Sailboat strapped to trailer
 

Found this about 10 days ago. Dove it with Senter Cove Guy.

I did not stop the scan to take other runs at it (requiring I re-set scan parameters among other adjustments) for better sonar images after putting a flag right on it because I was in the middle of a long scan and did not want to break the continuity of the scan pattern ("mowing the lawn") that badly. I will go for better images at a later date.

Clearly the boat, about 20 feet long, is still on the trailer. Bow numbers still there; Green reg sticker is dated 1999.

Pitch black at 46' feet; Water temp 48 degrees. Deep silt bottom.

Gives you some appreciation of conditions divers encountered when floating the plane that crashed recently in the Broads. Dark, cold, lousy visibility. No surprises there.

I have some theories as to how it ended up 1/4 mile offshore still tied down but likely will never know for sure of course.

I lost video resolution during editing and file compression but it's still a good view.

Very interesting. It would be even more interesting to find out how the boat ended up on the trailer in a watery grave, so far from shore...

I mean sure its interesting for divers, but at what point does this get classified as dumping trash in the lake? I mean could I dump an old boat and trailer today? How about an old car?

For the sake of curiosity:

Who owns the sail boat now that it's on the bottom?

Are there any regs affecting its salvage?

What would it take to float it?

I realize that it is economically unfeasible. I just enjoy the logistics.

Maybe the 12' aluminum boat could be raised as well?

I don't know the specifics of salvage law, but I doubt someone can "own" something at the bottom of the lake for that long (and admit to it :eek: )

Was this boat being trailered to/from an island on the soft ice ?

Guy Pike, you are making some of us suspicious that something illegal happened here. It isn't everyday that you find a modern boat and trailer on the bottom of the lake. One can only surmise that either the boat was stolen and dumped there right before ice out; or it was illegally scuttled and someone's cover has been blown. I'd like to know how the heck it was transported there on the trailer without it being seen somehow.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the owners of the boat can tracked down by the hull number or the serial number on the boat or trailer, so no to your "enough is enough" in my opinion. I would like an explanation of why it is there. If you can't handle the conversation, I suggest you stay out.

Well now I don't think a sailboat and trailer at the bottom of the lake needs to become a national news story. Or a snowmobile, or an automobile, etc. There are plenty of those out there. As to the boat being mine.....notice that I use my own name and don't hide behind some cute little pseudonym. If anyone wishes to speak to me personally, I'll be at Nolan's having a beer with my freind Bob!
