Stimulus paving on RT109
 

Paving is moving right along. They have made it from Wolfeboro to the Old Colony Club in Moultonboro today heading north. And they are putting down a thicker layer than I thought they would. It was like driving on glass almost all the way home tonight.....Ahhhhhh....my butt, thanks the tax payers! Very much...:laugh::D

In wolfeboro, they had one of those stimulus signs and someone put a sign over it thanking the "taxpayers" rather than the "stimulus". I loved it! But it was removed. Guess somebody didn't like it reminding people that taxpayers are really the ones paying for it!

Any idea how much the taxpayers had to spend on the sign that tells the same taxpayers where their money is going? Ridiculous!

No kidding and all these advertisements to tell people who are losing their homes that they don't have to lose their homes. Put the money toward things, not ads!

Our senior (and soon to be out going) senator Judd Gregg was a vocal critic of the signs. If I recall correctly from the channel 9 newsblurb, the cost per sign is something like $300.

It's great on the butt until the butt gets kicked when it is reprocess for lack of payment.:laugh:

Now that Main Street is finally nice & smooth, any bets on how many days until Town of Wolfeboro employees start digging holes & cutting through the fresh pavement? :laugh:

It is a beautiful thing, but I didn't enjoy it much when it took be almost an hour to get from near the HS through Wolfeboro a couple of weeks ago. Yikes. That was murder!

I was surprised to see a large excavator with tracked treads sitting on the new pavement in downtown Wolfeboro late last week. Right on the new pavement. Too bad they couldn't have used a vehicle with tires to do the digging.

The project is done now what?
 

Congrats to the people working on 109. Unfortunately, the stimulus money is going to be very short lived. It would have been better spent creating jobs that would last more than 4-8 weeks.

Our nice smooth roads will be broken up again by next spring because the proper base preparation was not done prior to the (skim) top coat. Enjoy it while it lasts.

We are going to have to live with pave and shim for a long time to come. I would like to see the state undertake a program where they do actually repair the roadbeds but that is likely a 40 year project. This is what happens when horse and cowpaths become roadways.

Route 11A (Cherry Valley Road) is being paved today. Started near int. w/ 11B and is headed east towards Alton. Passed my house (near Gunstock) 'round noon.

Just to bring this to the top again...a Warning.

To all you bikers out there, be very careful at the junction of 25 and 109. I was on my bike the other night right about 8pm. There is a bunch of loose gravel at the intersection there. I almost dropped the bike on some of it. No idea why they don't make a turning lane for that intersection. what happens is that everyone, especially big rigs, cut that corner and force the gravel up onto the pavement. Bad!
So just be careful.....

They're not doing the 109 paving correctly at all. Give it one winter, maybe two, and the rocks that cause the frost heaves will start wreaking havoc on the road. They should have dug 109 up, removed the rocks, and re-bedded the support for the road. If that's done then the road can last around a decade.

According to what I was told eight or so years ago by an official at NH DOT, the base of 109 has needed to be rebuilt for decades. He calaimed that the road was built on all kinds of fill and needed to be totally rebuilt. His unofficial comment was that there were not enough politicians living or using 109.

So, your comment about recurring problems with frost heaves, etc. are absolutely correct.

I live on RT109A and it is basically the same road bed as 109. The last time they repaved was in late summer. After the next frost heave was over, it was just as bad as before. They should have given the money they spent on 109 to us forum members. We probably could have found a better use for it!!
