Good-bye

I am leaving this forum....
It makes me sad, but I don't seem to be learning much, and I find it more upsetting than entertaining.

Woodsy 10-09-2014 03:16 PM

I am sorry to hear that.... I know the posts over in the lake issues section can be contentious, but that's no reason to leave. Not everything is sunshine and roses and people will disagree. It is what it is.

I am sorry to see you leave...

Woodsy

MGWillia 10-09-2014 03:19 PM

Really Sorry to Hear This.

I've enjoyed this forum so far (yeah, I'm pretty new). It took me a bit to come to realize that the "Issues" section can be a little like the old west. I'm a big Bill of Rights kinda guy. I enjoy nothing more than a lively debate (After working 16 years in the White House, I'm really fond of the political ones too!) I'm sorry that things may have gotten personal. I'm also sorry that you feel your best recourse is to leave. I've enjoyed your contribution to a variety of threads. I think it is the fourms loss when any voice is silenced. Free voice is important, but so is free will. So if you do leave, you will be missed. Hope you will change your mind, but it's yours to change.... Thanks for all your inputs.

Nagigator 10-09-2014 03:20 PM

I'm sad too...........

Sorry to see you go.....I really enjoy this forum, the photos posted alone make it worthwhile.............. Maybe some of the members can persuade you to change your mind.

jrc 10-09-2014 03:24 PM

Sorry to see you go!

There is way more good than bad on this forum. Even during the worst of the bad times, only a few people got really crazy. The owner and moderator of this website does a great job of keeping things on track. Actually I'm sure there is a lot of dirt he hid from us.

The dungeon was a compromise between killing certain subjects altogether or cluttering up the whole forum with those topics. It still works when those subjects come back.

Remember it's fall we're all grumpy about putting our boats away...

Rusty 10-09-2014 03:32 PM

I'll bet that if I said I was leaving, there wouldn't be enough room on one page for all the thanks I would get.:D

That's why I stick around. ;)

BroadHopper 10-09-2014 03:40 PM

Like Life

The Forum has its ups and downs. Currently everyone is in the Fall mood, boats and camps put up for the winter. It will spring back next year after ice is out and everyone is enjoying the lake.

Don't take it too hard. The forum is the only 'pulse' of the Lakes Region that I know of. There was a couple of other forums but they were shut down by a handful of people. Our webmaster does a good job of keeping the threads under control.

You could join a lively group on Facebook 'I boat on Lake Winnipesaukee' if that will fit your niche.

See you on Chase Island!

JasonG 10-09-2014 04:00 PM

Don't leave. Just come back once in a while. We will all be here. :)

This forum is like a hidden nook. Good info, good people, a bit laid back, and not crowded like weirs beach on Jul 4th.

Newbiesaukee 10-09-2014 04:19 PM

This is a well run, well moderated Forum with generally both helpful and reasonable people. I ignore the stuff I don't like, concentrate on what interests or is important to me and get a lot of just plain useful information .

Compared to what is out there on the Internet...this forum is all sweetness and light.

My life is much better with it than without it.

HellRaZoR004 10-09-2014 04:56 PM

Isn't this really a little over dramatic?

Why base your decision on a few exchanges between members when there are plenty of very informative and useful threads from the past and discussions still to be had?

It's your decision to leave but wouldn't it be more beneficial if you just ignore the threads you don't agree with and engage in conversation with the ones you do?

Rich 10-09-2014 05:02 PM

Sorry to see you leave... I can say that takes the right type of person to understand the mentality of an internet forum such as this, and a lot of people don't understand this, and may have their own reasons for joining the forum.

Not that I have a good mentality :D but I've been playing with 'forums' similar to this since before the internet (anyone remember the old dial up BBSs?) and have long learned that it can take a thick skin to get to the point where you can enjoy it, even if someone is not agreeing with you.

In fact, I know that for every person that registers for the forum, only a small portion of those even participate. Not to mention that probably with a 10 to 1 (or possibly even a 100 to 1) ratio, more people will read the forum than will ever even register (I know this as I've created/run many forums over the years). So it takes a certain someone to even get to the point to make a post.

So you have to take everything with a grain of salt, and realize that everyone will have their own opinion (or two), and almost no one may agree with your thoughts or beliefs.

If you enjoy parts of the forum, then remain, using only those parts. If you make some friends, good for you! But realize everyone here isn't a 'friend' but some may be friendlier than others. On the other hand, every once in a while, you may make a great friend, but as it is in 'real life' (as they say), this can be a rare happening and should be appreciated as such when it does occur.

I find this forum well run, and it mostly has a great bunch of people (actually I can't think of one bad one at the moment, but that can change after one post).

You can't let a forum such as this one make you lose sleep, get a headache, or have a drink (but you can drink while on the forum)! It's more like hanging out at a local coffee shop, where you know of most of the regulars, but you don't nessesarily agree with their political direction, ethics, religious beliefs, morals, nor even their choice of a cup of coffee.

