Peter the one on the boat house is not the actual barber pole we speak of. There has been one in the water near the markers for quite some time. The one on the boathouse was put on by the owners of that house. As a matter of fact I believe that there are others in the area that have them on their decks/docks etc.

"Barber's Pole" is the narrow passageway located between Tuftonboro Neck and Cow Island: On your chart, look for Flasher-17. :look:

If a bridge ever gets built to develop 522-acre Cow Island, it would go in there...

http://boards.buffalobills.com/images/smilies/askeered.gifThanks for letting me know where the Barber's Pole is. I go by that area all the time, but I didn't realize that it was called the Barber's Pole. In most areas on the lake I don't have to look at the chart. If I looked at the chart I would have learned the name.

I hope that the Barber's Pole buoy is not replaced. Folks are confused as they navigate the area. I'm sure they are wondering if it's a navigation buoy (it's not). People who have places on the mainland side have put up some nice barber's poles. That should be enough.

Is there a navigational aid described on the map that looks like the barbers pole?

No, but it still looks like a spar buoy.

The original barber pole was always on the mainland. Was there ever a barber shop there?
It was not unusual to find Idylewild councilors making the swim to the mainland at this point to escape the camp for their day off or an evening in town! Let's hope no one ever tries to put a bridge there - that would forever ruin the island experience for those that choose to summer there - and one or two that live there full time.
