Returning next week to our home on the ocean in Florida but we're really going to miss you, Winni. Thank you for a terrific summer, duck itch and all! We'll be thinking of you via this forum. Already looking forward to next season.

Have a safe trip back to the flat lands. I have heard it's realy hot and humid there. It was great to meet you both and thanks for all the help with my summer "project".

Hope to meet up with you next year.

I'm going to make FL this year and am flying down on the 27th. I will miss the lake but not the snow.
How many others go south in the winter?
Hunters please do not shoot the snow birds.

I'm 48 and would move "down there" tomorrow and so would my wife. To many ties here (right now.) Youngest finishing high school this year, work, etc, etc.
Although my company does have many employees in Florida maybe some day I'll be able to make it a job-related switch. Till then I'll just put on the heavy coat for this crappy winter weather.

We're going down permanently next month. I've spent my 50+ years in New England with 10 of them in the Lakes Region. But time for a change. Real estate deals in SO FL were too good to pass up. Got a great deal on a bank owned in east Boca (on a small "lake").

Work wise, I travel 3 - 4 days a week, so I"ll now have 3 airports to pick from instead of one.

Hopefully, we'll be up next summer for a vacation. It will be strange being a tourist :eek:

I'll sure miss Winni, but have the forum and cams to keep up with things.

I moved and lived in Florida a whopping 3 months and then realized I wanted nothing to do with that climate and topograghy except for a vacation or 2.Being a skier,I love snow.Being a hiker,I love the mountains.Not to mention the beautifull mountain streams and waterfalls that don't exist there.Summer is just nasty to me with the unbearable humidity.I do like to visit and will continue to do so but no thanks as far as living there.Mom and dad live in Venice for 3 winter months but can't me to spend time there. More room for you guys.Enjoy.:D

Some day when I retire the ultimite to me would be 2-3 months down in Fla and the rest of the time in/around Moultbonborough where I now go. I never skied and have no plans of starting at 48. Oh to dream...:D

Truth be told, we are not Florida-type people either and love New England's lakes, mountains, and charm. However, over the past five years we have come to also love our barrier island on the East Coast of Florida. Not one single store for 12 miles, just magnificent beach and lots of wildlife (bobcats, sea turtles, large and beautiful birds.) Great sunrises and great sunsets. Shorts and tank tops every day, tennis, golf, friends, the pool, the beach -- what's not to love?! Plus, just a few hours away are the Keys and awesome snorkeling. Yes, we will miss you, dear Winni, but when spring has sprung, we'll rejoice in our return!

Lake Winnipesaukee, NH and Gulf of Mexico, FL. "When I'm not near the one I love, I love the one I'm near." Both are great.

Closed up the island house Sunday - all very sad - wife, dog and me. Already back in sunny Pennsylvania! 193 days until we open, but who's counting.

Sure did on our way done there - got off the island just in time - started to sleet before we got to Concord - kept up some sort of frozen precipitation thru Hartford.

Yeah, it's hard to close up. Summer isn't really over until the water's drained from the system, the docks are out of the water and everything's buttoned up.

How many days until May? :)

Oh well! It will give me time to work on the Rattlesnake Island Web Site (http://www.rattlesnakeisland.net) among other projects!.

True, it does look much more like an alligator! However, all evidence available points to the presence of rattlesnakes on the island as the inspiration for the name and not necessarily the shape :) At least there are no snakes there NOW, and that's a good thing considering the number of folks that hike to the top of "Rattlesnake Mountain" (I do every day I'm there) - and often do the whole island, end to end. Sure wouldn't want to encounter a rattler under those circumstances :rolleye2:

Went up to the cottage wednesday night and proceeded to close. But how come every year when we close the weather is wonderful. Yup it was crisp, but nice. Friday morning we took the last boat ride went from echo point to the opening of the weirs, around gov. Island and back and basically the only way we got to over waves was to go around in circles.:laugh:
the lake was beautiful. Today it is damp cold here in SE CT Be on the lake it is crisp but here damp cold. don 't make sense to me.

Lucky1 I agree with you.

