Gunstock Inn History

Aside from a few restaurant blurbs (http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7835) on the forum (and a link (http://www.gunstock.com/lodging/) to "lodging"), I'm not too knowledgeable about the Gunstock Inn. :confused:

Yesterday, however, my Dad told me that the Gunstock Inn building once housed the pre-war "CCC". :cool: The C.C.C. was a Federal Government "make-work" project from the Great Depression era, named the Civilian Conservation Corps. That building was later bought by the late Chet Fernald of Melvin Village, and named "The Barracks"—which it was locally known as, anyway!

(Those who knew both unrelated persons would say that my Dad and Chet Fernald were "lookalikes"). :look:

The Gunstock Inn is mentioned in The Gunstock Parish, A History of Gilford, New Hampshire by Adair D. Mulligan. This fantastic book is put out by the Thompson-Ames Historical Society. (http://www.gilfordhistoricalsociety.org/tahs/buildings.htm) It is very well written and has much interesting early history of the lake. Not just Gilford history.

My Uncle use to be one of the testors for the factory back in the 50's. I remember in the late 60's testing out one the the fibreglas/metal/wood combination skis. 'Fibortal' skis or something like that. It was the first ski from Northland that had continous edges that was not screwed on. It was a very soft ski and very unforgiven.
In the 50's and 60's the factory would have 'seconds' and sold them at Piche's. All my skis up until the time the factory shut down were Northland. At one time, Northland was either a distributor or they made skis for a german manufacturer 'Armsteiner'.
When Northland was sold to Larson Industry, the boat builder, they killed the R&D. :(
I remember one of the designers, Jorgensen, he was from a Scandinavian country.

I recently received a brochure from Roche Realty Group (http://www.rocherealty.com/), which had an ad for the Gunstock Inn (http://www.gunstockinn.com/).
When I type in the MLS# on their site, it doesn't work.
The Arlberg Inn (http://www.rocherealty.com/searchResults.php?url=http://nh.agentave.com/v12/index.php?action=results&cid=1076&newsearch=1&mlsno=2669137) MLS# does.

Has anyone been to the Mountain Side Mountainside Restaurant & Lounge at the Gunstock Inn since Michael has taken over last fall?

The Arlberg Inn has extensive water damage in the back due to a bad roof. there is a blue tarp used to prevent more damage. Also the town of Gilford requires the new owners to hookup to town sewer which is currently at the old Alpine Ridge junction. Big bucks.

I read a bit more about the original wood building that housed the CCC—and human nature. :)

The CCC crews that worked over Winter on the mountain were to have continuously maintained fire in the "Baraks" fireplace. The firewood supply was ample.

Maintaining the fire went fine until after "turning-in", when no one would leave their warm bunk to keep the fire going. :emb:

Now I'm confused. Is the Gunstock Inn (that I saw last summer) the same place as the Arlberg Inn? (Though I enjoyed my first visit to the Arlberg Inn, somehow I missed going back for decades). :o

It appears "The Baraks" had served its very basic housing function and, being much more photogenic and functional, the Arlberg Inn replaced it 80 years ago.

Today, everything seems to point to the fact that there will be no return of any Baraks in the future. :D

APS: Two different places about 1/2 mile apart on Cherry Valley Road. The Baraks is now the Gunstock Inn. The Arlberg Inn is "abandoned" and sits across the street from the main entrance to Gunstock Ski area.
