Weirs Beach Water Slide on the Auction Block

Another sign of these times::(

And the reason for the foreclosure auction is collateral damage created by the Financial Resource Mortgage (of Meredith) Ponzi, 80-100-million dollar meltdown. The landlord, a Laconia guy, who owns the property and rents it out to the Waterslide-big volcano business, lost his shirt to the FRM Ponzi and now cannot meet his mortgage payments, according to a LaDaSun article of 1-2 weeks ago.

According to the newspaper report, he really invested big-time with FRM and got caught hook, line & sinker........sorry to hear. Not a happy situation.

The question I always have when I see something like this. Is what will the future owner decided to do with the land. Will it be someone that will keep the water slide and miniature golf, or is another landmark coming down in the name of progress so that and investor can turn a buck....

Time will tell of course

Lakesrider 01-18-2010 02:22 PM

Couldn't sell the other water slide place for years. Has it sold yet? I haven't been there in a few weeks? Now another one is going to stain the landscape. Goes right along with the clear cutting of the trees next door. Well, Mother Nature will reclaim the property now. Maybe trees will start growing through the slides, or at least until another developer steps in an puts up another monstrosity up. Somebody call the Disney folks. Maybe we can get Tinker Bell and Mickey in here......:rolleye2:

With the location of this place I don't think it will just sit there.... it may not be a water slide any more, but that parcel of land is just to tasty and developable to sit there idle for too long

Lakesrider 01-18-2010 04:49 PM

Well if someone puts something there where will the Bike rally registration go. Or the flea markets that pop there every once in a while?:D

Construction up Back

When we were back for Christmas there looked to be construction going on in the parking lot in back of the slides. I was hoping they were doing some renovation to the slides. Does anyone know whats going on there?

As a relatively new store owner on the Weirs Pier it is starting to get pretty frightening. The first year we were in business we had the high gas prices that kept people away, then the big storm which washed out the train tracks and access from the docks. This past summer we had the rotten weather that kept people away. When the weather did turn nice at the end of the summer it was understandable that people people wanted to get as much time in on the water as possible leaving little time for shopping and strolling the boardwalk.
Being dependent on foot traffic, having another attraction that brought people down to the Weirs going shutting down hurts.

No idea what is going on in the back of the lot.

There is a big reconstruction project underway to repair the boardwalk. It looks like they are doing a very detailed repair which I believe is the way to go. Hopefully, this will attract more people from the beach to the pier.

Busby Construction is using the parking lot of the water slide as a staging area for the construction materials needed or removed from the Boardwalk rebuilding project...

Took the scenic route down through the Weirs waterfront on Lakeside Drive today on the way back from Lowe's, and Busby was working on the boardwalk at 4pm. Probably taking advantage of the warm weather, or something?

There's another Weirs business up for foreclosure auction. Think it is called the Weirs Motel on Lakeside Drive, about three blocks beyond the Mount Washington dock, and before you get to Akwa Soliel. It has a large 'for sale' sign out front but no auction sign. Saw a notice in one of the newspapers.

That waterslide-volcano location seems like it would be a good spot for Dunkin Donuts which has a store in the nearby mini mall, behind the Weirs Beach Post Office. Dunkin Donuts has big stores in Laconia, Meredith, Ashland and Plymouth but just a little store in Weirs Beach. That corner location could become a beautifull Super Dunkin Donuts........like wow! (sarcasm alert here!)

Unfortunately, I don't think that high gas prices and/or lousy weather are the whole story.

There seem to be a number of folks that are trying to make Winni less than welcoming to boaters (read: vacationers) and/or to restrict boater access. Take a look at the thread concerning Braun Bay, or the recent threads concerning Ames Farm; they're perfect examples.

Not that either of those situations would necessarily be a "show stopper" for somebody looking for a place to vacation; but, the way things are with the economy these days, it may not take all that much to tip the scales toward staying home.

Honestly, I've been surprised that local businessmen in the hospitality industry have been greeting things that may have a negative effect on their livelihoods with yawns rather than "tar-and-feathers".

HA! I'm with ya Silver Duck. Business in the Lakes region is the bread and butter of the local economy. With Businesses going under as they have lately, what exactly do people think is going to happen around here. There really needs to be a better organized group of owners getting more involved in town politics around here. The sit back and be happy days are over and have been for a while. Maybe we need to call up the Minute Men and make a stand at the Weirs Beach bridge.

Silver Duck

Has boater access been restricted at the Weirs?

Woodsy 01-19-2010 09:45 AM

mcDude...

I am pretty sure theyare on track to be finished before Ice Out.... and with the Spring Derby cancelled I doubt there would be any boat access issues at all...

Not sure about the snowmobile access as the RR tracks are a Corridor trail.... usually the city leaves the snow where the parking for the Mount would normally be.... Busby is using that for a worksite.

I assume the sleds have to run down the middle of Lakeside Ave for a few hundred feet..

Hi mcdude

I don't know of anything specifically at the Weirs; I was referring mainly to the shut down of Ames Farm as a public launch facility, and to the new attempt by the folks responsible for that to restrict public lauinch ramps within a certain distance of residences. I actually have neighbors that no longer bother with fishing tournaments on Winni because of the Ames Farm shutdown.

But, in a way, no rafting zones are also a restriction of public access to certain portions of the lake, and those things have ben proliferating over the last few years.

11-am auction today

Hey...check out that Bill Hemmel aerial photo of the Weirs Waterslide that's in today's www.citizen.com Anybody on this board down at the 11-am auction today?

What's the latest? Who bought it? Is it destined to be a Super Dunkin' Donuts? Will it become the area's 4th CVS or maybe just continue as what it is, the Weirs Beach Waterslide?

Will all the crummy, rotten, cold, damp & rainy weather for the last three straight summers, running a waterslide biz must be more than a little challenging.

Yosemite Sam 01-22-2010 10:43 AM

Here is a blow up of that photo:

....a photo is worth a thousand words.... Will Shakespeare 1598

Say - I betcha maybe it's within 200' of the shoreline which would put any construction under the purvue of the Shoreline Protection Act which, as I recall, restricts construction of impervious surfaces to 25%, or something like that.

Maybe the new owner can design a non-impervious parking lot somehow? Pave it with crushed seashells maybe?

Most likely, imho, the Waterslide will join the Big Banana as a blast from the past, and get replaced by a name-brand chain store like DD.

dpg 01-22-2010 11:40 AM

Heard it on a Mass station today and they said one of the interested parties is the current owners wife. That sounds weird.

Yosemite Sam 01-22-2010 11:57 AM

The buyer is a 30-year-old real estate investor from Bedford who said he has been summering in the Weirs Beach area since he was a child.

Actually FLL I am in the ready mix concrete business and there is a product we produce called pervious concrete which allows water to filter through the parking pavement into the ground for just these situations.

Let's hope so...then the State can keep its extortion tactics and grubby paws off of our LLC personal income that they so conveniently refer to as "INTEREST & DIVIDENDS, for the simply purpose of grabbing money to make up for their out of control spending.

Look South Governor Lynch, look south toward Mass. See what happened this week to the tax & spend democrats. You and your tax & spend cronies are next - just wait and see.
