Hurricane Irma
 

We have a place in Naples FL...........we are crossing our fingers.........

My FL boat is at the dealer for maintenance. The work is done and I have tickets to fly down there Monday to pick it up.

I considered going earlier this week to move the boat to it's home which is a lift that, at best, can get it about 5' above high tide. I did not do this so it remains on a rack about 10' above the water at the dealer.

A storm surge at my lift could remove my boat.

At the dealer water isn't the threat. Wind is.

Up high on the dealer rack my boat could be treated to all manner of insults.

Flying objects, canvas shredding and the toppling of the whole dealer rack come to mind.

If I go Monday, sea conditions will likely prevent me from fetching my boat. My next opportunity is Tuesday a week later. I have bought those tickets.

Whenever I arrive in FL it is my hope that there will be "Irma missed us" celebrations everywhere.

Fingers crossed and hopefully won't get to see if impact windows really can take a 150 mph hit :)

I called my next door neighbor in Florida and he said his wife and three kids had rented a cabin in Tennessee and left today to wait the storm out. He and the two dogs are staying.

Contractors are charging $400 to put the storm shutters up on the house and $300 to take them down. That makes it almost worth flying down!

There is a company advertising on Craigslist for 50 laborers and offering to pay cash at the end of each day of work. (Apparently the IRS doesn't need to be involved). I was told that 80% of the homes have their storm shutters up already.

It sound like this could be the big one!

I'm on the gulf coast in Cape Coral and it looks like we are going to get it equally.

I just got a text from my electric company that they...
After Hurricane Andrew (1992, occurred while I was in Wolfeboro), power wasn't restored for two weeks. (!)

Agreed, it is definitely worse than Andrew. (If that was possible).

But this afternoon, it's tracking West. :(

Intensity is stronger to the East of its projected course. (The black line—marked H and M, M, M, M, below)

If the line keeps moving to the West (left), the worst home- and boat-owner scenario also moves West! :eek2:

I try to take comfort in that the hurricane "never hits where its pointed right now". However, the projected 7-foot tidal surge will cost me—and all those without Florida windstorm insurance—much of what I possess, and the comfort of arrival at "home".

Worse yet, should the tidal surge become higher than 7-feet. :eek:

Ft. Lauderdale
 

Hello all,

My place in Ft. Lauderdale sits on the Intercoastal waterway one block west of the beach. (200 South Birch Road) The City has raised all the bridges and isn’t allowing access to the barrier island unless you’re a resident. Fortunately for me, my condo is on the 9th floor and suffered no damage. Sand from the beach has covered A1A and from the pictures, I’m being sent it basically looks like you’re living on a dirt road. I’m being told Florida Power & Light is promising Ft. Lauderdale and most of the east coast of south Florida electricity by the end of the weekend. I’ll be enjoying Meredith, my boat, and the beautiful lakes region this weekend but I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you my heart isn't breaking for Florida and all the families struggling with no electricity and damaged homes.

Thanks to all of you terrific folks for the kind words and best wishes for the people in Florida.

Hi choppers how haven you been? Glad to here you have no damage. I had relatively minimal damage to my place on Marco. Some roof tiles, lanai screens and trees but no water at all from tidal serge and I'm on a canal. Could have been so much worse.

About the same for my place on Marco. Boat on lift survived, but the cover got shredded. Minor cosmetic damage. Been monitoring the Marco Patriots channel on Zello app. Those people have been doing a great job offering assistance to others. Seems to be a lot of people in Everglades City and Chokoloskee that are in very tough shape.

Talk about a close call.....feeling very lucky today.
House in Cape Coral was right in the center of the storm but we made it through with no major damage.Three large trees down but no damage to the house or lanai.
Lots of leaves,palm fronds and debris on the lawn and power is out so we lost a little food in the freezer.
Thoughts and prayers to everyone in the Keys and the islands that were devastated by the storm.

I have a place on Marco Island beachfront, and still waiting to hear from mgt. company on damage. Xing fingers.... We won't be able to get down there until Oct.

My brother is a permanent resident of Naples,I've made several calls to his home,
but as of yesterday had no response. he's located just off I-75.
Will call him again today.

I just saw a report that Eagles Nest Condos (beachfront) survived mostly unscathed. Not sure if you're in that vicinity or not.

According to Lee County Electric Coop it could take weeks for the power to be restored to Marco Island. :eek::(

I'm located beachside near the Hilton hotel complex, have not heard from anyone down there on the extent of damages ?

I do know that South beach, especially at Cape Marco point got hit the hardest.

Gulfview i believe is up near the Residents beach, and may have escaped the worst, however it is a wide-open stretch there.....I believe Gulfview condos' are near the Crescent Beach condos', very expensive real estate !!!!

i can't imagine being in the South Seas Towers, on the upper floors.
My friend had a condo on the 20th floor, and on a really nice day, the wind would almost still knock you over !

Praying all in FLA get their power back soon.

No damage at Naples Condo. Plenty of tree damage though and no electricity.
My Amelia Island home also sustained no damage and we have electricity. Again mostly trees down and some surge damage. We evacuated to Raleigh and returned home Tuesday night. The ride down I95 was once in a lifetime experience
15 hours bumper to bumper mostly stopped traffic and numerous accidents.

The photo below is of a friend's house. It had a new galvanized roof which is now resting on the 1st floor of a 2-story house. :confused:

Your are correct APS and it seems media coverage is focused on Naples and Marco and less on The Keys and the USVI which were both devastated

Thanks. Although I am on Marco Island which took a direct hit I was very lucky with minimal damage to some trees, roof and lanai but wasn’t even enough to claim as is was under my deductible.

Wikipedia says Key West consists of 5.60 square miles of land, with a high elevation of 18-feet .... and the highest alcoholic beverage consumption/person of any town in the whole country .... so's probably Key West just got drunk and wandered off, somewhere, into the ocean ...... helloooooo ...... Key West ...... where are you?

White is lights in more developed areas. Black is the earth’s surface. The difference between the two shows power outages. The Keys are not under water, just in the dark.
