My Mom & "The lake"

Posted 11-21-2008 at 09:28 AM by SLI

My mom has spent her entire life summering @ our family's home on Smith Point. This past summer was difficult as she has some form of arthritis which is making it difficult to get around. She can no longer climb stairs to the second floor where the bedrooms are...so a stair lift was installed. She is unable to get around the property.... so she got an electric power chair that enables her to get around. She and Dad have settled into a winter rental that's all one level, warm and cozy even in...

A Different Way to Travel

Posted 06-09-2009 at 11:40 AM by upthesaukee
Updated 06-09-2009 at 03:44 PM by upthesaukee

Back in the early years of travel to the lake, as has been well documented by McDude in his historical postings, rail travel was a prominent mode of transportation. Here is a perspective on that mode of travel.

During the winter, we were talking with our friends, who moved from Laconia to Georgia, about going down to visit them. We talked about driving down vs. flying down and then my wife got the idea that perhaps we should look into taking a train down. She had never been on a train,...

A Magic Carpet Ride , And The Rugg's

Updated 02-14-2010 at 03:00 AM by trfour (Additions to text)

My Mom and Dad were thinking about moving to California from the east coast back in 19and 51. This adventure would have to be thought out well in advance because at the time we were a family of 9 children. First of all, as we all know today, how can we make this gigantic move, and secondly, do we have anymore families of this size today?.... Food for thought. If you are thinking that maybe times were better back in the day, try it!!

Second of all, logistics, feeding the family while...

Photo Entries Of Our Family Album

Posted 07-06-2009 at 04:01 PM by trfour
Updated 08-07-2010 at 03:25 AM by trfour (Add Link)

Family album from Life, 1953
My Sister and I are in the process of taking the album apart to scan all of the photos so as to give copies to all of our family members.

Loading the luggage trailer, and heading west, only to return to Lake Winnipesaukee, several years later.
Love,
T

PS. Part of the story of our journey west was published in a Dec. 28th 1953 issue of Life Magazine.

Our Military Heroes!

Posted 03-05-2010 at 11:00 AM by Rattlesnake Gal

There are many Forum members with loved ones in the military. Since this topic is non lake related, I am starting this blog dedicated to our nation's heroes.

It would be great if you could post here and share your stories and experiences with your Forum family.

Since becoming friends with WinnDixie and learning about her grandson, it has really personalized our troops for me.
I have a renewed mission to do a little something to support our troops. Thanks...

House Hunters Lakes Region

Posted 04-29-2010 at 07:54 PM by Roy Sanborn

All right, I admit it, I am a little obsessed with real estate. Like the other full time agents that are making a go of it in this difficult market you almost have to be. You have to take this job very seriously or you won’t survive. It also helps to be a little crazy. You have to work long days, be available whenever and wherever at the drop of a hat for your clients or customers, and deal with new...

Lake Winnipesaukee and Winnisquam Waterfront Sales Report - 3rd Quarter

Posted 10-14-2010 at 02:06 PM by Roy Sanborn

We are three quarters of the way through 2010 already. Where did the summer go? There were eight waterfront sales (including island property) on Winnipesaukee in September 2010 at an average price of $941,938. That compares to ten sales last September with an average of just $735,390. For the first nine months of 2010 there were 67 sales at an average price of $1.155 million and an average time on market of 252 days. That is up from a total of 57 sales for the same period last year at an average...

Haunted Houses

Posted 10-30-2010 at 09:10 AM by Roy Sanborn

The snarling dog that had chased my car for half a block stopped dead in his tracks when I turned into the driveway. This house seems like all the others I have seen lately. There are no lights on and it’s hard to see through the windows, the grass hasn’t been mowed for months, paint is peeling on the porch, and there is no sign of life; at least the kind we like to talk about. Going up the steps...

Lakes Region Real Estate Sales Report - October 2010

Posted 11-19-2010 at 06:51 PM by Roy Sanborn

There were 68 residential home sales for the month of October in the communities in this Lakes Region market report. That is down a bit from the 73 posted last October. The average sales price was up significantly from the $271,339 last October to the $395,012 last month. This increase in the average sales price is due to a large waterfront sale rather than any surge in overall home pricing. On a rolling twelve month basis ending 10/31/10 there have been 791 homes sold at an average of $319,297...

A medical tale

Posted 11-25-2010 at 10:58 AM by PapaDon (Papa Don's Place)

As some of you know, besides my PTSD, anxiety, and depression, I also have some fun knee, hip, back, and spinal conditions. These bother me in random ways, so I can't always guess which knee, arm, or hand is going to work properly. So sometimes I walk OK, sometimes I stagger like I'm drunk, and sometimes I just plain fall down. I bet it would make some fun videos to watch!

Also, with 5 fingers out of 10 with no feeling, some loss of strength, and not the best guidance systems...

Mr. Fix It's Christmas List

Posted 12-03-2010 at 12:51 PM by Roy Sanborn

As of December 1 there were 1074 residential homes available in the Lakes Region towns covered in this report. The current total is down about 100 units from last month, but up 30 units from last December 1 and represents a 16.5 month inventory supply. The average asking price stood at $548,593 and the median price was $279,900. Just about 30% of the current inventory is under the $200,000, 30% over $400,000, and 60% in the mid-price ranges.

It’s the holiday shopping season so I thought...

How Much Snow Is Too Much??

Posted 02-06-2011 at 04:02 PM by Roy Sanborn

This was a really great week, if you like snow. Driving into Laconia on the day of the most recent of one too many snowstorms was like sledding into an Eskimo Village above the arctic circle. The main differences were that I didn’t see any polar bears lurking nearby, our igloos have flat or peaked roofs rather than round, and plow trucks were the only thing moving instead of sled dog teams....

The Garage Mahalic

Posted 03-31-2011 at 05:08 PM by Roy Sanborn

Spring is coming. Nascar has fired up its engines, the sweet smell of racing fuel and burning rubber is in the air, and as the frost heaves recede gear heads begin to think about getting their prized street rod or motorcycle on the road. It’s a time when many men dream about a Garage Mahal.

The fact is, put simply, men like (1) garages and (2) basements. You can’t generally...
