The Alton Historical Society has a new WEBSITE (http://www.altonhistoricalsociety.org) and has recently re-printed a book called "Alton - A Town to Remember". This book was originally published in 1987 by the Alton Old Photograph Committee. It's a gem! Here's some more info from their website

Book Available for Purchase

The Society has copies of the book "Alton, A Town to Remember" available for purchase. This book is a pictorial remembrance of Alton as it was in the latter 1800's to 1945. The book is softcover, measures 7 inches by 10 inches, 96 pages and contains approx. 150 photos. Some of the sections included are Main Street, Community Buildings, The Working People, Alton Bay, The Campground and The Trains.

Cost per book is $12.00.
Shipping cost is $2.50, for up to 4 books.

The book is also available at at the Town Hall or at the Gilman Library

The Society has also worked closely with the Downtown Revitalization Committee who have been responsible for creating Railroad Park and moving the Loon Cove Station to that location earlier this year.

The Adventist Campground used to hold "revival style" prayer meetings that drew a big crowd...most of whom arrived by train.

Off topic, but I wish mcdude lived in Centre Harbor. You are a lucky dog Alton.:)

McDude. Dr. Tuttle was in Wolfeboro too. Did he do both towns?

Tis: I have no idea. I never heard of Dr. Tuttle! I was actually going for the photo of Morrell's store. Before they recently closed, the building housed a propane office (?) staffed by a fabulous woman named Bunny from whom I purchased my little slice of paradise up at the lake.

McDude, you have such great photos of Alton!! I live in Alton and it's great to see all the old photos. Alton's still pretty rural, so the old photos are easy to recognize. I especially like the picture of the cutter in front of Amilynne's store.

I remember Dr. Tuttle, he delivered my sister at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro. I have vague memories of him visiting at our house. I was only 3 or 4 at the time. People in Alton always remembered him fondly.

He delivered me and my older brother too, Apples. I can barely remember him giving me my vaccination and saying the bee was going to sting or something like that. I must have been 4 or 5. After that , I remember nothing about him. He was pretty old then, I think.

As you are facing the old video store....Isn't it the building over to the right? There's a lawn area in between them with angle parking in the front.

Tis, he retired in 1945. We moved to Alton in April of that year, my Dad took over his practice and thought very highly of him. I've heard many great stories about him over the years, he was a true country doctor!

Apples---- Then it is not the same doctor, because I wasn't even born in 1945. But there was a Dr. Tuttle in Wolfeboro. I wish someone knew more about him.
