land telephone line-high price?
Just got off the phone, my cell-fone, with a Consolidated Communications person and was told that a land line with unlimited long distance costs $37.99/month plus the taxes are about $28.00/month for a total of $65.99/month for a residential land line.
So I said thanks but no-thanks, and that seems like a VERY HIGH price, $66/month for a land-line ...... omg ...... these land lines used to cost like $11.99/month for the same service ...... such a high price with the unbelievably high taxes. ..... I say ....... bring back the ten cent pay phone in a telephone booth. ..... |

Land line? What's that?
LOL |
Why just last night, Wednesday night, I swear that was Marilyn Monroe inside the pay phone both, making a call, in the entrance area at Lago's Ristorante. I shouted out loud, close to the pay phone closed door ........ H-e-l-l-o .... M-a-r-i-l-y-n ..... and she winked back at me.
So, bring back those pay phone booths with Marilyn Monroe inside, and on the phone ...... h-e-y ...... b-a-b-y! |
Hey FLL: Do you have a rotary dial cell phone?

This whole thread casts doubt on FLL's credibility as the guy who finds the best/cheapest deals.

Hey Descant, can you take a look at http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federa...one_excise_tax and inform us why this telephone tax adds up to $28.00/month? And yes I do have a very nice, old yellow table top phone stamped in ink with an "11-68", November 1968 on the bottom metal base that has a rotary dial and a large four prong plug. Stamped or engraved into the metal base, underneath, it says; "Bell System Property, Not For Sale." It also has a metal dial, underneath, that must adjust the level of the ring-ring-ring. Definitely, my type of a phone! .... :D ..... So simple, even a Neanderthal caveman can use it ........ arrghh! |

Before the back-up generator, the one in the kitchen has an answering machine and would not work with the power out. I would swap them out and see if the line was active with the rotary dial. |
I got an Ooma (VOIP) years ago in both NH and MA.
$0.00/mo Probably 10 years now. Rock solid and ported our former landline numbers to them. You pay for just the phone which was like $100 or something at the time. They still offer them today but you have to pay just the taxes/fees. Like $5/mo I’m grandfathered in so pay nothing. If you want a land line it’s the way to go. What’s cool is, you can take it with you. Only needs Internet. Even at say $30/mo, two lines for 10 years. We saved $7200.00 in phone bills. Unlimited calling anywhere in the USA. |

I have an Ooma phone with a 603 number. The taxes are the only charge and run about $5 per month so it is pretty cheap.
I take the Ooma box to Florida during the winter. I used it more often at the previous Florida house because the cell coverage was lousy. I take great joy in calling my New Hampshire friends during a snow storm and telling them how nice the Florida weather is. Now the only other time I use it is when I can't find my cell phone and I call the cell phone number to get it to ring. The joy of being old! |

I use Ooma. I kept the landline first because I have had the number for so long and it still gets listed in the phonebook (remember those?!). Second, with multiple people in the household, not all of whom have cell phones, it's convenient to have a single number someone can call to reach anyone. Also, there are a number of people who all I prefer reach me (or leave a message) at home.

I also went with OOMA.
Advantages are you can keep old number. Give out this number instead of cell to businesses you don’t want to call cell or if you are worried they will put you on a call list. Also allows you to black list callers by name or number so you phone does not ring. I was on one list that called every night. Added the organization to list and never heard from them again Sent from my iPhone using Winnipesaukee Forum mobile app |
I might have to switch over Altlantic Broadband's customer service is not good at all.
Last week, I lost phone and internet... cable was fine. Today, when I receive a call... I can hear them and they can hear me. When I use the redial function, same, I can hear them and they can hear me. When I dial out the ten digits directly, I can hear them but they cannot hear me. Trying to use the ABB internet chat places you ''on wait'' and no one ever seems to respond. I can't call them because they would not be able to hear me. Technology, such a disaster. |

https://www.semicron.com/fgd400.html I also occasionally have to send or receive a Fax. There are other ways to accomplish those things today. So I still have both running, since I have them and they are free and still work perfectly. The cottage sitter has come in handy a couple times over the years. I've had the Cottage Sitter (earlier model) since 1986 on a real analog land line and then switched to OOMA when I learned about it. Oh that's how I did a remote Thermostat decades ago. We also like having a common "junk" phone line. Any time anything asks for a phone number we give it the land line, unless we feel it's critical for immediate contact. That way we get less spam calls on cell phones. |

Landline has its advantage
Some medical equipment requires a landline to work properly.
911 works very well over a landline, as location service over voip or cellular is limited. Those that are on probation, by law require daily check-in over landline only. In an emergency, the old dial-up can be the only way to go! |
