What the heck :coolsm: last year, in my copious free time :rolleye1: I started a web site dedicated to Rattlesnake Island. Well, I haven't made a whole lot of progress since then, but the site is up.

My intention as time goes on, is to include information relevant to Island residents and visitors, as well as some information about the Lake in general (or pointers to this information).

Perhaps notices of association meetings, services available on the island, cams, historical information, etc. just to name some.

Comments and information, etc. are welcome !!!! :)

DaveR started an interesting thread a while back - Why is it called Rattlesnake Island? (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2173) Smith Point says that he actually saw a Rattlesnake when he was 15! (Post 16)

If you visit the Libby Museum (http://www.wolfeboronh.us/Libby%20Museum/index.htm) in Wolfeboro, you can see the skin of a rattlesnake from our island.

Rattlesnake Gal - thanks a lot for the info! It's hard to believe that the lots sold for $100.00 back then - considering what they are selling for today, on a regular basis.

I have a couple of old lot maps of the island, and I believe I can make a new one with current information including current lot lines, etc. I don't know if this would be of interest to anyone (except for me), but when I get it done, I'll let everyone know.

Should be an interesting project, in any event :)

I just recently purchased the Rattlesnake Island maps from the town. Am I legally able to post them? I have Barndoor Island somewhere too.

Is this a GIS map in hard copy? Technically, it is all public information. In fact, I was going to use GIS to generate the lot map which is maybe what you did.

Some towns, such as Gilford have their GIS on-line, so you can generate maps at will. With others, you have to go to the town hall to get a map. My plan was to see if the town would, rather than print a hard copy of the map, generate one or more bitmaps (this can typically be done in GIS), which I could then put together to form a single map.

I don't think the lots sold for that. He originally LEASED the lots for 99 years. I think that is a list of the lease options.

The leases were for a period of one year. They ended in the late sixties when the lots went up for sale. People who were already leasing the lots had first priority as well as a discount. My family started leasing in 1961 and bought around 1968 for $5000. Not a bad deal!!!

Right, the leases were for one year, but somehow I am pretty sure there was a 99 year clause in there? That is what my Dad said and he and my Mom were friends of the Melansons. I mean who would build a house on a lot on which they were only assured a one year lease?

Most of the buildings during that time were temporary at best. Ours consisted of a tent platform with a framework for walls. Each year we would hang canvas on the frame. It was a simple life, with no electricity and phone, a far cry from today. I will check some old paperwork and look for the long term clause. I don't think it was an option during our lease back in 1961. It easily could have been a previous option.

My uncle and his family had a tent platform during those years on the end facing Diamond. They ended up building on Cow but have lots of great memories of the years on Rattlesnake.

I have 30+ very unique photos and newspaper articles which feature Rattlesnake Island... These documents were collected by Dorothy and John Rogers (lot 69) over many years... Cool stuff. Hopefully you have a scanner? It would also be nice if (as you scan this stuff for the website) that you might be able able to provide a CD/DVD for Dotty and John Rogers who so dilligently collected this history over the past 30+ years. I am at lot 68 (right next to dotty/John) and I am there most every weekend... so stop by anytime.
