Ice Conditions

Does anyone have Ice conditions for around Rattlesnake ? How about any other parts of the Lake? Lets try to get some updates posted on a regular basis if possible. I'm planning a day trip this weekend to check things out and will post my findings. Thanks

Are you going to try to get to the good side of the island? Things were solid at the landing and looked good and clear all the way out, we had no way to drill in to see how thick it was as we went, so we stood there and wished we are on the island.

If you are going, let me know, I may be up for a day trip.

I am going to attempt to go to Welch from the Glendale Town docks this saturday by snowmobile or Polaris ranger checking ice as I go.
I'll report back.

Was any ice made this week at all or was the weather too warm...??

Going out from the landing isn't the problem, it's when you make "the turn" that things can change fast. Just really trying to get a read on conditions for the Derby, I wish it was colder right now.

It looked like we were making good progress, but with the temps where they are, all bets are off. And now the snow pack, who knows.

I was out fishing off Glendale this past Sunday, there was about 7-8 inches of good solid black ice, in between Locke and Marine Patrol. The divers were also out there diving on the wreck. I saw plenty of sleds and 4-wheelers going out by Welch Island, west side ( side facing the airport). Hope this helps !!. Also if the pilot of the low wing aircraft that did a barrel roll over us, reads this, EXCELLENT FLYING ABILITIES YOU HAVE MY FRIEND !!!. Would love to take a ride with you anyday . My brother in law just spoke to a few local people that said the ice was not safe out to Rattlesnake and that it varies from 1 - 8 inches and should not be trusted.

With the predicted temps and rain, i'm not sure any of us Rattlesnakers will be out there anytime soon.

If anyone has a different (and better) opinion, please share. :(

The different bays, Alton, Wolfeboro, Meredith, 19 Mile, etc. are all pretty thick. Heading out onto the broads is a tough call. If you have a fast snowmobile and know the lake, go for it. (I will not be held responsible if you go through the ice!) Other than that, I'd wait a little longer.

When Russell says it is ok, then I will head out to the island. Until then we will keep the sleds in the bays such as Alton Bay... and watch the planes land!!

260SS, going to Welch during the derby should be no problem, enough of the sleds and wheelers that came by us , came from that area. They were parked in glendale parking lot. Even one of those golf cart looking 4 wheelers came by with 4 guys in it. There are even bob houses out by Welch and Round.
I'm not saying there is 2 ft of ice, but you should be able to get to welch without any problems. If I were you, I would try it this week, and drill a hole every 100 yards or so just for a piece if mind !!
COMMON SENSE should dictate what you can do, and whats not safe. When in doubt----------drill a hole !!!

Thanks for the update Topwater, if this rain doesn't ruin us we may have a shot to get out to rattlesnake but I'm not taking any big risks. I like IG's style, get the word from those in the know.

I'm seeing reports of slush under the snow in some spots now, I was hoping to get up this weekend with the auger and drill some holes but some commitments at home will hold me back it looks like.

No commitments are big enough to keep anyone away from the lake:)

Truck partially through the ice on Alton Bay near Echo Point on the south side over 35' of water and atleast 150 yards from shore. Looks like truck has been temporarily stabilize at the moment, heard it went through around 7:30 last night.$$$$
Be careful and be aware of the conditions, there is probably a spring in that area as it is mostly 10-12" arounmd there.

Sage advice.

Remember -- around rocks and shoals, in inlets, around structure and through channels, it's always thinner. Sometimes deceptively so. Regardless, little of what we say here will deter those who are intent on venturing out on the ice. There have already been some sleds dunked & recovered in Wentworth and Winnipesaukee. Now comes truck season.
