Funny to think about it, as we're a group of locals and seasonal folks, but other than NH, where do you go on vacation? Do you stay in New England? Or are you lucky enough to be able to go 'round the world on an adventure?
Just curious.... :)

Last year Hawaii. (Got married there) But we have gone to Mexico several times, Puerto Rico, Greece, Ireland, Sedona, AZ, Yellowstone, Germany, Skiing in Park City Utah, during the Sundance Film Festival.
Lots of different places. We also like to take long weekend trips as well. Stay at the MT Washington, Eagle Mountain House in Jackson, Washington DC, to see the museums, Boston, etc....Oh and every Summer we take a long weekend to Lake George with my car club. Next ear we are planning to go to Austria, and our time share in Kissimee, FL.

We just got back from southern Utah, Northern AZ and southwest CO. Hit a few national parks in the following order: Arches, Canyonlands, Natural Bridges, Capital Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Canyon and Mesa Verde.
The previous two trips were Alaska. As for local stuff, Acadia Nation Park is nice in October.

For the past two years we have gone to Turks & Caicos and really loved it! Before that we have gone to South Africa, Bahamas, Arizona, Florida Keys...

Now our vacation destination seems mainly back to the Lakes Region, and a short trip to Florida in the winter...to visit NH friends who are wintering there. The longest one we ever did was to Kwajalein in the 90's to visit our kids, stationed there. But that was then;this is now...and the Lakes Region is definitely a gorgeous place to live in, or visit!

Try Italy in September. We went with Gate1Travel on an escorted tour and loved it! Started in Venice (no one should ever be allowed to die without seeing Venice), then Florence and Piza, Rome, Capri and a stop at Pompeii. Wonderful, wonderful time and informed and friendly tour guides.
Greece with AHI Travel was a great time too. It was not the usual trip as we landed in Athens and had a day or two there before we were off to Poros where we settled in and took bus tours and ferrys from that spot around the Agean? One could attend an hour class in the morning and there were wonderful dinners together and some activities planned like one night when we all could get in groups and have a small interaction in Greek! So we learned a few words and phrases. Then back to Athens. For these types of trips the escorted tours seem to work out best. NO WORRIES ON ANY THING AT ALL!
With Kids DisneyWorld is special and not a terrible drive. Washington, DC is also a nice family trip with all the museums and the zoo and monuments etc. Also Busch Gardens and Williamsburg are great for school vacations. Driving and piling into one room can save a lot of money. There are inexpensive motels all along the roads and many near to Disney too. We tend not to make reservations in advance and just pull off the road when we are ready.

Our secret spot.....Vieques.....a small island off the coast of Purto Rico. About the size of Aruba, the island only has two small towns and miles and miles of deserted beaches. There are no chain operations of any kind with the exception of one hotel. You must rent a car from private companies and eat at local restaurants. You'll need to speak a little Spanish to get by.
It is like being in Cuba in the 40's. People still ride paso fino horses in town and senorita's still walk with escorts in the town plaza.
You can rent a small ocean front villa for the price of a hotel room.
Local restaurants get deliveries of fresh local fish, veggies and fruits as you eat. If you don't like crowds and don't mind roughing it a little.....this is the place for you.

Deleted post because it wasn't about the Lakes Region.
Edited to add:
Since some of us live in tourist areas, like Alton, Wolfeboro, etc., and we're always trading info on restaurants, attractions, etc., here on the forum, I thought it might be interesting to find out where some of us actually go to be the 'tourist'... sorta a "shoe on the other foot" type of thing. Apparently someone(s) thinks it's not appropriate for this forum...
Webmater - if you feel you need to delete this thread please do so. Sorry Don...

Why is it OK to say where people who live in the lakes region like to eat or get medical care or shop but not where some of us like to vacation?

I don't think AW said that it wasn't OK. I think she is giving Don the OK to make that judgement.:)

I was in Costa Rica a couple of weeks ago, that was fun.
Did the whole Southwest US: Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Zion, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Park trip a couple of years ago, that was awesome. We hit Sedona, Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon and a few other places too. Great time and a really cheap vacation.
Did a romantic long weekend in Paris with my wife a few years ago, and a couple of romantic long weekends in Rio as well. Those are always fun. I've done a couple of trips to the Carribean and loved them both. Planning to charter a 37 foot catamaran for a week in the BVIs in July 2011.
As a family, we love roller coasters and make a trip or two per year to Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ. They have two of the world's finest roller coasters and it's only about a 6 hour drive from NH. I highly recommend a two day trip there.
I also recommend a trip to DC. It's a very interesting place to see and a really cheap vacation because all the museums and zoo are free.
San Diego is a great place to visit. Great weather, friendly people, lots to do. Vastly superior to LA...
London is blast, but renting a car and driving out through the English countryside, especially places like the Cotswolds and pretty much all Cornwall County is hard to beat.
Last Summer, we did a "staycation" with good friends and their kids at our house in NH. We let the kids choose activities that pleased them and did not force them to do anything if they did not want to. The adults just did what they wanted to as well. I have to say, it was one of the best vacations I've ever had. Instead of trying to find something 8 people enjoyed, we just split into little groups and did our own things. I ended up biking, hiking and canoeing extensively, in my own neighborhood with one or two other people who enjoy it as much as I do, and had a blast. It was wonderfully stress-free.

We chartered a 50' Cat with Captain and crew in the BVI with 3 others couples in '06 and '08. Best vacations we ever had. Can't wait to do it again. Just got back from Belize in March. Also visited the French and Italian Rivieras, Tuscany, San Diego, Sedona, Hawaii, Vegas, Riviera Maya, Park City Utah and Vail over past few years. Thinking of Turks & Caicos next year. One thing that's helped recently is to pay college tuition with a Jet Blue AmEx card. Between that and points from business travel we rarely pay for flights.

We've enjoyed several cruises to places like Grand Cayman, Honduras, St. Thomas, St. Martin and Cozumel. But our favorite cruise by far was the last one: to Bermuda, out of Boston on Norwegian Cruise Lines. No flying needed, stayed in St. Georges the whole time, disembarking and embarking the ship whenever we wanted, exploring the island with travel cards on public transportation. We brought our own snorkel and fins from home and walked to an amazing beach every day. Other than that, my go to place for vacation, R & R, healing and renewal is the Lakes Region of N. H., home base is Meredith, the Inns at Mill Falls, all four of them. I'll be up in a couple of weeks.....yay !!!!
