Broad-winged Hawk

We had a lot of nice birds in our yard this weekend and I was busy photographing some of them today; when all of a sudden a Broad-winged hawk did a flyover and they all scattered for a good long while. It was very exciting to see the BWH, as I have never seen one before.

So lovely! We've had broad-winged hawks near our house (in Alton)- they're fun to watch! Your photos are always stunning. :)

Broad-winged Hawk

I had one fly over me while I was driving on Rte 3 near Mosquito bridge last week. Certainly not something you see every day.

Your photo's are always incredible. Thanks for sharing them with us.

The Broad-winged Hawk has different color patterns, but yours is the one I'm most familiar with—around the lake.

It's heard more often than seen. It has a thin, but loud and whistled "scream": Pe-heeeeeeeee?, with a rising inflection.

The Broad-winged Hawk is heard directly upon opening this YouTube video:

I didn't see what kind of hawk did it but I found a neat little pile of dove feathers near our (empty) feeder.
The feeders are empty because of F&G's warnings about bears although many birds still stand by, hoping for someone to re-fill them thus making them easy targets for the raptors...
I always enjoy seeing hawks in the yard! Thanks for the pictures!
