Metal grinding after new start installation

Installed a new starter on a 94 Marc thunderbolt V8 now all I hear is metal grinding and boat is not starting. The boat has not been in the water this season either. So it's coming strait from the boat shop winterization and storage to. Did the teeth need to be matched before trying to start?
The starter is tight too.

Sounds like the wrong starter, or a shim is missing. I wouldn't try it again until you get it fixed, I'd hate to go from needing a new starter to needing a new flywheel.

The new starter needs to be shimmed. IF the ring gear is wrecked, you can put a new one on your old flywheel. They only cost around 40 bucks.
