Winnipesaukee Stereoscopic Photos, anyone?
Hi All,
I have a small collection of antique stereographs, and some I've made myself. Only have one original of the lake, but thought I'd share. This one's a view from Center Harbor. I am hoping others have some. If not, enjoy this one. :) Our antique stereoscope is a little homely but works wonderfully. And people say these new-fangled 3-D TV's are all the rage.... This 3-D stuff's been around for a while! This one is an old Kilburn -- the Kilburn factory is by a historic marker in Littleton, NH. I scanned this pretty high resolution, it should print fine and fit in your stereoscope. On this one the weeds really jump out in the foreground. :) If anyone has others to share, I'd love to see them. Pontoonbarge http://www.pontoonbarge.com/forumpic...ilburn_789.png PS: make your own. Get an out-dated digital camera. Use ebay to find a second one that's the same. Should be cheap. My 3MP cam's work awesome. Get a tripod and a piece of stiff metal or plastic. Drill two holes so that you can mount both cameras so the lenses are about 6-8" apart. +/-... Take some pics and line them up in the stereoscope and say WOW! It's surprisingly easy. |

This is probably from the 1800s. Photographed and published by Kilburn Brothers, - Littleton, NH. "a standard size yellow mount stereoview of four young men canoeing on Lake Winnipeseogee (older spelling for Lake Winnipesaukee ???) while several victorian clad ladies wait on a dock in the background. Perhaps you can find this location yet today. A bit of fading, but otherwise a great view. Probably dates to 1870s. Kilburn Brothers stamp on the verso, Littleton, NH." http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopo...ogeehouse2.jpg Winnipiseogee House - 1877 Alton Bay. An old stereoview photograph - August 30, 1877. Note the RR bridge and tracks in the lower right. This edifice (at least the front part) burned on May 10, 1905. http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopo...ampmeeting.jpg Men at Weirs Campmeeting - from an old stereoview photograph. Stereograph Views of NH
NYPL Digital Gallery has quite a lot of views of the White Mountains, by John P Soule. A couple of my White Mountain favorites are:

Here are some from the lake! http://images.nypl.org/index.php?id=g90f468_108f&t=w Wolfeborough (1858?-1875?) http://images.nypl.org/index.php?id=g90f468_110f&t=w Centre Harbor (1858?-1875?) http://images.nypl.org/index.php?id=g90f468_111f&t=w Centre Harbor and Red Hill (1858?-1875?) http://images.nypl.org/index.php?id=g90f468_154f&t=w Senter House and Stages, Centre Harbor, N.H. Pavilion Hotel
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...n_Brothers.png
I kept coming across images of The Pavilion Hotel in Wolfeboro, but it isn't ringing a bell for me. Was this hotel in Wolfeboro? |
Yes, it was. I think it was the first one built and was on what is today the Brewster Campus.

Amazing
Hey these are really great -- going to get some of them into my stereoscope. Many thanks!
