Currently, we have property/casualty insurance for our island property with The Concord Group. I recently received a letter from them saying they may not renew or continue the insurance because the property "does not meet underwriting requirements" (whatever that means!).

When I took out the policy (we recently bought the property - this year), the guy said there may be trouble because the property is "on an island, and since Katrina  the companies are not wanting to underwrite island properties". What Katrina has to do with New Hampshire is beyond me.

Has anyone else run into this? Anyone know of some sane insurance companies that understand the difference between oceanfront in a hurricane zone and Winnipesaukee?

Frustrated!

Thanks and Regards,

Steve

Insurance is getting so frustrating. If it isn't island property, it's an empty house, or they don't write that type of house any more or they want central alarm systems or some darn excuse. If it's a boat, they don't cover that type of boat any more. If it's health they don't cover that prescription any more. It it's business insurance, you want to pay for the little things yourself or risk the price going up. It makes you want to just forget about having any!

Here's a thread we did a couple of years ago when Webbsatwinni was in the same predicament:

We use Hanover Insurance through Portsmouth Atlantic Insurance in you guessed it, Portsmouth.

Best rates I have found and good service.

We use allstate for all of our insurance - primary house in CT, island house on Rattlesnake, cars, boat, umbrella. Generally I've been happy, but I just got my renewal notice for the island and it went up 80%!!!! I called to ask, and they said the same thing about how they are pricing island property. I told him it was on an island last year too, but it just seems like most insurance companies are really trying to limit their catastrophic exposure.

I am not going to change carriers even with the price increase because I'm afraid I wouldn't find someone else willing to write a policy for the island.

Try Cross Insurance in Meredith, the carry Phenix out of Concord NH. Iv'e driven by the Phenix office in Concord so they are a local carrier, no increase for us this year.

I also insure my island property with Phenix out of Concord. Rates have been reasonable and steady for several years. Your mileage may vary.
