...

Edited to add: Didn't think your post was true.... https://www.laconiadailysun.com/news...4fc80c7ae.html

"Jordan begins making ice cream around nine o'clock each morning and finishes about seven o'clock every evening seven days a week. "Those two machines are running constantly," he said. He estimated that over the course of the season, between April and Columbus Day, he produces some 45,000 gallons in more than 200 different flavors. Jordan's also makes ice cream cakes and pies, low-fat and non-fat yogurts as well as sugar-free ice cream, sorbet and soft-serve in a variety of flavors."

Best ice cream on the Lake

I have to be honest, to me there is really no such thing as "bad" ice cream, some is marginally netter than others, but ALL ice cream is "the best", with anything else a distant second place. I think people get used to the ice cream where they usually go, and this may include convenience, price, the ice cream scoopers, or what ever, so trying to rank ice cream places is very difficult. But, all that having been said, I try to go to Bly Farm (Rt 28 in Wolfeboro) when ever I am passing by.

ANOTHER place to try!

I agree on the "bad," but there are certainly shops that are less enjoyable, interesting, etc.

Liliuokalani's has 1. Awesome ice cream, 2. Great service, 3. Plenty of toppings/value, AND great scenery. It's a win-win-win whereas other places may have great ice cream but criminal prices, etc.

Does anyone have a "ridiculous" option? Like Hodgies in Amesbury, which serves HUGE portions, or Kellerhaus's 5-scoop sundae?

My wife's "Mudslide" at Liliuokalani's was absurdly big (AND delicious) and, at $6 or so, a bargain!

Facts. The main determining factor in good ice cream is proper handling. If it's allowed to get too soft or dried out or ice falls in it the best can be ruined.

I wish more places would take the money and make change before handing over the cone, so much easier.

Having said all that, can not disagree with Liliuokalani's but being a center harbor guy Dewey gets most of my business.

Will admit to going to sawyers 2-3 times a year but strictly for the odd ball flavors. I'm probably the only person under 70 who likes frozen pudding or grapenut.

The first year Jordans, (I’m talking about the location by fun spot) was open they had Jordan’s ice cream, they could not produce enough ice cream for the fun spot location so now it is strictly Richardson’s ice cream, which they outsource from Massachusetts. Call and ask them, it’s a fact. A lot of establishments up here use them and do not disclose unless asked.

We’ve had many inquiries over the recent weeks as to when we are opening our funspot location for the season. We have decided to sell our portion of that location to the good people at Funspot. Despite the business growing, it was becoming very difficult to keep up with production demands. Staffing was also beginning to be a real challenge that we didn’t foresee getting better with time. The people at Funspot were absolutely tremendous to work with and we’re sure they will do a great job going forward. They intend to keep it an ice cream shop under a different name and with a different product. We are sure they will do a great job with it! We are thrilled to have put personal happiness over professional revenue. See you at our Belmont location this summer and every summer for another 25 years!

Dan,
I can't find that quote anywhere above?
What WinniFam posted (albeit oddly worded) was that the first year the ice cream place at Funspot was open it was run by Jordan's with their homemade ice cream.
After that year, as the above Facebook post from Jordan's clarifies, the ice cream place at Funspot was run by a different shop and used Richardson's ice cream.
At least, that's the way I took it.

Better check your facts. I know they make their own ice cream. The only one I know of that claims to make their own ice cream and do not is Sawyers. I happen to be out back one day when I saw a delivery of Gifford ice cream. The side of the carton clearly spells Gifford.

Interesting—I just checked their site, and they clearly claim to be self-made. Is it possible that they were just supplementing at the time?

Ice cream by boat

So what's the best - or even a list of places - ice cream that is easily accessible by boat? A little walk is fine. I tend to rule out anything in Meredith (at least on the weekend) as docking is an issue. Kellerhaus is a must multiple times a year (by car, or course!) both because of the make your own sundae and the long standing tradition. Dewey's and and Red Hill Dari tend to be my go to places by boat - but am always interested in other spots.

gus62 05-28-2020 08:06 AM

My belief as to the connection with several of the local ice cream shops is that they do use Richardson`s Ice Cream mix/base when making their own ice cream. Dewey`s, Skelly`s, Bailly`s Bubble to name a few.

