Ice 1/15 ?

I am guessing by the paucity of ice reports there is no good news, but hoping for an update anyway... Feel free to include local guesses on when ice is safe for general use. Especially from the west alton area to Rattlesnake please!

The broads are all still open water. Bays have ice on them, at least Alton did. Some brave souls out there ice fishing. Dunno wonder if this year will be another year where the lake doesn't freeze over completely? Hard to say, but won't hurt my feelings to bad since I have a new boat in the garage and I'm itching to take it out.

Still hundreds of acres of open water along the west side of Governor's Island. Spent the afternoon teeing golf balls at the end of the mcmansion breakwater and smacking them towards Bear Island, skipping across the ice on the other side, hoping to break one of those gypsy camp windows.....hah! :coolsm:

Is this mcmansion fever, or what? I wanna go to Miami South Beach....waaaa!

Please tell me I'm not the only one that had to Google paucity.

I didn't bother too, but now I have to!

There was a brave soul(s) out in the middle of Weirs Bay Sunday for several hours. The ice in the middle of the bay looks solid enough, but I'm still not sure I can get out that far yet. Hopefully this weekend....

Sorry, Lakershaker, but . . .

the Broads are still wide open. Even worse is the fact that the wind is blowing and it won't be long until the open water reaches the Barndoors. I can see the waves eating away at the fragile ice from my window. Over on the Sleepers side, the ice is still holding but I wouldn't go out there. I have heard that Minge Cove is still open mid-way out but haven't walked down to see. Who knows what the next storm will bring. Next week looks very cold and we should be able to grow some ice then, if we don't have wind.

Thanks for the updates

Wish it was better news, though... oh well...

One cold calm night

Temperatures at Black Cat fell to 4 degrees this morning with calm conditions. The lake ice made its usual growth sounds with an occasional loud boom.

Sunrise found a layer of fog which hung around as clouds from tomorrow's snowstorm moved in. Most of the fog was centered over The Broads, probably because of the open water there.

In this photo the fog bank appears behind Six Mile Island on the left and Steamboat Island on the right. A layer of arctic sea smoke can be seen rising from the open water in the distance.

Broads Update

Any ice action going on out in the broads, as far as the cams can see it seems to be skimmed over.

Any updates?? Now I'm getting itchy

Thanks

FLL --- need an Ice Update

How's it looking at Cattle Landing and on toward Mark Island. Any snowmos passing through that area yet? Hoping to be up this weekend. Tks!

fatlazyless 01-21-2008 09:37 AM

On Saturday at about 2pm, there was a group of six snowmos, spaced well apart, that came from The Weirs, rounded buoy 3, and headed for Center Harbor. First and only snowmos, I've seen. Didn't see any on Sunday. Everything I can see, Gil-Gov-Tim-Mink-Mark-Bear is all frozen hard. Everything, except the little space between Horse Island and the mainland. That is open water.

Have not been out on the ice to drill any ice fishing holes....no idea how thick.....need to scrounge up the $35 fishing license money somehow? Instead, maybe I'll just go ice fishing after dark with that $25 battery operated, automatic, ice fisher-jigger....what a brite idea!:coolsm:

Thanks Les

Just east of Cattle Landing is always the worry spot for me -- between the ice eaters around the docks on Meredith Neck that chew up a large arc of ice in that area and the general tendency for that pinch point in the lake to shift around until the ice gets real thick, I'm always cautious on foot through there until until the ice is more than a foot thick. A couple of years ago when we had that warm winter, I was crossing directly North from the public docks and then portaging across part of Bear and over Dolly Island to avoid that whole area. Feels like a more typical year this year. Can't wait to get out to the camp and fish....

Hey at least your fishing license is only $35. We non-voting taxpayers have to pay a whopping $53 as non-residents for the same priviledge.
