Searching for an old vacation spot (house)

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone in the Alton Bay area could tell me if they know of a certain house still exists. I was looking through old photos and came across the house. I think I've pinpointed it, but on the google maps I can't get in that close to see if its there. It was by the old roller skating rink. (I can still hear the music). If you were facing it on the water side, the house would be on the left. It had a screened in porch and it sat up a little on a hill. It was white with lattice (sp) on the bottom of the porch. I remember there being a dock, and I believe it could be the drive way next to that store that has changed hands, I guess quite frequently. (bakery/diner).

For some reason I am compelled to know if its still there as I am thinking of taking a trip up there soon. (haven't been since the 70's). If a picture helps, I can post one. I think it was one of the only houses in the spot I'm talking about.

any help would be appreciated.

thanks so much!
Denise from Mass, missing the good ole' days.

Welcome to the Forum.

The old skating rink (Pavilion) burned down more than 10 years ago and has been rebuilt as condos. Adjacent buildings did survive. Looking from the road to the right is an old small building that has a shop or two. Maybe that is it. To the right of that is the Olde Bay Diner.

I will be down to the Alton Bay PO tomorrow to pick up the mail and will take a photo.

Yikes I forgot to take a photo the other day, better late than never.

On the left is the side of rebuilt pavilion. On the right is the Olde Bay Diner. In the center is the old house that, if looking from the water, would be on the left of the old skating rink.

Thank you Slickcraft for doing that!!! So awesome. It looks so different. I am definitely going to have to drive down there before winter to check it out. I will bring old pics with me to see if I can get any history. I don't know why its important to go there, but I just feel the need to visit my history...lol

thanks again, I so appreciate the photo. I will update here when I make my travels that way.

thanks for taking the time!

Denise from Mass.

Okay. So I googled where your photo was taken and I don't think that's it. I think if you go to the right (going by pic) you come around that bend and I think its the driveway between the former Amilynes corner store (I read its not there anymore) and Lillan Marines building. I see a driveway. I think its right there. I remember there being boats. When you went down the driveway there was a white house. Unforunately when I try to google across to the other side I can't see whats there.

I believe there is a house where you are describing.

Going back time wise in Google Earth this view appears to show the "hidden" building,

Slickcraft!!!!! You are the best. I can't believe you took the time to do this! And guess what? That's the house (gray)!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am including pic of the house as it was in 1970 and I am actually in the photo, sitting on shelving in the screened porch (in yellow). I definitely have to take a ride down there to see it....Are there places to stay in the area, and also are there things to do around there in the fall?

I'm so excited that I was able to locate this, and because of your help all the guess work is done. I'm so happy it still exists, and except for the color the integrity of the house is still the same. Major flashback. I don't even know how I remember this house or why its important to go back. It just is.

Are you a life long resident to the area?

Thank you again, really. I greatly appreciate it!

jeepstah we have only been here for 20 years, likely there are others here that were here in the 70's. We get our mail at the Bay PO so as I am down there a few days a week snapping a photo was pretty easy.