Pier 19 for close to Moultonborough, Bailey's Bubble in Wolfeboro, Stillwell's in Alton Bay (I HAD been there, but was confused in the above comment), Liliuokalani's in Paugus Bay, Town Docks in Meredith, Dewey's in Center Harbor.

Those are my pics for the best at each port.

I agree with that. Back in the day, Weeks Dairy supplied base to many places that "made their own". I recall hearing that in the early days they even supplied Ben & Jerry's.

Without knowing details, I'd guess that Sawyer's used to "make their own" and said so on the website, but perhaps the web site was not updated fully when the business sold? It is also possible that Gifford's contracts to make ice cream to Sawyer's specifications, so it may "really" be Sawyers.

I've never seen anybody unhappy when eating ice cream, so I draw the conclusion that ice cream is medicinal: it cures depression.

true story, I worked at Weeks then. Ben & Jerrys were buying something like 1500 gallons of mix per week originally.

it's not really practical for a small shop to make ice cream from scratch, so the ones that do "make it" buy mix, flavor it and freeze on site. It can be better or worse, like all things depending on the equipment and the operator skill.

before Weeks I worked for Barney's and we had a few customers that demanded we deliver in an unmarked truck. The old Bailey's in wolfboro, tamarack and a few others I forget now.

The owner is great. I've seen his posts on the iBoat Facebook page and think I might have had his daughter as a student many years ago—I keep forgetting to ask him.

Glad you enjoyed it!

I did not mention the forum...

We have been there a few times in the past but always by car. It’s always been good with good service and never a complaint! This was the first time I went by boat as channel traffic and docking wasn’t bad On a Friday. We will go back by boat but only during the week.

Damn, son, it’s not Siberia. We were at Arcadia for a year and never let that stop us from going everywhere on the lake. Second day living there, we went to Alton Bay.

Naw, girl...we go everywhere.

But because we're limited to a 20' vessel and because that end of the lake is literally the opposite side and often a washing machine, we don't get there much.

Went to Jordans last night.
The place was PACKED....
Ice Cream was delicious.

First time this year..
You stay in your car and they bring the ice cream to you.
Just like the classic carhop service.

If you go, tip the kids well.

Anyone try Ice Out Scoops yet?! We were jonesin' for ice cream last night and almost went out to Kellerhaus, but my disinclination to drive interfered. I'm confident we would've tried IOS if we'd thought of it!

Wolfeboro town docks has soft serve and its very good! Because of Covid19, they are putting the ice cream in a cone and then turn it over in a cup. When I asked why they said less human touch doing it this way...??? :rolleye2::rolleye2: Really? Anyway, the ice cream was good...

Shibley's Drive In. Alton Bay has soft serve. Not my thing at all so I never tried it.

Dairy Queen is not Ice Cream.
https://www.eatthis.com/dairy-queen-ice-cream/

"Technically, our soft serve does not qualify to be called ice cream," the Dairy Queen site fesses up.

We tried it last week. It was good, they serve Gifford's ice cream.

thinkxingu 06-14-2020 06:39 PM

Finally got to Ice Out Scoops tonight. Ice cream is ok, and they don't have peanut butter OR marshmallow sauces (the HORROR!), but it's a peaceful little setting (overlooking the traffic, which wasn't terrible tonight) with a great tree to climb for the kids. The price was very reasonable, and the workers were kind and playful with my kids.

If they can get those sauces in, and a couple other ice cream flavors, it'll be a nice little local option.

Happy ice creams, all!

Hold up, hold up...maybe Bailey's Bubble is the best. Just got a Fluffernutter and it was DIVINE. Excellent ice cream, just the right amount of sauces—distributed correctly—and $5! Cha-CHING!!!

Tell me what makes this place so special—and, please, not just "their ice cream is good." Serving size, flavors, special offerings...?