With that said, I hope we see you again! :)

tis 10-09-2014 05:30 PM

Chaselady, you shouldn't leave. As Newbie said, just ignore what you don't like, don't read the threads that offend you. Any thread that has the speed limit or performance boats discussed is going to be divisive most likely, so just don't read them. Remember if you let someone drive you off the forum, they win.

You posted at 4:07 that you were leaving but I notice that your last activity was 5:11. My guess is you can't leave since you are addicted like the rest of us!

dave603 10-09-2014 06:25 PM

Chaselady

As with all types of online forums there are good and bad.

I think you are making a mistake and you will regret it later and I hope you come back later. Maybe give it some time and you may miss it.

I'm not sure what you had hoped to learn here, but it is a great forum for the area.

TiltonBB 10-09-2014 06:29 PM

Don't leave

As others have said, the forum, and the website, are well run and very informative.

I check in often and find out many things that I didn't know about the lake, restaurants, and area attractions.

If you are addicted to the lake (as most of us are) there is so much to learn here and add to your knowledge and increase your enjoyment of the lake and the surrounding area.

Are there subjects you are not interested in? Sure. So skip over them. Are opinions expressed here that may not agree with yours? Sure. That is how it is in life. Enjoy what interests you. Look at the pictures in the gallery. Read about the history of the lake. There is a lot of great and entertaining information here.

I believe that for most of us this website increases our feeling of being "connected" to the lake even when we are not in the area. Keeping up with what is going on on Winnipesaukee is important to everyone who has an interest in the lake.

I cannot imagine suddenly becoming uninterested.

I'll be the first to say I wish there was more traffic here. But given the fact that the site is Winnipesaukee.com, it pretty much is going to get all the traffic it can. Kudos to the webmaster.

mcdude 10-10-2014 05:15 AM

For what it's worth, if you find someone's posts particularly annoying simply ban them. Works great. go up to "User CP", then under "settings and options" click on "edit ignore list". Simply add the name of the offensive poster and their posts will disappear from your feed. Works like a charm and you don't have to read through their drivel.

Wow, just look through the thread on fall photography.......such a huge upper ! In any large group of people you're going to find all kinds of personalities and people that say cranky or dopey things once in a while. That's life. Pretty funny,SIKSKR....guess those performance boaters won't have Chaselady to kick around any more.

SIKSUKR 10-15-2014 12:59 PM

She had some good posts and did some very noble things for boaters. People have different opinions on certain issues and I have to overlook those as well.

Its like I said before, "she took her ball and went home" She didn't agree with everyone here, some people get mean spirited, some nasty, etc. But thats what a forum is. A chance for people to voice "their" opinions. It would be a pretty boring place to come if we all shared the same opinion and agreed on every topic (speed limit). Don would be out of a job as moderator. So as much as we hate to see someone leave, She is now looking out her window with her ball in her hand watching all the kids playing outside deciding when the right time to come back out and play.....although I thought it was kind of odd that she announced she was leaving...why not just leave....maybe to start a new thread where people share their opinions??

Happy Gourmand 10-30-2014 09:10 AM

I agree, I think its creepy that people are checking when she is logging in.

I say give Chaselady her space and lets hope she returns. She was a pretty nice person if you ask me and a productive member of this forum. Right or wrong, she went out her way to help fellow boaters. I wish more people in the world were like her...

Come back when your ready Chaselady!

Dan

MGWillia 10-30-2014 09:58 AM

Just leave her be

There is no crime in just reading the posts and keeping up on what's happening. If she doesn't feel she wants to participate in the discussions (be that because she doesn't want to feel attacked, or for whatever reason)then at least she is still here. When and if she feels like it, I for one, hope she joins back in. Looking at the TONS of members this forum has and realizing that I see mostly the same 20 or so names posting each week, I think we have LOTS of folks who just check in and read.. No Crime. No Foul. Just let it go. IMHO

glennsteely 10-30-2014 05:25 PM

I agree....

But people aren't supposed to get mean-spirited or nasty in THIS forum. They agree to that when join as opposed to being a guest. And by being nasty, those people made Chaselady feel like she couldn't voice "her" opinions.

true but, people aren't supposed to jump off the black cat bridge, but they do. that doesn't mean I won't drive over or under it. I don't agree with being mean spirited here but its going to happen. There are some controversial subjects in any forum and some have a very defensive stance on their opinion, sure there is a better way to make a point sometimes. I enjoy reading all views on a subject and if someone wants to disagree with my opinion, I'm not going to leave (and announce that I am leaving)

It's amazing when people want to abandon this forum entirely because of one little thing they don't like. In this case because I wasn't quite fast enough removing a political thread that was posted last night. I get accused of bias when I just fell asleep early:

MAXUM 11-04-2014 11:21 AM

I suppose I'll chime in even though I swore I wouldn't comment on this tread. Like it or not here's my two cents.

