High Point Road by any chance? Alton Mountain is actually known as Pine Mountain. Check photopost for pics by dcr. Morse Farm dominates the top of the Mt. One of the Morse kids just donated lots of land up on the Mt. to be preserved by the NH Preservation of Forests. There is also a state and town forest. Nice area. If you continue up and over the mountain you'll be at Hills Pond and Sunset Lake.

Some good friends of mine live up that way and they have trouble getting cell phone calls at home. Of course, cell service is something that can change for the better in time.

There's some neat history up that way and it was considered the 'wild' side of town back in the day (read: late 1800's). If memory serves me, the annual town meeting was held during "mud season" in Alton with hopes that the folks on Alton Mt Rd wouldn't be able to make it. I guess they were the trouble makers in town. (Some were also my family - I have some DNA underground in a family cemetery on that road...) :D

Hmm - interesting comment on the cell service. At home on the mountain I get better signal strength than back where I stay for work (the land of infinit taxes). But I do have an open exposure on the hill facing north/north east.

Top OK. Up and over not so good

Thanks for all the input folks! :) Much appreciated.

The realtor did say that the winters could be tough on the mountain road and I anticipate that the winters could be kind of cold up there too.

I assume that the road is plowed regulary during the winter? Both the wife and I have 4 wheel drive...well me anyway and she will have it if we move up there.

I was surprised that there was cable run up there too. Not a lot of houses to suppport the cable runs but the cable folks might have anticipated more development than has taken place.

Again thanks...:D

We have cable and high speed internet at Hills and Sunset. Some of us even have indoor plumbing!

I'm so happy for you! :D:laugh::devil:

Now, can you help me find a doctor up there in the lakes region wilderness that doesn't use leeches? :look:;)

Just a little insight as to roads in the winter. I have been traveling the roads since 1957 and never once have I used 4WD. For the past several years the mountain is one of the firsts roads plowed as the school bus has to go up to Beaver Dam Road (SunsetLake) and the whole lenght of Avery Hill Road. They heavily sand the roads also. I have more of a problem getting out of my driveway than I have ever on the roads. Time and patients make the traveling real easy.:)

If your retirement happens on the mountain, maybe we can do some tripping together.http://i43.tinypic.com/53pooj.gif

Yes the road is plowed but I don't think it is high on the list. Regardless depending on the wind direction you get blow over on the road in some spots. If you have 4 wheel drive you will be fine - remember you are judged by how you fair in the winter around here - so if you have trouble don't admit it. To be honest I think winter up north is easier to deal with then back down in tax land. In NH people know how to plow and drive in the snow - unlike the aforementioned place.

There is cable up the hill but I don't know if it is run onto High Point Drive yet or how far it goes over the hill into the Hills Pond/Sunset Lake areas.

The plows go up Rand Hill Road from Rte 11 at Busy Corner, and turn left on Alton Mt. Road. I live further west on Rand Hill, and can drive in 4-6 inches of snow until I get to Alton Mt Rd. Road is well sanded and is part of one of the major school bus routes. Higher priority road for plowing. Icy
weather, sanded well. Sometimes I'm jealous. :emb:
