In the true spirit of Christmas. Christmas had become too commercial.

Don't you think it is up to the individual and their special circumstances?
I will probably start a little earlier this year as Thanksgiving will be cut short.
so... I look forward to celebrating a little longer with family than usual, which means earlier for us.
I will celebrate with lights real soon.... perhaps before Thanksgiving, as I want to celebrate now while we can..
It will not be to commericalize, but to truly enjoy my family & friends whenever I can see them. This year I plan to enjoy the Holidays early & long.. as I am so grateful they are here to enjoy & have near, I am so blessed to have them.... I hope this to all ..........

I drove around last year, and not many folk had lights up in the Suissevale area.
I just put mine up on the house while it was nice and warm out...for November anyway. I just want to turn them on but don't want people to think I am nuts. Though this is entirely possible.....;)

We have our lights on from the day after Thanksgiving until Epiphany Sunday.

The decorations typically go on about 2 weeks beforehand and stay up for about a week or so after.
BUT....when do they come down?
My neighbors across the street still have Halloween "cra#%p" out front of their house. But than again, they still have a shovel from last year, a beach umbrella, a bag of Grub-x, a gas tank (from a truck) and lots of other stuff! My own opinion.....put the Halloween stuff AWAY.

Does anyone decorate the "Lake Side" of the house? Maybe the folks on the other side of the cove or bay could appreciate.

Does anyone know if Meredith will illuminate all of the lights they've had in previous years, especially in the dock area? Last year, Meredith was partially lit!
My wife was so disappointed.

Usually right after Thanksgiving. The kids are really into and I love it when they're both trying to "help" - plus it keeps them busy for a while. (And the cats are busy with the tree!)

Speaking of Xmas lights, does anyone know if they will be doing the Holiday Light Park at the Branch Brook Campground in Campton this season? (Have not seen anything advertised.)
We like to bring the kids up to see the lights and it's a nice activity this time of year. Especially while waiting for Gunstock to open up.

Last night we went for a drive down Bean Rd. into Sandwich for the first time. I love the big Christmas tree made from reflectors! I joked to the kids that it's going to be part of the tradition of driving around the lake to gaze at the lights. Talk about energy efficient!
I love to drive once around Governor's island the week of Christmas to see their light displays. I'd love to see the lights from the water some time too.

This tradition springs from pioneer days when husbands or sons would go off to war. A lighted candle in the window was to guide them home. It would also alert their neighbors that a loved one was absent and the household thoughts were focused on a safe return.
This tradition can be traced further back to the hospitality of ancient Ireland. A candle in the window meant that weary travelers were welcome to share the family’s hearth and home for the evening.
And later, during the era of Penal law when practicing the Catholic faith was illegal (and hence dangerous), daring families placed a candle in the window as a message to traveling priests that this was a home where they could safely conduct the traditional Catholic mass—particularly on Christmas Eve.
I think white candles in the window all year is a great tradition. :D
Steve A, you are wonderfully funny!

At the lake, we use only battery operated, LED window candles. They go up on Thanksgiving weekend and stay lit through New Year's. They look warm and inviting...very important when you have no central heat. Our camp is only visible from the lake. The only people who see these are our guests and some very hardy boaters.
At home in our sedate surburban neighborhood, we have white window candles and each foundation shrub is covered with different color lights than the one next to it. To top it all off, closer to the sidewalk, we place 2 - 6 ft. tall lighted palm trees and a flock of pink flamingoes that light up and move. We live on a fairly busy street and often have people stop to have their pictures taken in front of the palm trees. My lights at home go on Dec. 1 and are unplugged after New Years.
I love Christmas lights!

Rattlesnake Gal,
Thanks for the history lesson. There is a house in our neighborhood that has white candles in their windows year round. I thought there was a reason (other than insanity) for this display and you filled in the blanks for me:D

A lighted candle in the window was to guide them home.We have done this four times already, everytime my son-in-law went went off to war ..starting on Dec 27, 2002 ... We will again place the candle in the front window early in January 2010 as he heads to Afganistan, but this time we will place a second candle .. this second one for our only son, who heads to Afganistan a few weeks later.

Wow! Thank you, Winni Retired, for a dose of reality for me! We have a grandson who is four months into his first deployment to Afghanistan, with the 5th Stryker Brigade. I spend some scary moments, but I can see where I need to "woman up"! You've been on a lot longer journey! God bless you, your loved ones, mine and all of them!

Forgot to mention anything about Christmas lights. Ours, must admit, are getting smaller (as we get older!) and go up closer to Christmas--usually a lighted wreath. Now some people here go over the top. There's a street near us that does an all-out thing like Edwards St. in Laconia does. One year one of the homes rented real reindeer as a finishing touch. They got loose and ran all over the area for a few hours...just for added excitement!!

"Good news is that I truly out did myself this year with my Christmas decorations. The bad news is that I had to take him down after 2 days. I had more people come screaming up to my house than ever. Great stories. But two things made me take it down.
First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by.
Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn't realize it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn't take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard."
My Mom sent this to me this morning. I checked it out with Snopes and found no reference to it being a fake.
Too funny!
Merry Christmas to all!

From Weirs Blvd, Laconia. I never needed to decorate the camp at Christmas, as it was high up on a hill and you would have needed a helicopter to view... I did put some lights in the windows.
However, my neighbors across the street always had some of the most beautiful Christmas decorations and lights that you could ever want to see. I think Chuck 'owned NH Electric!
Some Awesome people, by the way! Talk about sharing!
Merry Christmas,