1: This is a FOURUM which by definition means the following: a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged. How the heck can ideas or issues be exchanged when there are those who are so easily "offended" either by someone who shares an idea they don't agree with or discusses subject matter they don't like results in the request to squash said conversation? I'm sorry but in all honesty, grow a pair. I have more respect for somebody who I disagree with but has the fortitude to say what they think, throw it out there and stand behind it versus attempts to filter/control the conversation from a particular point of view.

2: Don - you have a tough job here and I have been a long time member here and since the early days I think you have been fair in moderating this forum and keeping it as even keeled as possible. For those comments you posted, not surprised in the least but at the same time if some members feel that way good riddance to them, let them go throw their little temper tantrums and bring that childish language elsewhere. I personally want to once again thank you for providing a forum for those of us to enjoy.

3: While some may disagree, the discussion of political matters and even specific candidates I think is fair game on this forum within reason. I don't support all out endorsements of any candidate even though I myself have my own point of view on certain matters. However pointing out various political views of such candidates and what they have supported does have a direct impact on the area, the lake and those with a vested interest around the lake such as property owners. As with past discussions over certain pieces of legislation dare I mention the speed limit debate, it is relevant to the lake in that these pieces of legislation don't just magically appear, they are authored and submitted by our elected officials. Therefore discussions about candidates up for election should be had provided that the conversation remain civil. We all have our points of view and regardless of political ideology, allowing these to play out isn't a bad thing. In fact I typically find these conversations engaging so long as they remain substantive.

4: I agree there is absolutely no excuse for any kind of personal attacks or insults and any screening of and removal of such posts is warranted.

Finally, oh the drama! For the weak minded, or those that are easily offended, maybe an open forum like this is not the place for you. For the rest of us that regularly participate and exchange our thoughts and opinions, hats off to you all I enjoy the conversation. Keep it up - it keeps this forum not only interesting but at times educational.

Speaking of voicing your opinion, today is election day, get out and vote!

Cheers to you all!

Don,

You do more then most anyone else would at trying to keep this forum civil. Thank-you for that.

To All,

I am a little surprised at this thread. For someone to look and see if another member is still logging on... that is a bit to much.

Chaselady had here reasons for making this post, and having gone silent. And I for one support her in that right. I myself have taken breaks from this forum. For a variety of reasons. At times because I felt I have been in the wrong, at times because I felt I was being attacked, and well at times, because Don did something that I felt was to "controlling".... but each time I step away I reflect, and see the other side of the coin.... sometimes it takes a week for me to come back, sometime a couple of months. But I always come back....

Because, this "family" of core members is an awesome group of people. If we all got along and saw things exactly the same, it would be a boring forum.

We all just need to remember there are human beings looking at our responses. As human beings we all have feelings and sometime they get hurt....

Yes I would agree that most would simply just exit stage left. But some people aren't like that. In being polite they say good bye. And there should be nothing wrong with that.....

Just like there should be nothing wrong with still coming on this site and reading threads... instead of coming on and being an active participant....

I was only comparing my town's forum to this one. First of all that site is anti-democratic. I mostly vote democratic but have voted republican in the past depending on the candidates. They basically call all democrats an idiot. There is also anti gay rhetoric regarding schools and how the gays are poisoning our school chidren. This seems to be a theme that is brought up every couple of months. My point is this is a good forum where you can voice your opinion, not so much the other site.

It really is a very good forum thanks to the hard work of our webmaster keeping it civil.People disagree and although I sometimes don't like the road they go down I certainly believe all opinions should be heard.

Agreed! The cornerstone of the American way. All should be free to engage in discussion with civility

....goodbye.....

Yikes..

I thought I was the only commie, pinko, lefty still here.. LOL Comrads. Unite!!

Seriously, I completely enjoy "discussing" politics with folks on the Right. However, I also respect the fact that Don doesn't want this forum to turn into FOX News vs. MSNBC.

I'm pretty well aware of who is on the Left and who is on the Right. I'm not going to change their minds here in an open forum, and I'm firm enough in my beliefs that they won't find me to be a likely recruit for the Tea Party.

Instead, I'm more interested in their views about Lake Winni, which will still warm up in the summer and freeze in the winter.. well maybe Global Warming will wreck that freezing part, (sorry couldn't resist), regardless of who is in control in Washington DC.

Everyone needs to relax.. have respect for EVERYONES freedom of speech without feeling their opinion is something you need to change. It's just a movie.. :) Chill out and enjoy the ride..

JMHO

Confirmed democratic socialist here, so you're not alone, SteveA. Usually choose not to get into the political BS.

Hi! I know there's a new member thread here somewhere, but can someone point me to the "I've been here and seen some things I like and some I didn't but recognize it's a public forum that will entail that sort of thing and, as such, have found much more good than bad and am deciding to stay" thread? I'd be ever-so-grateful for the support and recognition. Peace in, left-wing hippies and right-wing nutjobs--I'm keeping it real from the center aisle!

I had the pleasure of having a 30 minute conversation with the OPs. They are real nice people who never expected their good deeds to go awry as they have. I am glad they did their best to mark the rocks near their house.
