Glen gables
My other guess would be perhaps the location of the former William Tell, and now the Lodge at Smith Point? But this seems closer to the water...

I’m sure one of our resident historians like McDude will chime in with the location and hopefully more photos

William Tell
Sure looks a lot like the William Tell to me there used to be a motel to the right of the main building. The view now is blocked by some pine trees.

It sure looks like the Greystone Inn to me :-) More info here

I think McDude is correct. This is from the other thread.
Attachment 14411 Question: when was this area called Greystone NH? Sent from my iPhone using Winnipesaukee Forum mobile app |
Greystone was a whistlestop on the Lakeshore Railroad. (see other thread) When the railroad was abandoned there was probably little reason to have a specific designation for this area.

Not sure if I put the link in properly but this site shows it where the William Tell is. Look at number 85 |
Glen Gables location
The Glen Gables was still there in the late 1950's when we first vacationed at Sandy Point. It is indeed the location of the former William Tell Restaurant, now The Lodge at Smith Point.

I can't get photopost to work (?) but here is a photo (shared by Rusty in another thread) of the "William Tell"
https://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums...1&d=1519956042 and a copy of the ad posted above for comparison purposes. https://i.imgur.com/kOWirIR.jpg and a current pic of the Greystone Inn posted by Oche http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...-19-44_910.jpg |
Greystone Inn
I don't know when the Greystone In was orignally built, but I do know that it was there in the forties and fifties. We always passed it on our way to Lake Shore Park.
The William Tell was up the hill from the Wise Owl at the curve in the road on route 11, not near the lake. Was it originally further up the road towards Alton Bay before that? The Glen Gables was close to the water near Sandy Point. |
Wow, so many blast from the past comments, I didn't think there was anyone still alive that remembered these things. :)
