Today was opening day at the new headquarters for the National Forest Service - White Mountains in Campton, NH. It is located in its' own forested campus setting about one mile off Route 93-Exit 27 and apparently is so new that the public directional signs indicating where it's at are not yet in place, but I found it! Driving down Route 93 and looking through the trees, it can be seen, if you know where to look, just south of the large Pemigewassett River bridge crossing on Route 93-south.

I was expecting to see a small Forest Service log cabin, maybe two stories high with a front porch and some green shutters with pine tree cut-outs. And, a garage building out back for their Forest Service green pick-up trucks. Not quite that way....what's been built looks like millons and millions of construction dollars. All those three-dollar, steel tube, parking day passes where you slide a three-dollar envelope thru the slot for when you go hike your favorite trail must be adding up to a whole lot of money....as the new facility is very impressive.

The main building is very large and looks like what one would expect for a 2009, northern National Forest Service building as designed and built with the resources of the United States of America. It is large.......very, very large; modern.....very, very modern; ecological........very, very ecologically designed; and expensive looking...... very, very expensive looking; and built to last for at least 200 years......honest!

It combines all the Forest Service employees, services, and vehicles that formerly were stationed in Bethlehem, Holderness, and Laconia.

Other than spending 24-dollars/year for a hiking-parking sticker, there's got to be some good, intelligent reasons for why to go visit the new home of your White Mountain National Forest?

After fifty years of calling Laconia its' home, the National Forest Service has said Goodbye to Laconia, and Hello to the woods of Campton, Rt 93-Exit 27.

Just follow the signs :D!
