Water Temp

For my diving friends/buddies, FYI - I was in West Alton and Alton Bay, Saturday and again Sunday. Water temp at 30 feet is 46 degrees.

I was diving last Friday in Wolfe city and it was 50 degrees there. I was comfortable for the most part, just my hands got cold. Last year I got a new pair of Kevlar gloves which hold up well when working on moorings. My old titanium gloves were much warmer, but lacked the protection need when digging in the bottom.

It's 104* in my hot tub, I guess that counts too.

Those who are familiar with cold water diving in the lake, could you tell me if the the visibility is higher at this time of the year?

I had less than five feet of visibility last Friday... A lot of things affect visibility such as inflow into the lake, (like where I was diving, near the Smith river) water temperature, algae bloom, boat traffic, climatic conditions (low atmospheric pressure), currants, thermo-clines and depth.

On the best days it’s about 30' and on the worst just a foot or so. On some days it better under the thermo-cline, others it’s above. I've seen it go from 30' to five feet in just a matter minutes as a weather front moves in.

Visibility generally gets better in the 60 degrees range and above 40' depth.

And of course, it really sucks when you’re working on moorings and you disturbed the silt, then its total silt out or 0 visibilities - pitch black...

... is in the middle of winter when the water is frozen over. All of those factors that Winni Diver talked about are out of the equation. If there is a layer of ice with no snow, it is quite nice, as far a visiblity goes.

The water has been warm for the better part of the summer and the thermocline is anywhere from 34 - 40 feet deep. It's been a very comfortable diving summer.

Does anyone know why the temp posting on the Water Temp page has stopped?

I know we have other sources for this. But as with many other great things on this site, having the temps there serves as a wonderful history of the water temps over the years.

I dove late Wednesday afternoon -- short and shallow -- and you could feel the difference from two weeks earlier. The cooler temps and big rains from early in the week definitely brought the temp down a few notches. Late-season lake snot was in full bloom, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Viz was actually pretty good -- especially considering the warmer/earlier average water temps this summer. Love the September water temps, and looking forward to some mid-September dives.

We do weekly water quality sampling at a site between Governors and Timber Islands as part of the Lakes Lay Monitoring Program. This week the water temp was an almost constant 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees F) down to a depth of 10 meters (32.8 feet). This temp was down about 2 degrees from last week, prior to the rain.

The thermocline had been running at a depth of 8 to 9 meters (26 to 29 feet) for the prior month.

We also look at water transparency by lowering a black & white disk (Secchi Disk) to see how far down it is visible from the surface, this week it was visible down to 10.2 meters (33.5 feet). Last week prior to the rain the disk was visible down to 10.8 meters.
