This is an old one. Does anyone remember Karls' steak house? It was right in front after you crossed over the Weir's channel bridge? Was wondering since I knew the family .

It's amazing to me that this extremely desirable site has not been developed.

That was when they really knew how to make signs.

The daughter-in-law of the owners/family was named Linda Volmerding and was a jr.high math teacher at Inter Lakes back in the mid 70's. She and her husband lived off of Morningside Dr in Laconia. German food was their specialty.

I remember going there during bikeweek- always packed. Then again, back then everything down at the Weirs was packed. The Weirs is no longer the epicenter of LBW, it is more spread out.

Low and behold someone has a picture of the resturant I mentioned. The reason I tried to look into this is I knew the friends of the family that owned the place. They were from N .Y. and I wondered if the Borchert's were still around. (friends of the owners) If anyone can shed some light on the history of the place I would greatly love it.

I found this Karl's sign on Roadside Peek's website (http://www.roadsidepeek.com/rpeekeast/eatseast/neoneatseast/index4.htm). Nice!

I don't recall... was that demolished or was there a fire?

I may be confusing it with Meredith Station, which was a great place where the Lovering Volvo dealership is now located in Meredith. That one DID burn down.

If the state ever has the money......and don't hold your breath........ it may want to purchase that Karl's lot and reconsruct that malfunction junction into a roundabout.

Hopefully, the state will offer psychological counselling to all us locals who come down with malfunction junction withdrawal syndrome,......eek...... just like they did with the Old Man of the Mountain withdrawal syndrome.......eek?

Just looking at that old Karl's sign.......what a sign....too bad.....such a nice sign! What ever happened to the sign? Could be the building burnt down but maybe the fire did not reach the sign as I recall the sign was located at the edge of the parking lot, out front?

There was a fire a few years ago, then they demolished the building.

Karl’s Steak House was built and operated by Karl Stierle. He and his wife, Margaret, came to the Lakes Region from New York around 1951, when they purchased the old Shore Diner from Gerard "Jerry" LaPointe. (The Shore Diner was located on Union Avenue where the BK building is today) He was originally from Germany. Stierle sold the Shore Diner to Albert and Agnes LaCroix around 1957 and then built the restaurant at the Weirs.

no one has mentioned the Borchert's yet. These were people who knew the family ( German descent also) who vacationed at Spindle Point. They owned a property at the bottom of Sachem Cove Rd.Spindle Point , Meredith.I really don't care to know about the family that owend Karl's, but I would love to know what happened to the Borchert's. The son of the Borchert's worked at Karl's one summer. He was my friend and the friend of many others who lived at Spindle Point. Back then Karl's Steak House was an iron klad restaurant. The Borchert family (also from N,Y.) and friends of the family supported the restaurant , I would love to hear from anyone who can shed some light.

For the record, Karl's burnt down on October 21, 2005.

In 2006, Cumberland Farms had an option on the property, but their plan to build a convenience store there was turned down by the City of Laconia planning board because they felt that it would cause traffic havoc, with there being enough problems already at the Malfunction Junction without adding a whole lot more. Cumberland Farms later built their store further up Route 3 at the top of Tower Hill.

Regarding Malfunction Junction, the latest word is that the State of NH plans to build a roundabout there. A meeting was held at the Weirs Beach community center on August 13, 2009 to discuss the State's plan. Here (http://www.citizen.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090814/GJNEWS02/708149868/0/CITIZEN) is a link to a Laconia Citizen article with coverage of the meeting.