I am on the east coast. I love FL but feel more alone down here. Still the weather is great. Not sure I like a condo as I miss having a yard. Have a good friend in Wolfboro.

I arrived in Naples Fla. last Sunday from my lake home in Meredith. I already miss the mountains' the lake and the unpredictable weather. I lived in New England all my life but it is nice to enjoy this winter climate. It seemed like whenever the weather gets below zero everything wants to stop working and trying to fix things is miserable. I am not complaining as we are lucky enough to enjoy both.

I am also in Naples. I miss the mountains and the loons and the clean fresh air at the lake. I lived in New England all of my life and do feel more alone here as my close friends are up north. Happy to be alive and am a Lucky1.

What makes you ask? Naples is about 30 minutes from Fort Myers where the airport is. There are several people from the lake that I know come here too. Easy trip from Logan.

It did, and I woke to a thick coat of ice on my windshield in South Carolina. (I can't believe I formerly made this 1600-mile migration non-stop—for decades!)

SIKSUKR, Florida is a huge state, which can take 12 hours to drive its length. It has dozens of unique environments: If you want hills, immense oaks and bone-chilling cold, live in Pensacola. If you want bugs and heat, live in Central Florida. If you want ocean breezes to temper the heat, live on the coastline near the Gulfstream. (Which is where I head later this morning).

You can waterski year 'round. (And, unless there's a better word for it, year-round you can Jet-Ski! ;) )

I'm presently receiving a direct prevailing breeze off a Central Florida lake, and pay just $500 in property taxes to have a beach here! (I bought here when The Miami Herald's headlines read, "Florida housing glut by 1990!") It's more about planning than anything, as my total real estate worth—three waterfronts—was bought for less than $250K (less mortgage costs...in 1980's dollars).

Y'know, Miami Beach is a barrier island! :eek: But you may be discussing the Jensen Beach/Canaveral area, which is 90 miles east from my lakeside location where I am for the next hour or so.

WRT to "bank-owned" properties: To buy my oceanfront, I sold my "spare" lakefront two years ago for $270K. The new owner put in 100K—today the bank is asking $180K! :eek2:

Permanently to Florida?

That's interesting, because when I get old and too frail to maintain my three places, my plan is to move to a retirement community in NH's Lakes Region!

With regard to Florida "deals", did you know that Florida is losing population? :confused:

Well, after a really, really wonderful summer on Winni we are finally back in Florida. Even here on the ocean, the temp. was 91 today and the dewpoint was 77, Waaaayyyy too hot. Those snowflakes we saw last week up in Meredith seem a lot nicer than the AC that is now running!

To early for me to head to Port St Lucie for a shot of warmth and sunshine. With warm temps for this time of year going out on the lake for some fall boating.

APS, I bought my house at less than 50% of what it sold for in late 2006 and it appraised (based on recent comps) at 25% above the purchase price. There are deals to be had.

Highest point is a whopping 345 ft.Not exactly comparable to our White Mts.The only skiing I want to do in winter is on snow.Can't do that in Fla.But I will be visiting in February to hang in Key West.

SikSuker, Come out with me. The Breck' has the highest lift served peak in North America. 12,400 feet. The base is at 9,000 feet ASL.

I spent 9 months in Boca and it was hell. I love to ski, boat, hike etc. It was so friggin' out in the summer, it was like going from a ac house to an ac car to ac work to ac car and back to the ac house. I can't enjoy the outdoors at all. East Coast living is not for me. Either folks are too fast or too slow. Health care is not as good as the care I get up here.

I have the best of both worlds. The Lakes Region is within an hour of the ocean and the mountains. Geat spot for all around recreation. I grew up in Laconia. Came back after 33 years in the Nashua area. My second home is in Breckenridge. It is a great mountain. Plenty of snow and great terrain.

Don't get me wrong, I love the mountains in NE. Jay Peak and Sugarloaf are the best. Because of the extreme climate, I was able to learn to ski boiler plate as well as spring corn. Something the Western 'cowboys' are unable to muster.

To each his/her own.
