The Alton Historical Society has a new WEBSITE (http://www.altonhistoricalsociety.org) and has recently re-printed a book called "Alton - A Town to Remember". This book was originally published in 1987 by the Alton Old Photograph Committee. It's a gem! Here's some more info from their website
"Alton, A Town to Remember"
Book Available for Purchase
The Society has copies of the book "Alton, A Town to Remember" available for purchase. This book is a pictorial remembrance of Alton as it was in the latter 1800's to 1945. The book is softcover, measures 7 inches by 10 inches, 96 pages and contains approx. 150 photos. Some of the sections included are Main Street, Community Buildings, The Working People, Alton Bay, The Campground and The Trains.
Cost per book is $12.00.
Shipping cost is $2.50, for up to 4 books.

The book is also available at at the Town Hall or at the Gilman Library
The Society has also worked closely with the Downtown Revitalization Committee who have been responsible for creating Railroad Park and moving the Loon Cove Station to that location earlier this year.

The Adventist Campground used to hold "revival style" prayer meetings that drew a big crowd...most of whom arrived by train.