PS We hit up Kellerhaus last night, and I like their banana boat because I can get a few different flavors of ice cream. No peanut butter sauce, though. [emoji3525]

Well for me it’s all about the ice cream itself! It is 100% completely homemade on site in Belmont. There is none creamier that I have found! The serving sizes are excellent, many flavors to choose from and as far special offerings like sauces, that’s not my thing as it just ruins the flavor of the natural ice cream...Give me a waffle cone filled with their black raspberry and nothing could be better!!

Enjoy!

I used to get just that: black raspberry in a waffle cone with chocolate sprinkles. I've grown up, though, and appreciate texture and nuance.

*think + xingu.

I started this thread, so it makes perfect sense I'd be involved in it, yes?!

As to my cholesterol, it is perfect—as is my sugar. I get ice cream once a week but eat (mostly) well the rest of the time and exercise every day!

You know what they say*: "an ice cream a week is a fun way to hang with family and create new traditions at the lake!"

* No one says this.

My Dearest ishoot308*,
Last evening, on the most American of holidays, my family and friends journeyed to the Wolfeboro town docks. Upon seeing the line at Bailey's Bubble, I remembered your advocacy on behalf of Dockside, so we gave it a go as there was no line and B'sB was significant.
As someone above noted, ice cream is always good, but I reject your thesis that Dockside is #2 in the area. I respect you very much, but your taste in ice cream shops is suspect and very much in question.
Though the servers were exceptionally friendly and the prices reasonable, the sundaes were ill-constructed. I am unsure whether I would make the same decision in the future were the circumstances similar, but given equal lines, Bailey's Bubble is the clear winner.
I hope to someday resolve our differences and put all this past us.

My Very Best,

thinkxingu

* The above silliness comes courtesy of a quiet house, the result of the wife and kids sleeping in after a late night of boating, fireworks, and sub-par ice cream sundaes.

Think,

As I have stated in a previous ice cream post, I am only into the ice cream itself. All those chemical sauces, jimmies, sprinkles or whatever we’re supposed to be calling them this week, I don’t care for and feel it detracts from the natural flavor of the ice cream. And with that said I stand by my selection in this post called “Best Ice Cream On The Lake” not sauces and fluff fluff....:D:D

Dan the ice cream man!

Agree! IMHO all that sauce and sprinkles stuff is just a cover up for 2nd rate ice cream:D

TheTimeTraveler 07-05-2020 09:27 AM

I was at Bailey's Bubble on Friday, July 3rd, and was quite surprised to see Blueberry and Strawberry available as a soft serve flavor! So I tried it out and thought it was just fine. Never seen that flavor before as a soft serve.

Bailey's Bubble runs a soft serve "Flavor of the Day" and last year tried their Coffee flavor, and also their Black Raspberry flavor. Both were also excellent.

I think Coffee is my favorite soft serve flavor but I find it almost impossible to find as a soft serve, so I will always grab it anywhere if I ever see it.

Am curious to read about other unusual soft serve flavors, and where they are obtainable.

The same can be said for people that put ketchup on a thick, well marbled, sirloin strip!
However, that’s a subject for a different thread! ;)

thinkxingu 07-05-2020 09:55 AM

I LOVE how passionate this discussion is. ICE CREAM IS NO JOKE.

PS For those who don't know, Dan extended an offer to take my son and me fishing last year, and we had a GREAT time together—he's a class act, as are almost all people I've encountered through my time on the lake—and our needling each other is purely in jest.

My family and I will definitely be taking a side trip home soon to check out Jordan's. I will report when we do.

Years ago I really enjoyed getting a cone at Sawyers: butter pecan usually.

I thought it was great.

It's been awhile since I stopped in there: do they still have good, home-made ice cream?

FlyingScot 07-06-2020 11:35 AM

Think/Dan--I appreciate the divide. I'm a long-time Bailey's Bubble lover--a big fan of the scene, their kid's size sundaes, and the ability to walk over to the lake while eating. But last week I made the crucial error of ordering a kid's size dish (my body is a temple) instead of the usual sundae. Meh--it was really so mediocre I was wondering why I bought it at all. So it's definitely the toppings...and I'll be looking for Dan at Dockside for my next ice cream

Lol!...and I just returned from Baileys Bubble!! Had my usual taste testing “cone o Black raspberry” and must say it was excellent as was everyone else’s who came with me...

Enjoy!
